First Query:
Anyone out there related to this John Coleman line I found on line (outline
below)?
I am particularly interested in Reuben Ross Coleman. I have a Reuben Ross,
wife Priscilla Green who had a daughter named Hannah born 1771 who was first
married to an unknown Coleman and 2nd married to Nathaniel Wickham Marion
before 1810. She had only 3 children with Nathaniel and they were born 1812,
1813, and 1816. She was Nathaniel's first wife. So the 1810 census sure makes it
look as though she could have had children by her unknown Coleman 1st
husband.
Hannah Ross Coleman Marion died in Abbeville, SC in 1818. Nathaniel
remarried and he died in 1839

I've "rescued" an old photograph of Voyle COLEMAN of Havana, Illinois which
was taken at the Hyder Studio in Havana, IL. The photograph appears to have
been taken in the 1880's with Voyle likely about 4 years old at the time it
was taken. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following
information:
Voyle COLEMAN was the son of George COLEMAN and Malissa REORDAN. It is
believed that Voyle married but did not have any children.
Census information regarding the family is as follows:
1900 census of Havana, IL:

born Ireland, a Transfer Driver
Malissa COLEMAN, wife, age 32, born Jun 1867, married 13 years, 2 children/2
living, born IL, parents born IN
Walter V. COLEMAN, son, age 11, born Jun 1888, born IL, at School
Emma B. COLEMAN, dau, age 8, born Jun 1891, born IL, at School
+ 1 servant
1910 census of Havana, IL:

Owns Transfer Co.
Malissa J. COLEMAN, wife, age 43, married 22 years, 2 children/2 living,
born IL, parents born KY/IN
Voyle W. COLEMAN, son, age 21, born IL
Blanch COLEMAN, dau, age 18, born IL
1920 census of Havana, IL:

I am hoping to locate someone from this family so that this wonderful old
photograph can be returned to the care of the family. If you are a member
of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me.

I do not know of any connection between myself and your James Coleman. However I am always on the lookout for more 'Coleman' connections.
Both our families seem to have followed the same Ireland to Scotland pattern, but on the whole, with a small number of exceptions, mine have remained here in the central belt of Scotland.
My great grandfather came to this part of Scotland ca 1871 from the Mullingar area of County Westmeath in Ireland.
He had other Coleman connections in Tyrellspass and Castlelost West still in Westmeath. All were Roman Catholic.
I had a look in www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for any James Coleman born 1854 -58 in Scotland and there are only two viz
1) James, born 1856, Motherwell, Lanarkshire, son of James Coleman & Catherine Gallagher (both common Irish names)
2) James, born 1855, County of Kincardine, (place name not clear), son of William Coleman and Euphemia McAllan
(McAllan is a Scottish surname and name of a famous Scotch whisky).
Both fathers were able to write their names and this often gives clues to their Irish background as a great many Irish agricultural labourers could not read or write at that time.
If you find any more information on your Irish / Scottish Colemans, please let me know.

Hi All
I have just subscribed to the Coleman list, looking at the archive I was staggered at the number of documents and quail at the thought of looking at all of them.
A gt grandfather on my mothers side was James Coleman born 1854-1858 somewhere in Scotland. The earliest record I have found of him is in the 1861 census of England, in Alnwick Northumberland aged 4 with his father John Coleman aged 38 , a wood carver born in Ireland, and his mother Margaret aged 22 born in Scotland .
His next was on 15th September 1874 aged 19 when he was married to Sarah Melluish aged 22 in Sedgefield, County Durham England, there he is a Joiner and his father is John Coleman Wood Carver.
I next found him age 25 in the 1881 census of Sutton in Surrey living at 14 Eleanor Terace, Beulah Park with wife Sarah now 28, daughter Mary age 5, scholar born in Newcastle on Tyne, son John age 3 born in Sedgefield and son Frederick age 1 born Sedgefield.
In the 1891 census I found him at 23 Albion Street in Newcastle on Tyne now 34, still a joiner, his wife Sarah 37, son John age 13 Frederick 11 and now James age 6 and daughter Margaret age 4(my grandmother). Also in this house is his father John now 70 and still a wood carver and mother Margaret 50.
In 1901 he is living at 23 Leazes Park Road in Newcastle, age 44 with wife Sarah age 47 son James 16 a market gardener , daughter Margaret 14 and son George? Age 12(must be Frederick George or George Frederick). Also living there is Margaret Coleman widow age 62, probably his mother a charwoman, a John Coleman age 23 a bill poster (possibly his son) with wife Clara age 21 and daughter Margaret age 2.
Does anyone know of any of this family, Where was James born? (in Scotland) and where in Ireland did his father John originate? Where were they all in 1871?
John Robson
