Hi again, Sandy,
The three marriages you describe for James Daniel are for three different James Daniels.
Various generations of their lines all collide with each other in many of their counties
so they were frequently mixed or melded in old family layouts.
1. James and Elizabeth (LNU): she's often given as a Woodson, but there is no
documentation of her surname. This is from the Roger Daniel line.
2. James md. Jane Hicks: this is James of Albemarle, b. 1707 in Middlesex.
3. James md. Jean Kelso: this is a different line. He is often "placed" in the
Roger Daniel line, but Herndon's research pretty well disproves that.
We have DNA for all three of these James Daniel lines showing they are different lines.
Is the James Daniel of Oglethorpe GA that you are describing the one who d. 1821? This one
is from the James and Jean Kelso line. He doesn't seem to have a sister Nancy to be
your Nancy who married William Payton.
Back to the Payton family, are you able to place your William Payton in Granville? I can
only find one record of a Peyton involved with a Daniel in the Granville court, land,
probate, etc. records. It's from court 5 Aug 1789 where J. W. Daniel was a witness for
Thomas Peyton and wife suing William Rogers. This looks to be the John William Daniel of
the eastern Granville line (Roger Daniel).
Looking forward to hearing more from your research.
