Well, Delores, this is of interest to me, in that your John M. Coleman
was born in 1795, and my James was born about 1800. Though Dinwiddie
Co. Va does pose a problem, Fairfield Co. SC is interesting in that it
is not far from Elbert Co., Georgia. I believe I have read a little bit
of a Coleman line in Butts Co., Georgia, too, though I must be cautious,
because apparently there are quite a few disconnected Coleman folks
running around in Georgia, even at that early date. I am also aware of
Patrick Coleman's family in Fayette Co., Georgia, and have long wondered
if I might be connected to him further back somehow.
You might find this of interest. My James was born in about 1800,
possibly/probably in Elbert County. I KNOW he was married to a woman
named Mary, and I KNOW that two of his sons were named John M.C. and
James Macintosh. Beyond that, there is a marriage record in Elbert Co.
3/31/1824 between James Coleman and Polly Elder (Polly being a nickname
for Mary) which may be my man. I KNOW that my Coleman family eventually
moved on to Henry/Spalding Co. (just west of Butts Co.) in the early
1830's, and lived amongst a whole gaggle of Elder folks, which further
makes me wonder if James married an Elder. I also KNOW that James had
siblings and at least one brother, as he had a nephew named Jeremiah
Coleman. I don't know James' brother's name, nor where he ended up
living, so you can see why I would be interested. Does any of this
information raise any new flags for you?

**************************************
Friends, my earliest known ancestor by my own surname is a man named
James Coleman, who was from eastern Georgia, born about 1800. I suspect
he may have been born in Elbert County, Georgia, as I found a marriage
record in that county some years later which appears to be a match for
him. What I have been trying to find out is who his parents and
siblings were, and hence, where his family came to Georgia from.
In a very extensive web site on a Coleman family connected to Mobjack
Bay, Virginia (which I am sure many of you have seen), located at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Emobjackbaycolemans/index.html
I find the following.....
Some Amherst Co. VA families moved to the Elbert Co. GA area after the
American Revolution. This family appears to be one of them: John
Coleman b. Amherst Co. VA by 1740, m. Susannah Unknown, also of
Amherst Co. John's will was dtd. 22 Oct 1778 in Elbert Co. GA. John and
Susannah had: Charlotte; Thomas m. Edney Unknown who d. 1819 in
Edgefield Co. SC; Elizabeth; Susannah; John b. 6 Mar 1765 VA, d. 11
Nov 1836 Maury Co. TN, m. 1791 in Elbert Co. GA to Mary "Polly" Walker,
dau. of Jeremiah & Milly Walker; and James b. 1775 VA, d. Elbert Co.
GA.
END OF CITATION
Also, my James named his oldest son John, so I am working under the
possibility that James' father was named John, or possibly James, for
lack of a better alternative. If anyone reading this has ANY thoughts
on this, please contact me either through this list, or directly at
daryl(a)dkco.com. In fact, if you have any Coleman people who migrated
into Georgia, primarily the Elbert and Wilkes County areas shortly after
the Revolution, I would really like to hear from you, so we might
compare notes, please.
Thanks and Regards,

AND while I am thinking about it...MY biggest "PROVE IT" feat was.....I had
a marriage certificate for my Ggrandfather stating his mother's last maiden
name was Winchester....there were NO Winchester's in the area....BUT on the
Illinois marriage registry there were 5...in the right county.....I spent
several months digging for those Winchesters....UNTIL I saw that the VERY
LITTLE township I needed was not on Ancestry census..."under construction."
I waited, waited still under construction...finally in a cloud of dust and
hardy Hi HO Silver I fire off an Email to Ancestry and ask what in tar
nation is going on!!!
Two days later there was MY little township ready to open...haaa....I opened
it and what do I see.....? One little Winchester female, Angeline 15yrs
old in a household...with another female who was listed on the marriage
registry as a Winchester...and then I found my GGgrandmother married to a
fella I didn't even realize she had been married to....AND THEN.....I saw
Angelina 15yrs old in a different household.....with several other brothers
and sisters....all listed in the IL marriage registry as Winchesters BUT
under the household of Burdine....for what ever reason...the Winchester
children were not listed by their rightful name.
A very sweet lady who has been a tremendous help to the genealogical
community....wrote a book listing the Winchester children as Burdine
children......because at first glance the Winchester children looked like
they belonged to Burdine......but you see no one really cared about this
little Winchester family, except for me.....because they are MY family. I
posted my information and WOW did I get bowled over with
response.....including the SWEET LADY.....I presented my research and the
SWEET LADY agreed with me.
With all my heart I believe that Angeline and her sister Violet Mary/Mary
Violet figured out how the census was taken and probably they were smart
enough to see into the future....by Angeline being in two households she was
able to leave a hint as to who she really was.....and enable me to find her
and OUR Winchester family....
Yes there is A LOT of erroneous information out there....PROVE IT.

