I for one would like a guideline I could refer town coord. to. I tell my prospective town
coord. generally the same as the USGenWeb guidelines, except on the town level.

Thanks, Pat, for beginning this conversation,
Thanks, also, Jim and Julie and others for your comments and opinions.
My 2+ cents worth:
1. CTGENWEB LOGO:
I agree. It's been something I've thought about, too.
Here's how USGW handled their contest.
http://usgenweb.org/volunteers/logo_contest.shtml
Are there any volunteers interested in coordinating such a contest?
2. TOWN COORDINATOR GUIDELINES.
I just read your New London guidelines. Great job. They embrace the
USGenWeb Project guidelines, but add a bit more CT specific info. Plus,
I like that you encourage creative individuality. That's important to
me, too.
I agree with Julie and Jim about not requiring volunteers to adhere to
themes. Pride of ownership in one's own pages is important. I offered
to create a template with the top links, town logo, and the basic CSS
files for a TC in Fairfield and it was welcomed and coming soon.
All: please read Pat's page. It's helpful and informative.

What do other members feel? Shall we have a Volunteer Guideline page for CTGenWeb?
I do feel they should be guidelines, not "laws."
As the CC Leader, guidelines are good, as long as the
guidelines adhere to USGenWeb Project guidelines (IOW, not add elements
which oppose national). New TCs with whom I've communicated have ASKED
for such a list, prior to joining and I've always pointed them to the
Volunteer pages at
USGW.org.
3. CHOICE OF HOST
Regarding hosts, if a volunteer is going to spend their discretionary
time working and contributing, they should have the right to choose
their own home on the 'Net. There are advantages to having the counties
and towns within one domain--but it's the coordinators' choice.
(Perhaps if a CC communicated the advantages, and there are advantages,
a TC might feel it is worth doing.)
4. UPDATED CONTACT INFO:
Volunteers: If you change contact information, please update your pages
with the new address and let your CC know. If your E-mail bounces on
CTGen, the new address needs to be tracked down before the member is
removed from the Project. You *must stay subscribed to CTGEN in order
to be a member of the Project. Many thanks to the CCs who have tracked down their TCs'
new addresses and notified me if their own address has changed.
4. BRANDING
Branding is an interesting topic to me. There were Project concerns
about the confusion of the Rootsweb branding over the top (most
important position) of every page for Fairfield and CTGenWeb. There
were volunteer concerns about the search engine that was launched and
then pulled, which was crawling the USGW Project pages on Rootsweb, and
showing up as hits to users of
Ancestry.com. Rootsweb/TGN wrote a note
apologizing for the upset and said that at this time, they would not be
linking USGW pages to their hits form within the paid subscriber pages.
I sent out a note, back when the banners were first introduced, asking
for feedback on whether or not to move the site off
Rootsweb.Ancestry.com. Not because CTGenWeb was in ANY way dissatisfied
with RW. The ones who responded were in favor of the move. As you know,
USGenWeb moved off
Rootsweb.Ancestry.com, too.
5. MISC.:
The FGS/Federation of Genealogical Societies Conference is in September.
http://www.fgsconference.org/index.php
The USGenWeb Project is a member of FGS and it would be great to have
some brochures about CTGenWeb for the visitors to the conference. (As a
former delegate to the FGS, I attended the Conferences and appreciated
that in the exhibit hall and outside the meeting rooms, there were
tables filled with information and helpful genealogy information which
the attendees could stick in their bags for reading and reference. This
would give them a take-away, introduce them to our state project and
give them some tips and ideas about CT research.
Is anyone interested in working on a brochure that represents CTGenWeb,
with a bit about each county/towns and its special resources? If so,
please let me know. Writers? Designers? Coordinators? If no one is
interested, I'll make one, but it would be fantastic to have a
collaborative effort.

Thanks to you all for the input and continued conversation. It's
inspiring to work with you all and to hear about your ideas and
suggestions. Keep up the fantastic work of bringing free genealogy to
the Internet. . . and keep on talking.
