I have tentatively traced the Thomas Daniel who was in Madison and Greene
Counties, IL to Washington County, VA. He was in the 1782 tax list there
with several families that also moved to Illinois. An easy one to spot was
Philemon Higgins. There were also several Greene families. I am still
sorting this out. In the same precinct in 1782 were James, Wyatt and
Marmaduke Daniel. This tax list is on line at:
A Philemon Higgins was in close proximity to Thomas Daniel in 1782, 1818
and 1820. If this is the same Thomas Daniel, it is putting him more in the
age range to be the father of all the men I have identified as probable
sons of a Thomas Daniel. It seems as if Philemon, or other Higgins, from
this bunch may have gone to Tennessee before moving to Illinois. Some of my
other unrelated families from Washington and Russell Counties, Virginia
followed this pattern.
I am eyeballing #227 Thomas Daniel, in the Caroline County bunch, in
Heinemann's book, part 1, as a possible candidate for this Thomas Daniel. I
have not been able to place Philemon Higgins in Kentucky, though. There
were several other Higgins in tax lists in Kentucky at the same time as
Thomas and the other Daniels in Clarke and Montgomery Counties, though.
They seemed to be in the same general area as the Daniels as they
disappeared from Clarke Co., tax lists and appeared in Montgomery Co., tax
lists along with the Daniels.
