Dear CTGenWeb Project CCs, TCs and volunteers,
I'm Maureen Mead and I've accepted the nomination as State Coordinator for
the coming election year. I believe that both your candidates have a passion in
serving the CTGenWeb Project and wish to serve both the Project, its fellow
volunteers and our visitors.
I'd like to share a bit about my life and my experience with online
genealogy. Most specifically, my passion for Connecticut genealogy.
Prior to my joining the USGenWeb Project in 1996, I had been active on
America Online as GFA Mead. Genealogy chat was so new in 1993. I was honored to be
asked to lead a New England Special Interest Group/NESIG in the old Genealogy
Forum. What a great time! Many Wednesday evenings, our three-host team enjoyed
hours of New England chat, with rooms filled to capacity and people waiting to
join in with the conversation. The NESIG conducted small lectures, led open
genealogy chat, and invited others to share their expertise with the attendees.
As a Sr. volunteer leader for the Genealogy Forum on AOL, I also served as
the Forum's marketing manager, conference coordinator, training administrator,
mentor guide and for several years--as the delegate to the Federation of
Genealogical Societies/FGS, traveling to the host cities to represent the Forum.
As primarily print art director and graphic designer for many years, it was
thrilling to embrace both "New Media" and to share my interests in Connecticut
genealogy. I asked to volunteer as CC for Fairfield County because my MEAD
tree is the most concentrated--beginning with early Stamford and Greenwich
settlers. My daughter also has a rich Connecticut heritage, with her POND, SMITH,
DIBBLE, CLARKE and UTLEY families.
I have always enjoyed volunteering and collaborating with others. I believe
we all get back so much more than our own initial gift of time and talents. It
is compounded with the shared knowledge of others. New friends, new cousins,
awesome new information about our heritage. What could be better?
In 1996, when I discovered that Fairfield County as part of CTGenWeb, was
adoptable, I felt thrilled to be accepted as its CC. Thanks to George Waller for
his many years of gentle and consistent leadership as the State Coordinator.
In the course of "giving back" I have enriched my own knowledge of my CT
Family history, met many new cousins and friends and been thrilled by the joint
collaboration of volunteers and researchers. I don't believe it could have even
happened without the Internet--and the CTGenWeb Project.
A few years ago, I was honored to be asked by SC George Waller to serve as
the Asst. State Coordinator for CTGenWeb, and to serve as its web mistress. Most
recently, after consultation with George, it was decided to move CTGenWeb off
Rootsweb, to its own domain. Thank you to the CCs/TCs who also sent input for
the transition.
In my private life, I continue as an art director/designer and enjoy my new
role as first-time grandmother of a soon-to-be 2 year old boy.
I currently live in Washington State, but have traveled many times to
research in Connecticut. Connecticut is such a gold mine of genealogy history and
records.
I also serve on the board of my homeowner's association as both trustee and
as their web mistress/newsletter editor.
If I am privileged to be elected as your State Coordinator, I promise to
carry on the tradition of leadership and vision already established--first by Jim
Rothgeb and for these many years by current SC, George Waller.
If elected, I would endeavor to serve as a conduit to new ideas and joint
collaboration, as we move forward as members of the USGenWeb Project.
My best regards,
Maureen Mead
