Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

I think a CTGENWEB logo would be a great idea also. I even like the idea of
a unified theme, but have to agree with Jim and that some people haave spent
considerable time on their existing pages and may not appreciate asking them
to change it. Getting everyone to agree on a theme may be impossible. I also
like the idea of Pats ' town coordinator guidelines.
Are we making it mandatory that people move their pages off of Rootsweb? I
have some new volunteers who still seem to want to use rootsweb even though
I told them they could get space under the ctgenweb. I am just beginning to
contact the town coordinators to update their links and hopefully I get a
good response. But I also have had a terrible time with people who just
seem to disappear and have not touched the pages in years and question when
to take action and what to do about it. If you email a coordinator and
don't get a response what can you do? I think every town/county should
have a 'last updated' date on the main page so that we know that the person
is still around. Iin the future I may just take over any hartford and
windham town pages that are up for adoption, but that is somewhere down the
road.
There's my two cents worth..... I am chipping away at hartford county still
and any comments or suggestions are always welcomed. I will be working on
Windham once I get hartford a little further along. The town pages of
brooklyn, canterbury, plainfield, putnam, sterling, thompson, killingly and
voluntown have been updated and moved to the new server. I'm sure there
are still a few non working links, but they will be resolved soon.

Subject: [CTGEN] Renewal and Reorganization
Maureen suggested that I post some of my ideas and concerns to the list, so
bear with me.
I know what it's like to be on both sides of this latest big migration from
RW, because many of my county sites were already on other servers, but I
still have to go back and fix links, and my two biggest counties (including
New London County) were just moved from RW.
Since this is going on all over USGenWeb right now, I've been poking around
other states and counties. We've definitely got a good group here in
CTGenWeb! I've seen a lot of areas that look like blighted foreclosed
neighborhoods. People seem to loose interest after awhile, and just bail
(effectively, anyway, although the page is still there).
Here are a couple of things I've been thinking about for our fresh new start
at our new place (Thank you for getting the new domain, Maureen!). I want
to know what Maureen and Jim think, and also other county and town
coordinators.
1. CTGENWEB LOGO. Maureen and Jim didn't know that I was going to suggest
this, but
what about a new CTGenWeb logo? Maybe those State Coordinators, County
Coordinators, and Town Coordinators who are who are graphically talented
could submit some possibilities and we could choose? (I don't know how
we'll choose, since we're such a small voting pool, but I think we'll figure
it out). Then, no matter where our sites are housed, the state, counties,
and towns will all have the USGenWeb and the CTGenWeb logos on each site.
Does anybody think it's a good idea? I confess that I've already created
some (instead of working on my 2007 taxes for the July 15th meeting with my
accountant).
2. TOWN COORDINATOR GUIDELINES.
I've been in touch with most of the town coordinators for New London County,
and we're
chipping away at updating links before I pull the plug on the RW site.
However, I have
not heard from everyone, and it looks like a lot of town pages haven't been
touched in 4-5 years. I know that some folks have changed computers and
have lost their FTP and RootsWeb passwords, and I hope that RW can help them
out. In the meantime, there are a lot of old pages with bad links. I've
completely lost at least one TC whose page is still on RW, so one of the
many questions is when do we take action, and what action can and should we
take?
I've looked at other New England states, and it looks like many of the
counties have town clerk information and links on the county site, but not
as many counties have separate town pages.
I'm proposing that we come up with guidelines for CTGenWeb Town
Coordinators, and stop encouraging separate town sites on other servers. In
the meantime, I've written guidelines for New London County, but I don't
know if I even have any authority to make my
own rules...?
http://www.ctgenweb.org/county/conewlondon/towns/towncoordinators.htm
For me, this 3.5 month relocation has been like rebuilding after a tornado,
so it just seems important to have what Maureen calls "branding" for the
USGenWeb sites.
OK, that's my two cents. Any responses, comments, concerns, ideas?
Thanks for listening!

Pat,
I am a town coordinator for some towns in Windham County. I have read all the emails back and forth on moving sites from Rootsweb to ctgenweb. Why has this migration taken place? I guess I missed some details. Could you please fill me in? I appreciate the information.

New London County also has moved to http://www.ctgenweb.org/county/conewlondon/ , and I've
sent out an e-mail to folks who have town sites linked from NL. I've got the site search
on NL working now, and have a redirect page at RootsWeb. I'll leave my internal pages up
at RW for a very short time, but they may cause even more confusion to visitors since I
reorganized, and changed directories and file names.
At this point, I know I need to go back and check any links to USGenWeb Special Projects.
This is never fun, but I think we'll be relieved to have it behind us and get back to
adding new information and updating pages. I know *I* will!

Thank you, thank you, thank you ... absolutely love the idea of a CTGenWeb logo. In TX we have a logo for the state and I believe it gives the counties a coordinated look.
Re moving towns from rootsweb. Worked on that over the long holiday weekend for Litchfield and New Haven counties and I too seem to have lost some town coordinators who have not moved their "stuff". I keep a backup for each town and though it may not have all the stuff the town coordinators have or have not contributed, at least when a town coordinator disappears I have something to put up and start with.
The really time consuming part is the broken links that appear as pages are being moved and I need to track down where they moved to.
Again, logo is a great idea.

I agree, Jim.
Not having town sites in SCGenWeb and GAGenWeb, I'm sort of at a loss. CTGenWeb, New
London, Hartford, and Windham have moved or will be moving soon. It's really confusing to
visitors if they find a site through search engines and try to follow bad links.
I don't really have any solutions.....just a problem.

Hi, I guess I guess I should finally weigh in. A "logo" or maybe a theme would be a great idea, and combining the towns would also help, but, we need to be care full, some people have invested considerable time compiling information for some towns, so we will have to work out a way of having it both ways.

Hello,

As mentioned previously, we've moved. I left the pages cross-posted on

Rootsweb.com have been deleted, except for the index page.
This includes both CTGenWeb and Fairfield County.
