Some wealthy Daniel cousins of Richmond, Va, spent several thousand dollars
with professional genealogists examining the records available in Virginia
and Great Britain. They hired genealogists in both countries, at least four
separate agencies, that I am aware of. After verifying that William Daniel
of Wigan was not William of Middlesex County, Va they looked elsewhere, but
did note a few findings about the Wigan Daniels.
The University Alumni for Oxford shows that Peter Daniel (b. ca 1560),
father of Col. William of Wigan(who md Dorothy Forth), and Peter Jr., Col.
William's brother, both graduated from Oxford University. Peter Jr. was b.
ca 1585/1586, served as a member of Parliament for Chesire in 1623 and died
18 April 1658.
Col. William of Wigan did not graduate from Oxford, though his son, William
Jr., did. The Alumni describes William Jr. as son of William Daniel of
Wigan, gentleman. Wm Jr. was aged 18 on 21 May 1669, when he enrolled at
Oxford and qualified as a barrister at Gray's Inn in 1680. Record of Col.
William's 1695 will survives, but not the actual will. The genealogists
dropped thier research into this line at this point as there was no
possible connection to William of Middlesex.
The genealogists do not list other siblings of Col William, thought they do
not say there were none.
Some of the genealogists employed were Debretts, Mrs. Carolyn H. Jett and a
