I just sent a note of inquiry to Sherrianne Coleman Nicole, and thought
it wise to also forward to this list, in case someone on the list might
be able to comment upon it.
Here it is.
Dear Sherrianne,
I know your time is valuable, and that many people contact you with
questions, so I will be as brief as possible.
First, I have been aware of your work for a number of years and
appreciated it. Up till now, I have considered a possibility between my
Coleman family and yours, but have not found a way to link the two
together. In brief, my Coleman family is known back to James Coleman,
who was known to have been born in eastern Georgia in 1800 or 1801. We
know his wife was named Mary, and we believe she may have been Mary
"Polly" Elder, based upon a marriage record from Elbert Co., Georgia, in
1824. We have long searched for the identity of James' parents, which
would certainly help us connect James with earlier Colemans.
In your document, located at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mobjackbaycolemans/b10missing.h
tm , there is a paragraph near the middle of the document which reads,
Some Amherst Co. VA families moved to the Elbert Co. GA area after the
American Revolution. This family appears to be one of them: John
Coleman b. Amherst Co. VA by 1740, m. Susannah Unknown, also of
Amherst Co. John's will was dtd. 22 Oct 1778 in Elbert Co. GA. John and
Susannah had: Charlotte; Thomas m. Edney Unknown who d. 1819 in
Edgefield Co. SC; Elizabeth; Susannah; John b. 6 Mar 1765 VA, d. 11
Nov 1836 Maury Co. TN, m. 1791 in Elbert Co. GA to Mary "Polly" Walker,
dau. of Jeremiah & Milly Walker; and James b. 1775 VA, d. Elbert Co.
GA.
At this moment, I am most interested in this John, born 1765, died 1836
in Maury Co., TN., because he was married to Mary "Polly" Walker,
daughter of Jeremiah Walker, in 1791 in Elbert Co., Georgia. This makes
the John Coleman you mention the correct age to be the father of my
James Coleman, and places him, for a time, in Elbert County, Georgia. I
am also aware that, during this period in time, many fathers would name
one of their sons after his own father (the grandfather). My James
could have been named either after his own father, or grandfather, as
was the custom at that time. Also, my James had a son named John M. C.
Coleman, and a son named James McIntosh Coleman. In addition, it is
known by us that my James had a nephew named Jeremiah. These facts have
led me to have great interest in the paragraph noted above, written by
you.
My questions are these:
1. What is your source(s) for the information in this paragraph, if
they are known?
2. Where might I find other information on this family you mention,
if it exists?
3. Do you know how I might find a copy of this will of 22 Oct.
1778, or a transcription of the same?
4. I am not only interested in John b. 1765, but also in his
brother James b. 1775, as they both had connections to Elbert County,
Georgia (and Wilkes Co., Georgia, as Elbert was created from Wilkes in
1790).
I would REALLY appreciate a response on this. If you are unable, at
least tell me to whom I might forward this in order to get some answers.
Warm Regards and Many thanks for all of your work,
