From: Joyce (Woodruff) Terrana, email: SALTERR(a)AOL.com Re: additional
data that Heinemann didn't have in his book on the Daniel Family. I have been
working on a book of my own for years, specializing in descendants of Obadiah
Daniel. I'm using the numbers below that Heinemann used (when I can), for
understanding of my line of descendency. As you can see, Heinemann only
listed about half the children of #57 Icabod Daniel and wife Rachel.
#1 CAPT WILLIAM DANIEL of Middlesex Co, Va. and his first wife (whose
name has not been proven).
#2 (son of #1) WILLIAM DANIEL JR and his 2nd wife, Mary Moseley b ca
1680-1690 Middlesex Co, Va., d Mar 1719 Middlesex Co, Va. Mary was daughter
of Marvel Moseley Sr and wife Sarah Blaise (Blaize, etc).
#19 (son of #2) OBADIAH DANIEL and wife Sarah Moseley. Sarah was cousin
to Obadiah. Her father was John Moseley, sister to Obadiah's mother. Sarah
was grandchild of Marvel Moseley Sr.and Sarah Blaise.
#57 (son of #19) ICHABOD DANIEL (Icabod), born 10 Aug 1756 Goochland Co,
Va. , died intestate ca Nov 1829 Goochland Co, Va. married ca 1775 to Rachel
Thurston born ca 1756 Va. d 1841-1849 Rutherford Co, Tn. Have copies of many,
many documents involving Icabod during his lifetime. Here are their known
CHILDREN OF #57, ICABOD DANIEL SR and wife,
(all children born Goochland Co, Va.)
The first 4 children listed by name as children of Icabod Daniel (Sr), in
their Uncle Ezekiel Daniel's will of 1789 were (in this order): Obadiah
Daniel, Polly (Mary) Daniel, John Daniel and Thurston Daniel. Only 6
children named in their father's 'gift deed' of Feb and July of 1797 which
were (in this order): Obadiah Daniel, Mary (Polly) Daniel, Thurston Daniel,
Ichabud Daniel, James Daniel, Elizabeth Daniel. We know that John had died
bef 1797. Know very little about Elizabeth? I'm sure George Anderson, Mahala
and Henry T. were not listed in 1797 as they had not been born yet.
Of their 10 or more children, most of the ones that reached maturity
(if not all) moved to Rutherford Co, Tn. By 1820, Thurston and James were
there. In the 1830s Icabod Jr (with their mother Rachel) had arrived and
lived with James. By 1840 their daughter Mary (Polly) married there for 3rd
time, may have come about same time as her mother Rachel. By 1840, their
youngest son Henry T. was there with his family (having made a slight detour
to Fluvanna Co, Va. in 1830 to get married). Of these 10 children, it is
likely that only 4 of them had children that lived to maturity.
1. (# 159 in Heinemann's bk) OBADIAH DANIEL born before 1789, died
between 1805-1811, alive Nov. 24, 1789, named as son of Icabod's in his
uncle's 1789 will and again in his father's 1797 deed, was security for
marriage of Garrett Daniel in 1805, died bef 16 Dec 1811 probably at
Goochland Co, Va. Not listed in the 1829 document as heir of his father.
(Named after his paternal grandfather)
2. JOHN DANIEL born?, alive Nov. 24, 1789, died in Goochland bef 1811
(probably before 1797 as not mentioned as child in his father's Feb 1797
deed), not mentioned in his father's 1829 document which described heirs.
3. (#160 in Heinemann's book) MARY DANIEL called "Polly" b ca
died testate ca 2 July 1849 Cannon Co, Tn. (her will later revoked). Not sure
she ever had any children by her 3 husbands. She was listed as Polly, a
daughter of Icabod in her uncle Ezekiel's 1789 will. She was listed as Mary,
daughter of Icabod in his 1797 deed. First marriage in Goochland Co, Va., 28
Dec 1814, Mary Daniel to William Hodges, sec: Thomas James (2nd marriage for
William Hodges). William died testate in Fall of 1827. Mary was listed in
1829 probate documents as heir of Icabod Daniel Sr, and described as 'Mary
Hodges formerly Mary Daniel' and also as 'Polly' Hodges. 'Mary
married 2nd time in Goochland on 6 Apr 1830 to Nelson R. Parrish by John H.
Miller, Robert Mims (?sec). Mary had inherited slaves from her uncle
Ezekiel, her 1st husband and her father Icabod in 1829. Nelson and she
listed in 1830 census with no kids at home (she was listed as born
1790-1800). Nelson must have died and Mary moved to Rutherford Co, Tn (about
same time as her mother) where 'Mary Parrish' married for 3rd time (#430) to
William Parker 17 Dec 1840 by P. L. Miller, J. P.. In summer 1840 census,
she was listed as Mary Parris (Parrish) born 1790-1800, neighbor to Thurston
Daniel, no kids but with 6 slaves.
'Mary (Daniel) Parker' died testate, will made 17 May 1842, probated ca 2
July 1849 Cannon Co, Tn. Will mentions (her 2 brothers) Thurston and James,
witnessed 1842 by Mahala Daniel and Docia Ann Daniel (2 daughters of Thurston
Daniel). Estate of Mary Parker further probated 1857 in Rutherford Co, Tn
Chancery Ct as follows: left her estate to her 3 (living) brothers,
Thurston, James and Icabod Jr, and to children of another brother deceased
but not named (his kids were named-listed below) and to her nephew by her
deceased sister who married a French (her sister's son named Spottiswood
French). Mary Parker's estate continued to be settled in Rutherford Co up to
1858, as it involved 6 slaves (George, John, Judy, Hobson, Betsy and Creasy).
4. (#161 in Heinemann's book) THURSTON DANIEL born 4 Mar 1788 Va., lived
Va. to ca 1813-1818, in Rutherford Co, Tenn by 1820 census, married E. Hettie
Gilliam by 1820 (can't find marriage). Thurston listed as son of Icabod in
his uncle's will 1789, and in 1797 deed as son of Icabod and again as heir of
his father in the 1829 documents which divided his father's estate. Thurston
died Aug. 1868 Rutherford Co, Tenn. His wife E. Hettie came to Tenn. ca
1817, died 28 Feb 1880 both buried on old Daniel farm in the Daniel Cem, l
mi. no. of Readyville (farm now owned by Adams family), have pics of
tombstones. We have copy of one of their son's death certificate which stated
his parents were 'Thurston Daniel and Hettie Gilliam'. Another son named his
first born 'William Gilliam Daniel'.
5. (#162 in Heinemann's book) ICABOD DANIEL JR born ca 1790-1794 Va. died
ca Feb 1854 Rutherford Co, Tn, surely never married, listed in 1789 document
of his uncle and in 1829 document as heir of his father. In 1829 his brother
Georga A. Daniel had to represent his interests as an heir. Icabod Jr
arrived in Rutherford Co, Tenn by 1837 where he appears in documents as 'non
compus' (idiot) with his brother James as guardian. Since his mother (Rachel)
arrived ca 1836-9, he likely came with her. Until his death, one of his 2
brothers were listed as guardian for him every year in Rutherford Co, Tn
records. In 1840 both Icabod (Jr) and his mother lived in the home of his
brother James Daniel and his family. By 1850, only Icabod (Jr) listed as
living with James. Icabod died 1854, left an estate of 4 negroes and more.
The children of his deceased brother Henry T. Daniel Sr (b 1800-1810) were

