The interesting thing is that, although he offers links to historical and
genealogical societies, the USGenWeb Project and CTGenWeb Project are not
named at all...even in the Links section!
You could tell him where to jump, but maybe a compromise can be found that
would give credit and additional traffic to the Fairfield County CTGenWeb
and Stamford town sites.
I would write him and thank him for his interest, etc., but asked that he:
Credit and give a link to the (1) Fairfield County CTGenWeb main index page,
(2) the main page for cemeteries, possibly naming but not linking the
individual cemeteries, and the Stamford CTGenWeb town site.
He certainly does not need to have the description of Stamford and Barbara's
name on his site without making it *very clear* that it is not part of his
project.
Sounds like he's just an enthusiast who is not familiar with the rules of
the road.

Subject: [CTGEN] Question
Hi,
I'm the CC for the Fairfield Co. CT USGenWeb Project and have come across
something that stumps me and I'm looking to you, George, as SC--and anyone
who has had experience with this, to advise me about next steps.
Barbara Kaye, our fantastic Stamford Town Coordinator and Cemetery Project
Coordinator, told me of a site which (without notification) links the
pages
from CTFAIRFI for his site, "Graven Images, America©"
http://www.geocities.com/georg_b2000/
along with volunteer (?) cemetery photos held at
Yahoo.com
First, let me show you the Cemetery Project within CTFAIRFI:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctfairfi/pages/cemetery/cemetery_index.htm
And an example page:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctfairfi/pages/cemetery/cm_darien/andreas-hoyt.htm
Next, the Town Resources Index for CTFAIRFI, paying particular attention t
o
STAMFORD:

Stamford Town Coordinator, Barbara Kaye
Includes the communities of Bangall, Belltown, Bull's Head, Caritas
Island,
Cove Island, Cummings Point, Davenport Point, Glendale Park,
Glenbrook,

Ridge, Hunting Ridge, Lockwood's Corners, Long Ridge, Newfield,
North
Stamford, Overbrook, Peck Point, Rippowam, Riverbank, Roxbury,
Scofieldtown,
Shippan Point, Southfield, Springdale, Stillwater, Turn of River,
Vidal
Park,
Walluck's Point, Waterside, West Park.

------snip---------
Now, look at George's site, which he has basically copied and pasted from
the
Town Index:
http://www.geocities.com/georg_b2000/stamford.htm
Note how it makes it look like Barbara is the TOWN COORDINATOR for Graven
Images©? And how he's just copied the text from CTFAIRFI?
Next, if you go to one of his sample pages, without crediting the
USGenWeb
Project, he has simply linked the transcriptions, keeping the names
Barbara
gave for the pages, INTACT.
http://www.geocities.com/georg_b2000/Darien-gaven.htm
(scroll down to the links to the data.)
(see
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctfairfi/pages/cemetery/cemetery_index.htm )
And finally, he clearly says he's asking for funding. Funding for what?
"Examples of our ignorance and inactivity and the lack of support we give
to
those dedicated few, working to maintain these sites. Contact if you
can
contribute special skill, equipment, supplies or *money* anything: Get In
touch!
http://www.geocities.com/georg_b2000/goals.htm
Hint: check the 5th goal.
Question: what are next steps? While I admire his enthusiasm to get the
information and photos broadcast to others, he shows no professional
respect
when it comes to "borrowing" data, thus blurring the
identity of the
USGenWeb, CTGenWeb Project and its wonderful volunteers.
I've not written to this guy yet, because I've never encountered something
like this before, and I want handle it properly.
Best regards, Maureen Mead
