One simple question for both Coleman and Payne
subscribers to Rootsweb.com:
Was Frances Coleman, the wife of John Paine of
Spotsylvania County, Virginia, the daughter of Robert
and Mary Clayton Coleman? I have seen these folks
listed as her parents, but I have also seen Thomas and
Susan Farish Coleman, among others, listed as her
parents. There are a lot of contradictions if you go
to Rootsweb.com, and I am interested in the correct
answer, along with what proof there is to support it.

My g-grandfather John Coleman (a stonecutter) and his wife Mary (nee Sexton) were born in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Ireland (location/date unknown), immigrated to the United States approximately 1855 1865 and traveled to California. I do not know if they were married on the East Coast or if they married somewhere else.
In 1869 they were in Sacramento, California and by 1870 they were living in San Francisco, where they remained until 1896. According to the 1870 census they had their first child, Catherine (b. 1869) in Sacramento, California. The 1880 census adds Sebastian Patrick (b. 1873my grandfather) and Mary Ann (b. 1876).
There are no listings for either John or Mary that I can identify in the 1900 census. I have tracked John Coleman from 1870 to 1896 through voter registration and the city directories of San Francisco. In 1897 there are no more listings.
I know that in 1895 Mary Ann married Henry N. Riley (of Watsonville, California) and they had one child in 1897. Mary Ann died (date and location unknown) and the daughter was placed in Mount St. Josephs Infant Asylum in San Francisco in July 1902. Orphanage records state that Henry Riley had abandoned the family.
Sebastian Patrick was out of the house and working prior to 1895. He married Louise Mattos (of Irvington, California) in 1905.
I cant find anything about Catherine. I have no family information about her.
Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