I'm jumping in here...but to confirm......it is true with most surname
research......so many common names....so many sons named after fathers.
AND to top off everything...the "informant" for census...a lot of the time
does not give accurate info, the numerator can't spell or sometimes
write.....so the odds are you WILL find wrong information!!! AND LDS OH MY
WORD!!! If you people moved around.....GOOD LUCK!!! I have been searching
for nearly 10 years (on the internet) and still have 2 families "out there"
were as it took me 3 days to find 2 clans of my husband's family...because
they never moved....stayed right in GA... Coleman's and Digby's!!
Good Luck and Happy Hunting!!!

You can't take either the book or their websites as authentic anyway.

Dear James,
It is a pleasure to know there are still a few real researchers around. Recently, I unearthed a document that proved errors in some old books and many trees, apparently built on assumed information, and for my "helpfullness" all I received was full blown wrath from other Coleman "researchers" who would not change their sites and said "we can post anything we want to.". I was working with one to explain all of the the technical details in the case in question and he replied, "I don't understand why you are doing all this work." I was dumfounded. They do not realize they are collectors of other people's work, they actually think they are accomplishing something. Enough. Thank you for your post and your comments.

Mr. Coleman, I noticed you haven't received any comments from anyone in
reference to your note below! I didn't expect that you would. Most family
researchers get their information from web-sites, & have never been to the
cemeteries, towns, counties, or states. Even after sorting out the Daniel
Coleman of Samuel Coleman & wife Mildred Coffey of Casey Co., Ky. and the
Daniel Coleman of Stephen Coleman & wife Mary A. Foree of Trimble-Henry Co.
Ky., all I received was, don't throw rocks in a glass house. I had even sent

Trimble-Henry Co., Ky. Coleman's, I didn't get any comment back from these
folks, & they still insist on their web-site, that the Daniel Coleman of
Casey Co., Ky. & the Daniel Coleman of Trimble-Henry Co., Ky. were the same.
I find it amusing that this Daniel Coleman could have had two wives, one
from Casey Co., Ky., they lived seven miles from where got married,
Liberty, the other wife from Shelby Co., Ky., and they lived six miles from
where they got married. Here's what I posted about three-four years ago. I

This is what I posted about 3 years ago.
Some of you folks have made a mistake on the Casey Co., Ky. Daniel Coleman &
the Henry Co., Ky. Daniel Coleman. You MIGHT want to change your Coleman
file and correct your books that have been published.
Daniel Coleman of Casey Co., Ky.
Father: Samuel Coleman. I haven't proven it yet, but Sam was married 3
times.
Mother: Millie Coffey
born: 1794 in Va. or possibly in Lincoln Co., Ky., now Casey Co.
death: abt. April 1, 1853 in Casey Co., Ky.
married: Polly Durham Dec. 24, 1822 in Casey Co.
Polly born: 1800
Polly's death: Shortly after the August 1850 census was taken.
Daniel & Polly had 8 children
Daniel & Polly were first cousins
Both are buried on Knob Lick Creek Casey Co., Ky.
A barn has been built over their grave along with 14 other people's graves.
The Gab Wall, that settled the Daniel Coleman estate is buried there , he
still has a stone, which is a miracle. If I'm not mistaken, I don't think
I'm wrong, Daniel's cabin is still standing there on the creek. This cabin
may have been his fathers before he and most of his family moved to Todd
Co., Ky.
Daniel Coleman of Henry Co., Ky.
Father: Stephen Coleman
Mother: Mary Ann Foree
born: July 26, 1794 Prince Edward Co., Va.
death: June 10, 1853
Married: Mary Jeffries 1818 in Shelby Co., Ky. 6 miles from his farm.
Mary Jeffries born Dec. 24, 1796 Shelby Co., Ky.
death:June 14, 1850 Henry Co., Ky.
Daniel & Mary had no children, but Daniel's second wife gave him a son James
Daniel, James was born 1851 in Henry Co., Ky.
Both are buried next to their home, 2 miles off any road, at route 421 &
Beasley Lane. Their house was lived in till 1940 when it burned. The
foundation is still in tact & the well has water in it also. I got pictures
of the stones and area, it is beautiful place for a home. Daniel & Mary
loved 16 miles from Stephen & Mary Coleman, Daniel's parents. Stephen &
Mary's house is still lived in as of this date. My brothers & 2 cousins
rebuilt the Stephen Coleman cemetery last summer. Daniel lived 10 miles from
his cousin, William Lawson Coleman. The William Lawson Coleman house &
cemetery is one of the most beautiful places one could visit. The spindle
that William L. was hung on during the Civil War by Union troops, was
finally replaced last summer.
My brothers, "Dickie" Coleman, Harvey Dennis Coleman, and I have spent two
and a half years, 50,000 miles plus, over 2000 dollars, and a lot of time,
on the research on the two Daniel Coleman's and that is our findings. You
folks can do what ever with your Coleman History File, that is our
conclusion.
The land of Samuel & Daniel, there's 300 acres still being farmed on today
in the Casey Co., by their gggg-grand-daughter.
