Good Morning, Everyone.
My apologies for posting this to the mailing lists that I am on, but I felt
it was important enough to post. It was sent to me by way of a fellow
genealogist. We have enough problems trying to gather correct information as it is
without falling victim to yet one more scam.

Beware of a genealogy FAMILY YEARBOOK scam! - Save your money!
You may have seen this, but there is a company, called Morphcorp LLC, who is
sending mailings to people across the entire United States. They are
offering a "Book and CD ROM" purported to contain "all the <YOUR FAMILY
NAME> records" at the pre-publication price of $34.95 plus a $5 order
processing fee. I just got a mailing the my family surname. I just did a
little checking and found the following information.
These books do not contain family records. They normally contain addresses
and phone numbers of folks with the same last name across the United States
which is something you can get in any phone book on the internet.
Based on Better Business Bureau files, this company has an unsatisfactory
record due to a pattern of complaints. Complaints are concerning a range of
problems, primarily about how the company's product is advertised and
represented. Customers who purchase the product have alleged that it does
not represent their specific family genealogy information.

Hello,
Does anyone connect with Seaton Coleman who is listed on the 1860 Amherst Census.? He is age 26.
>From what line does he descend?
I am searching for a Seaton L. Coleman born abt. 1793. I believe his parents were James and Nancy? Coleman. Possible brother Mason..
Seaton is found in Greenbrier County , VA (WV) as early as 1815 if not before. He then is shown in Nicholas County, WV and then Giles, VA and Fayette Co. VA (WV)
He died in Fayette County, VA (WV) abt. 1854.
He married Mary Parrish.
Children:
Joshua Parrish, John Daniel, Charles Mason, Burton Richard, Seaton Lindsey, Jr., Rachel, Nancy, and Mary Jane. According to the early Tax List, there may have been at least two more daughters.
Can anyone identify this Coleman line??
Is it possible that he connects to this Seaton Coleman listed on the 1860 Amherst Census?
Thanks for any help you might provide.
Becky
With regard to JAMES COLEMAN, my ancestor David Coleman was born about
1813 in Ireland. He had a brother, James S. Coleman born 1818. The family
left Ireland and moved to the U.S. (I don't know where) I don't know if it was
before James S. was born or after. After living in the U.S. for ten or so
years they moved on to Ontario, Canada. I don't know if there could be a
connection or not. Rose Mary

Hi my maiden name is Coleman and have only just recently began to search.
Has anyone come across a Annie Coleman who arrived in USA sometime early 1900's possibly from Bermondsey, London, England.
My aunt in England has a photo of an Annie Coleman taken by a Chicago photographer, but no year, by the clothes we are thinking early 1900's.
My Grandfather was Francis Patrick Coleman born 1888, Bermondsey, London we believe she was part of his extended family, she certainly wasn't his sister but maybe a cousin. She was evidently at my grandparents wedding which I think was approx 1910/1912 as there is another photo of her.
My great Grandfather was John Coleman born 1851.
A lot of people went from Ireland to work in the Bermondsey Tanneries around the 14th century and we believe our family was probably amongst them, believe my great grandparents were very staunch, Catholic, granddad was one of 10 with quite a few Saint names scattered amongst his siblings and his own children.
>From what I have read so far suggests it was originally an Anglo Saxon name , which certainly would fit in with the German connection, with a branch going to Ireland in early centuries.

When making queries on any family, it would be helpful if the location of
residence or birth and the time period of the families were included.
Even if specifics are not known, add any date that might be known or
approximated from information that is known.
Some of us have Colemans that span several centuries and several colonies
and states. On my database are 48 William Colemans, 49 John Colemans and
44 Mary Colemans.

