The two lines, in my case, are separated by a great distance in place and
time - - -that is, so far as presently known.
My grt-grt grandfather was William T. Gunter (Lt. Col., CSA) b. 1817 Warren
Co., TN, removed with his father (John G. Gunter, b. 1793 Burke-Buncombe Co.,
NC), his siblings and his grandfather (Augustus Gunter , b. 1760-70) from
Warren Co. to Marion Co., TN c1818-20. Subsequently, c1825, John G. Gunter
"stepped over the line" bet. TN/AL where they'd been living in Marion Co.,
& took up residence in Bridgeport, Jackson Co., AL. Only a few miles south of
where they'd lived in Marion Co. and still on the TN River.
William T. & wife Cynthia Gunter left Bridgeport after the Civil War, c1865,
and removed to Dale Co., AL where William T. was killed by a carpetbagger in
1869. Shortly thereafter, c1873, Cynthia and her children removed to Texas
where my line (most of them) have been to this good day. Though two of the
younger children have dropped from view after that move.
I might be able to help some with your Gunter line with dates and places
The DANIEL line appears in connection with the will and estate records of
Charles Gunter of Lancaster-Middlesex Cos., VA. Charles Gunter m. Judith
Guttery (Guthrie), 1734, Christ Parish Church, Middlesex Co., VA and wrote
his will in 1750 (dec'd. by or before 1754). The will was recorded in
Lancaster Co., naming wife, Judith, ch. William (b. 1736), John (b. c1744),
Jane and Charles. Wits: James Ball, Jr. and Charles Fleming. In effect,
Charles's son William was a 14-yrs-old boy at the time his father's will was
In Middlesex Co., William Gunter "Jr." was appointed guardian to John,
Charles and Jane Gunter, orphans of Charles Gunter. This entry was witnessed
by William Gunter, Sr. and William Montague, 4 Jul 1758. William Gunter, Sr.
in 1758 is speculated as a brother of dec'd Charles.
Also in Middlesex Co., the Gunter & DANIEL names appeared several times
together beginning 1752 - GEORGE DANIEL admin. of Charles Gunter; GEORGE
DANIEL, guardian to William Gunter, John Gunter and Charles Gunter, orphans
of Charles Gunter (same day, mo, 1752); and a William Gunter, guardian to
Jane Gunter, orphan of Charles Gunter.
By the look of it, it would appear that between Charles Gunter's death in
c1750 and May of 1752, Judith (Guttery) Gunter had remarried - to GEORGE
DANIEL, as, not only is he guardian of her children, but he is also guardian
to Jane "Guthrie" and Anne "Guthrie," orphans of John
"Guthrie." 3 May 1757.
Judith Guttery Gunter's children by a former marriage? Judith's deceased
Since Judith's children by Charles Gunter were under guardianship 1752 and at
that date, her eldest son by Charles Gunter, William - already 16, it's
difficult to imagine that she would ALSO have underaged children from a
former marriage as late as 1757 - especially children not already under
My Gunter line carries the names Thomas MONTAGUE Gunter (younger brother of
William T.) and William MONTAGUE Gunter (a grandson of John G. Gunter), which
are suggestive of connection (of some kind) with either the senior Charles or
senior William Gunter of Lancaster-Middlesex - or - a possible brother to
them both presently unknown.
I'm seeking identification of the GEORGE DANIEL appearing in the
Middlesex-Lancaster Co., VA records.
