Thanks for passing that along, but Israel, the son of Lt. John Knapp,
is supposed to have married Prudence Scofield and settled in Crompond,
Westchester Co., N.Y., according to various online family trees.
I found John Knapp Jr.'s estate papers in a book that's available
online, and they make mention of Israel being in Crompond when he took
guardianship of one of John's kids. So that presumably rules him out
as my ancestor.
On the other hand, there is an odd coincidence between this family and
mine. Lt. John Knapp's daughter, Hannah, supposedly married a
Scofield. And guess who settled right next to my Israel in Dutchess
County and was named as an executor of his will? One of Hannah's sons,
I had considered that the Israel from Crompond might have lost his
wife, gone to Dutchess County and remarried. Online genealogies list
only one child for Israel and Prudence, which seems odd for that era.
But the same genealogies say that Israel of Crompond died circa 1785,
and that his widow remarried.