Militia 1814-15 and left for Tennessee shortly after. According to his
pension app, 'married Goochland Co, Oct 1815 to Catherine Glass' (born 1794
Virginia). That wasn't quite right: Catherine (Glass) Hopper married 2nd, Oct
29, 1817 to James Daniel. by Lewis Chaudoin, minister, wit: William Hodges.
James listed as heir of his father in 1829 documents. James/Catherine lived
Rutherford Co, Tenn. together from 1820 to 1850. They got a divorce, 20 May
1851 in Rutherford Co. She was still there, 1860 as head of house, and died
there by 1866. James was not in this county in 1860, but about 1868-1870 was
in Coffee Co, Tenn where he died ca 28 July 1875 and left numerous probate
7. (#164 in Heinemann's book) ELIZABETH DANIEL born between 1789-1797,
died? Listed once as Icabod's daughter in his 1797 gift deed to his
children. Also listed in Jan 1799 will of 'Elisabeth Thurston' as an heir,
and daughter of Rachel and Icabod Daniel, (will witnessed by Obadiah Daniel,
son of Icabod/Rachel). Elisabeth Thurston was either her maternal aunt of
grandmother Little else known...needs further research.
8. (#165 in Heinemann's book) GEORGE ANDERSON DANIEL born 1797-1800.
Listed as Anderson Daniel in 1829, heir of his father Icabod. Listed on 1830
census, Goochland Co. Probably never married. George A. died between Aug
1832-Mar 1833 leaving property to his mother, Rachel. His will recorded in
1833, Goochland Co book 29, page 245. Note: his mother Rachel, recorded the
same identical will, again but she was now in Rutherford Co, Tenn in 1835
where it is recorded in their books (in order to sell slaves, have copies of

June 1824, "Mary Mahala, daughter of Rachel Daniel" to Daniel French, sec
Leonard M. Daniel. She died before Nov 1829 as her ONLY CHILD was described
then as an infant named Spottswood French, grandchild and heir to Icabod Sr:
"with Hugh French guardian of Spotswood French, Mahala French formally
Daniel, mother to Spotswood". Spottswood French listed 1857 in Rutherford Co,
Tn document, as heir of his aunt, Mary Parker in 1850s, even tho he was still
living in Virginia. Spottswood married (Sarah) ca 1860-1862 and died in War,

census, where he received land grant same year. Henry and Virginia's children
were heirs of their father, and also heirs of an aunt and uncle: above Icabod
Daniel Jr and Mary Parker.

I HAVE SEPARATE FAMILY GROUPS ON (above) ON #3 MARY 'Polly', #4
THURSTON, #5 ICABOD JR, #6 JAMES and #10 HENRY T.
