Help! Came across my notes on Josias HULL, one of the first settlers of
Killingworth, Conn. (now the part that's Clinton, Conn.) and realized I'd
made a note to look for another copy of the following book since the one I
had consulted had a printing error:
The History & Genealogies of Ancient Windsor, Connecticut
by Henry R. Stiles, c 1893
vol 2
Genealogies & Family Histories
It mentions lots of HULL references, but the copy I was looking at in the
Booth Library in Newtown, Conn. (a great resource in northern Fairfield
County off I-84)
where the main HULL pages are missing (pages 416-417) because pages 409-416
are replaced by a repeat of pages 81-88 (but the missing pages weren't in
that location.)
Anyway, here is what I did gather, for anyone else seeking similar lines:
Josias & wife (Elizabeth Loomis) were both believed to be born in England and
had 10 children born in Windsor.
The Hull family had property on the Connecticut River in 1640-53.
Josias paid for a "long seat" in the meeting house for himself & wife per
the
record of Jan 18 1659-60 (6s)
On Mar. 7 1664-5 was recorded: "Nath'l BISSELL paid for his seat in the
gallery to Josias JULL (HULL) in pay for his wolf, 6s" (I presume six
shillings is meant)
Josias was paid for shooting a wolf by the town [of Windsor] on July 3 1667
Naomi, daughter of Josiah[sic] HULL, born in Windosr,
married 4 Jan 1676 at Killingworth to
Thomas BURNHAM (4th ch and eld. son Thomas Sr.)
Naomi died 15 Mar 1727
Thomas BURNHAM died 19 March 1726.
They had 8 Burnham children between 1678-1696.
Elizabeth HULL (probably a daughter of Josiah)
married 28 Nov. 1661 to Israel DIBBLE
7 children were recorded in old church records, the oldest named
Josias Dibble
Mary HULL (daughter of Josiah & Elizabeth LOOMIS HULL)
born in Windsor, Conn., 8 Oct 1648
married John GRANT 2 Aug 1665 at Windsor
John Grant was born 30 Sept. 1642 at Windsor
John & Mary GRANT had 6 children:
John
John (both died as infants)
Mary (dau.) who married 1674/5 (?) Alexander ALLYN
Elizabeth (dau.) who married in 1675 (?) Thomas FILER
Abigail, who married in 1679/80 Dr. Samuel MATHER
Josiah, born 28 Jan 1682, who married Sarah COOKE 30 Mar 1710
Sarah COOKE was daughter of John
About 1726 Josiah HULL & wife Sarah removed to Litchfield.
Matthew, the father of John Grant
was the recorder of Windsor
Matthew died 16 Dec. 1681, having lived 4 years with his son John
Per Mathew's will, dated 9 Dec 1681
published in "Ancestry of Gen. Grant"
John Grant was the 5th child of Matthew and Priscella
John Grant died 22 July 1684
Mary HULL GRANT married a second time to John CROSS on 3 Nov. 1686
Mary and John CROSS had a daughter,
Hannah CROSS, b 10 Apr 1694, died Dec. 1696
Mary (wife of first John Grant, then John Cross) died 23 July 1721
The biographical entry for Josias HULL in the History of Middlesex County
on page 237 under Prominent Men of Clinton
"Josias Hull, one of the first settlers, emigrated from England to
Windsor, Connecticut., about 1640.
He married Elizabeth, daughter of Joseph LOOMIS, of Windsor, May 20 1641.
He was deputy to the General Court from Windsor in 1659, 1660, and 1662.
He removed to Killingworth in 1663, and died November 16th 1675.
He was the ancestor of all of the name [HULL] now residing in Clinton and
Killingworth.
This is Martha speaking again. Note that the original name of the
Killingworth settlement in 1663 was Hominoscitt (various spellings)
Plantation. Today it is Clinton, two towns West of the mouth of the
Connecticut River, where a former island (called Cedar Island today, although
it is now an isthumus) protected a harbor fed by the Indian and Hamonnasett
Rivers.
Hope this was useful to someone! Cheers!
