I made a mess out of this the first time I sent it, am trying again. I have
been trying to find my father's half-siblings without success. They were
raised by neither parent, as nearly as I can figure out. I have tried
looking for every relative I know on the census. I have run out of ideas. I
am soliciting any idea anyone might have.
I found them in the 1880 Westchester County census with both parents as
Robert Lathrop, age 32, m, w, carriage painter, b.
England, parents b. England
Cora Lathrop, wife, age 28, f, w, b. NY, parents b. NY
Emma Lathrop, daughter, age 7, f, w, b. NY, fa. b.
England, mo. b. NY
Charles Lathrop, son, age 5, m, w, b. NY, fa. b.
England, mo. b. NY
Jessie Lathrop, daughter, age 2 mo., f, w, b. NY, fa.
b. England, mo. b. NY
In 1887, Cora's father died in NY. He was a carriage trimmer. That year,
Cora's husband, painter, shows up in the Stamford CT city directories.
Cora's brother, Charles Green, age 41, blacksmith, shows up in South
In 1888, Robert, painter, is in Stamford. Charles, blacksmith, is in South
Norwalk. Catherine Green, Cora's mother, is in Stamford, widow. She came
In 1889, Cora Lathrop is in Norwalk CT. Robert, painter, is still in
Stamford. Charles Green, carriagesmith, is in Norwalk. Catherine Green is in
Norwalk, possibly living with Charles.
In 1890, Robert Lathrop, painter, is in Stamford.
In 1891, Cora is in Norwalk. Charles F. Green, carriagesmith, is in Norwalk.
In 1894, Cora supposedly marries John Jacob Ostrander, unknown where. John
is born and raised in New Canaan, CT. He is in their 1880 census, living
with his parents.
In 1895, Cora and John have a child, my father Stephen. He is born in
Northport, L.I., NY. Cora states she has 5 previous living children. My
father never knew about these 5 children until 1940. They were not with
Cora. One of these children possibly is named Emily.
1900 New York City census has, Manhattan:
Robert Lathrop, age 46, w, m, married 1 year, b.
England, parents b. England, painter
Ellen Lathrop, wife, age 24, b. CT, parents b. Ireland
Catherine Riley, mother-in-law, age 55, b. Ireland,
parents b. Ireland
Steven Riley, brother-in-law, age 19, b. CT, parents b.
Ireland, elevator boy
Charles Green lives in Norwalk as long as I have found him. In the 1920
census he has a wife and several children. These do not appear to be Lathrop
children. I do not have the 1900 census for him.
I have only been able to find one Charles Lathrop who looks remotely
possible to be one of these children after 1880. He lives in Chatauqua. He
is not the right one. I saw him posted elsewhere with a brother Fred and
several other siblings with names or sexes not resembling the ones I have.
John and Cora don't show up again anywhere until the 1910 census. They are
both in Oregon, living separately. They never reunite, nor is there a
divorce. Cora has my father and his younger sister living with her in 1910.
My father eventually was removed from her by the courts.
I know this is long. I thank anyone who takes the time to read this. If
anyone has a response, I would really appreciate hearing from you.