Dear Jim,
Thank you for your kind offer. This is a brief sketch of what I have been
able to uncover so far:
1870 - My great grandparents, Theodore R. Coleman & Sarah Ann Palmer, and
their children are living in New York City - 24th District - 19th Ward -
Station K - Post Office - Yorkville, NY - page 7 starting at line 24 - (all
family members are listed as white and born in NY - Theodore & Sarah
married, children single):
Coleman, Theodore - 44 - est yr of birth 1826 - carriage maker
- Sarah - 28 - est yr of birth 1842 - keeping house
- Charles - 8 - est yr of birth 1862
- Theodore - 5 - est yr of birth 1865 (this is my grandfather full name is
Theodore Wallace Coleman b. Jan 18, 1866)
- Carrie - 2 - est yr of birth 1868
In the 1880 Census the family structure changes a bit, no mention of Sarah's
husband, Theodore, or her son, Charles, however, there is now a younger son,
Willie, who was born after the 1870 Census was taken in NYC.
1880 Port Jervis, Orange Co., NY - Brief information:
Coleman, Sarah - 37 - does sewing
- Wallace - 14 - chore boy (aka Theodore Wallace Coleman, my grandfather)
- Carrie - 11 - at school
- Willie - 7 (est yr of birth 1873)
Port Jervis City Directories 1880 - 1888 Sarah & the children (minus
Charles) are living in Port Jervis, Orange Co., NY - The 1886 directory
specifically has: Coleman, Sarah - "widow of Theodore" the other directory
years have no reference to Sarah's husband at all, so I am guessing she was
widowed all that time, but who knows for sure. No mention of Sarah in any
directories after 1888 - I don't know is she passed away or perhaps
re-married, can't find any obituaries.
Here is the curious thing, 1889 Port Jervis Directory the household consists
of: the following:
Coleman, Miss Carrie
Coleman, R. William (aka Willie)
Coleman, T. Wallace (aka Theodore Wallace Coleman, my grandfather)
Coleman, Walter (no idea of who Walter Coleman is or his relationship)
After 1889 - I only find my grandfather, Theodore Wallace Coleman and his
brother R. William in the city directories. In 1915 my grandfather married
Effie Mae Drake, widow of Manley Carpenter with 3 young children.
My grandfather and Effie Mae had 2 sons, William Wallace, who died at age 18
months and my father, Jacob Theodore Coleman born Nov 30, 1920.
In 1933 Theodore Wallace Coleman died of tuberculosis, my dad was only 12 at
the time - death certificate and obituary states he was the son of Theodore
R. Coleman and Sarah Ann Palmer, born NYC on Jan 18, 1866. Obituary states
he was survived by a sister, Carrie Montbal, and a brother, William, of Los
Angeles. I can't find anything on a Carrie Montbal, I have tried all
spelling variations I can think of and looking for a William Coleman is like
looking for a needle in a haystack.
That is a condensed version of what I have been able to find on my paternal
Coleman family line.
* On my mother's side of the family, I have a 3rd great-grandmother, Maria
Coleman - b. about 1827 in England who married Andrew Lawson Broas on Dec.
16, 1847 in Rosendale, Ulster Co., NY. They settled in the Cantonville area
of the Wawarsing / Ellenville area of Ulster County. The 1880 Census says
Maria was born in England, but that is all I know about her; Andrew Lawson
Broas is buried in Ellenville, has a nice size headstone, but I can't find a
headstone for Maria.
If you should happen to stumble on something, I would sure appreciate any
Coleman tidbits. If you need anything from the Port Jervis area looked up,
let me know, hopefully I can help you out, too.
Thanks so much, Jim. Please visit the Minisink Valley Historical Society's
website at: www.minisink.org

Dear Ethel,
You are very welcome. I keep every bit of information I find on COLEMAN as
it is my maiden name. My father was born and raised in Port Jervis, Orange
County, New York. I live in the Town of Deerpark in a hamlet called
Huguenot which is about seven miles outside of Port Jervis. The Town of
Montgomery where the Goodwill Presbyterian Church is located is about a 35 -
40 minute drive from where I live.
My paternal Coleman's are a bit of a challenge, I can't seem to go back any
further than my great-grandfather's estimated year of birth 1828 in New York
City. From census records, city directories, and obituaries, I know the
family lived in NYC in 1870. Sometime after the 1870 Census was taken, they
moved to Port Jervis as the family is living in Port Jervis in the 1880
census and are listed in the Port Jervis City Directories from 1880 on. My
father died in 1981 and I did not start my Coleman family research until 7
or 8 years ago, so whatever he knew about his Coleman origins died with him.
But little by little, I am making progress.
To make things interesting, while researching my mother's paternal side of
the family, I learned I have a 3rd great-grandmother, Maria Coleman born in
England, married in Ulster County, New York, right next door to Orange
County, New York. I doubt my 2 Coleman lines are related, but one never
knows. Good luck in your research.

