Hi Asa and the list,
As it seems that we do not have any South or Southern Africans on the list, I'm
sending messages to Daniel's who make use of the general Rootsweb List in South Africa
to see whether we can broaden the horizon. I would hope that by doing so American
subscribers may learn something of Daniel's that have left America to settle
elsewhere. The problem is that people don't seem to leave the USA; they go to the USA
and stay (My daughter and son-in-law have!). The only emigrants from the USA seem to be
temporary of nature and members of the diplomatic Corps or UN.
If the general consensus of subscribers to this list, and Asa of course, concur, I shall
from time to time select items of general genealogical interest from the South African
Rootsweb list and forward them to the Daniel list.
We have for instance had a long going discussion on the South African list regarding
"Selective research". We found that many early researchers neglected to record
relatives of colour. Now that we have a racially free society, a whole new world is
opening up as researchers find that very few, if any South Africans who have been in South
Africa for four or more generations are "lily white".
The Daniel surname in South Africa is common among all racial groups. We are truly (in
Nelson Mandela's words) a rainbow family!
Another subject of general interest on the South African list has been a most interesting
(and to a novice like me) enlightening subject, and deals with primary and secondary
sources of information.
Please let me have your views on my suggestions. As a relatively new member of this list,
I do not wish to ruffle feathers!
