Pat,
You are welcome to discuss the topic here, that is one of the purposes of
this list. I too am debating what to do about the GenConnect boards. I've
never liked them anyhow, preferring mail lists for sharing info.

I was a huge proponent of the GenConnect boards in the beginning, and I think
they were well designed. I was a supporter because I visit so many USGenWeb
county sites that are not being regularly updated. There are plenty of sites
out there right now that got off to a good start in 1996-98 but now have county
coordinators "in name only". In reality they are abandoned counties, but the
SCs feel that something is better than nothing. As we all know, it's not easy
to get someone to adopt a county. At least the GenConnect boards kept things
moving along, and researchers didn't get so frustrated.
As a CC of several counties and someone who has a full time career, I *really*
appreciated not having to deal with queries (vital records are different).
At this moment (and this is subject to change!), I am considering *not*
adopting my boards, but offering a link to them for folks who want to search
and post queries. I'm going to try out a free message board on another server
and use it as a temporary holding area for the transcriptions of actual
documents, such as deeds, marriage records, etc. As time permits, I'll
retrieve them and move them to the actual web site.
I'm not sure how large a file this message board will hold, so I need to test
it.
What is everyone else doing???