Folks,
I am embarrassed to report that I have made little
headway with the task of completing Sherry Nicol's
much-anticipated update to her outstanding 1998 first
volume. I have taken on additional duties at my job,
partly due to additional burdens placed on public
school teachers which supposedly make things better
for teachers and students but don't and partly due to
the fact that I have a daughter who is about to enter
college. Be that as it may, I am deficient in my
duties including updating my web site, responding to
email messages, and updating Sherry's material. I am
truly sorry about this. Obviously, we need someone to
step forward who has the time and interest to continue
the work. The material in my possession belongs to
Sherry. She did the research and gathered the
material so she will have to decide what to do with
it. I will do whatever I can to help get it to
someone who Sherry thinks can continue the work. It's
just not reasonable to think that I can get it done in
a timely fashion given only a few weeks to do so in
the summer. I'm still at least five years from
retirement.
Wishing all of you the best. nzs

For Ethel Zott,
Several years ago I visited the Goodwill Presbyterian Churchyard which is located on Route 208 in the Town of Montgomery, Orange County, New York. There is a Phineas Coleman buried there, not the one you mentioned in your posting, but possibly a link - info as follows - all on the same large monument:
Phineas R. Coleman - b. Mar 10, 1786 - d. Mar 2, 1883
his wife Sarah Ludlum - b. May 15, 1792 - d. Aug 9, 1861
Sarah Jane Coleman - b. Nov 28, 1820 - d. Sept 20, 1841
Mary Ann Coleman - wife of Samuel Rumsey - b. June 23, 1815 - d. Dec 31, 1844
Julia Seward Coleman - b. Feb 27, 1827 - d. Dec 11, 1855
Albert L. Coleman - b. May 9, 1832 - d. Apr 18, 1862
"Children of Phineas R. & Sarah Ludlam Coleman"
On the back side of the monument:
William C. Brewster - b. Aug 7, 1814 - d. Oct 20, 1897
his wife Eliabeth R. Coleman - b. Jan 25, 1818 - d. Apr 13, 1887
For some reason I also wrote down: "Jonas Hawkins", no dates or further information, but for the life of me, I don't remember why, I wrote the name down. It was several years ago when I visited this cemetery, but it must have been on the same monument or a stone very near the Coleman monument.
The Goodwill Presbyterian is still an active church and I believe the cemetery is still active as well. I don't live near there, or I would try to find out more details for you. Good luck in your research.
Jean,
It seems whenever this books is mentioned a ton of questions about it seem to
follow. I have tried to supply a complete answer useful to any who reads
this reply. I have tried to copy all who are mentioned below so that they may
correct any error in the information that I have provided.
The book compiled by Sherrianne Coleman Nicole is described on the following
website:
Click here: The Coleman Family of Mobjack Bay Virginia
Sherrianne Coleman Nicole's email address is: > pr9toes(a)verizon.net She is
> apparently having some health problems and may be slow or unable to reply.
I purchased a copy of the second printing from Ron Coleman of Salt Lake City,
UT a couple of years ago. The email address I have for Ron is >
> r-mcoleman(a)juno.com I don't know if the book is still available from Ron.
As far as I know the following is the current status of the book (from Jerry
Pritcher's website):
>
> Special Note to Mobjack Bay Coleman Researchers and DescendantsThe
long-awaited revision of Sherry Nicol's 1998 book on The Mobjack Bay VA Colemans is
again delayed. Folks, Sherry's health prevents her from continuing this work, and
she has transferred her material to me to complete the task. The research and
most of the organization is complete, so her name will still be attached to
the work. I hope to serve simply as a glorified typist, but please be patient.
Like most of you, I have a full-time job. Her 1998 book is now online and is
linked below. As I complete work on each line, at Sherry's request, I will send
the information along to Wes Coleman to be displayed at this site. If you have
already sent information to Sherry I have it, but if you have additions or
questions feel free to contact me at jerry(a)pricher.net
Mike Coleman.
Does anyone know where I may write to purchase a copy of the second book by
Sherri Nicol on The Coleman Family of Mobjack Bay, Virginia? I purchased the
first one, but have lost the information on where I obtained it.
Thanks,
Jean
I am researching the Coleman family of Phineas Thompkins COLEMAN, born Orange Co., NY c. 1815. He married Phoebe Ann Wolfe on 12 May 1835 in Richland Co., OH. Their children were: Abner b. 1836; Kate b. 1841; Phoebe A. b. 1846; Amy b. 1859. Kate mar. G. Milton WILKINSON; Amy mar. S. T. CAMPBELL. Their mother, Phoebe Ann (Wolfe) COLEMAN died in Lexington, R.C. OH in 1896. Her obit says her daughter, Mrs. S. T. CAMPBELL was residing in Lexington, KY. If anyone has information regarding this family, I would more than appreciate hearing from you. Thank you.

Does anyone one the list know who the TW Coleman family was that is buried in
a crypt in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky? I am sure that it was
TW, but could have been TC. There is no other information on the crypt, just
"T W Coleman Family" over the door. You can see inside and there are either
4 or 6 coffins.
If you have never been to this cemetery, I suggest that you go. However, it
would take a week's vacation to see everything that there is to see. The part
of the cemetery for the Civil War soldiers is just breath taking.
