I have mentioned this name before in relationship to the DANIEL family
of Elbert County, GA because this man made US history. He was the first
person to kill a US Marshall (John FORSYTH) in the history of the United
States in 1794 in Augusta, Richmond County, GA. This tid-bit of history was
covered on the History Channel several years ago.
What I did not know until yesterday when I was going through the
Richmond County archives was his profession. Believe it or not he was a
Methodist minister and on the grave of John FORSYTH in Augusta Episcopal
Church it states he was killed by "Rev. Beverly ALLEN, a Methodist
I won't go into all of the details of what happened to Brother ALLEN
except to say he was broken out of jail, twice (once in Richmond County and
once in Elbert County, GA) and Brother ALLEN then fled to KY where he lived
an exemplary life, according to most accounts. However, I do know he was
the brother of Thomas ALLEN of Elbert County, GA and I think he was the
brother of Mary ALLEN, wife of Gen. Allen DANIEL of the same location.
No one seems to know why John FORSYTH, US Marshall for the State of GA,
was killed only that he was serving some papers on Brother ALLEN. We also
know his son was later elected as Governor of GA and the ALLENS, FORSYTHS
and DANIELS were also very close, politically, then and later.
