I heartily second Rosalyn's DNA suggestion if you have or know male descendants of
I have some odds and ends, but no real help on the missing kids' names.
The Joshua and Rebecca of Halifax have always seemed the "only" possibility to
be Joshua b. 20 Feb 1782, s/o Josiah and Elizabeth (Key) Daniel of Granville, everything
fits, dates, locations, namesakes, but it's been missing that one necessary piece of
finishing evidence. Could you post more detail on Joshua's will mentioning the Key
legacy? There are multiple Daniel/Key connections, of completely different lines in
Granville, so there may be some wording that can determine this is the correct connection
Elizabeth (Key) Daniel had already sold her part of her Key parents' estate to her son
Samuel on 13 Jan 1822 (DB1-159). The Key legacy in Joshua's will would have to be the
one from Elizabeth's brother Walter who died intestate w/o children, his estate was
divided to his siblings. His sister Elizabeth's children get her share divided to them
(DB6-437 shows that her son William Daniel received his part of his late mother's
share of Walter Key's estate, being 1/7 of 1/9th part, 21 Jul 1835, this is the main
document I've found helping date the death of Elizabeth (Key) Daniel).
A bit more on the kids of Joshua and Rebecca:
14 Nov 1858 VA Halifax - Mary Daniel md. Wm Purkins. She's 26, s/o Josh Daniel and
Rebecca. He's 25 s/o Wm Purkins and Mary. From film 2048454, Marriage registers,
Halifax County, 1853-1915.
Walter went to KY Christian and died there 30 Oct 1853. His death record says he was 48,
widowed, b. VA Halifax, s/o Joshua and Rebecca, cause of death: mumps.
In 1850 this Walter is in KY Christian age 45 VA, with kids Ann 17 VA, Parthena 15 VA,
Sarah 12 KY, Nancy 7 KY, Jas 5 KY.
In 1860 three of the kids, P. 20 VA, Nancy 16 VA, and James 15 NC [yeah, it says NC] are
with a P'Poole family in KY Christian.
Walter Daniel md. Roda D. Pool 13 Jul 1833 NC Granville, but I'm not sure if she has a
connection to the P'Poole family where the kids ended up. Also, Walter must have had a
first marriage because in 1830 he's in Halifax with an apparent wife and daughter
Any more detail you can give on Joshua and Rebecca's kids selling their interest in
his estate would also be helpful: date, buyer, does the deed mention Rebecca's dower,
does it mention Fluvanna (where Walter Key's estate was probated)? If Rebecca is named
in Joshua's will but her dower isn't acknowledged in the sale it would help narrow
in on her death. Depending on the date of the sale, the other 3 kids might not be of age
and couldn't sell their part except by their mother or guardian. The 1830 census shows
Joshua has 3 kids who weren't of age at his death (boy 5-9, boy 0-5, girl 0-5).
Looking forward to hearing more and hopefully finalizing the i.d. of this Joshua as the
Joshua s/o Josiah and Elizabeth Daniel. I've been so tempted for so long to join them,
your records may make it possible at long last!
