Hi - things have moved on a bit re James Newton Grindrod. We have discovered that our JNG
had three children by his first wife (although the children were born before they actually
married). Our JNG had three children, all born in Manchester, Mary (b. 1836), James
(1838), and Edward (1840). Mary married in England and died in London in 1901.
We lose track of James and Edward after the 1851 census when they were scholars at a
school in Altrincham, Cheshire.
I wonder if this James born in 1838 could be your James Newton Grindrod? The birthdates
seem to fit. We have found a Martha Newton Grindrod, christened 11 August 1872 in
Milnthorpe, Westmorland, England - her father is a James Grindrod and mother Martha. This
would perhaps fit with your JNG returning to England from Australia?
No proof as yet - but the details seem to loosely hang together. I'll keep
