In response to Betty Wood, I have a Lemuel Parker son of Abraham Coleman and
Elizabeth Parker. Elizabeth Parker was the daughter of Lemuel Parker and
Anna Shockley.
The name Lemuel Caught my eye. I don't have a wife for Lemuel Coleman but I
have him born in 1808 which doesn;t really match your marriage date but
dates can be wrong so if anything matches maybe we can exchange information.
Thanks! kenvan(a)amigo.net

If anyone would have information on my Grandfather - Haygin Coleman from
Pennsylvania. Married to Perlie Brown, having 4 Daughters. 1 Daughter died
as an infant. Any information would be greatly appreciated. My email
address: lorlarlaka1(a)yahoo.com
I found this entry in the Madison Co, AL marriage records.
Lemuel Coleman married Harriet Ware (Wood) ____29, 1816.
Does anyone know of this couple? Betty Wood
Laurann and others,
John Britton Coleman was born in 1897 in Cottonwood Point, Pemiscot County, Missouri. His parents were George W. and Martha Holland Coleman. Martha's father was Britton Holland and that's were the Britton comes from.
I find your GEORGE BRINTON McCLELLAN COLEMAN very interesting also. In the 1880 census for Pemiscot County George W. Coleman is listed as living with his father George I. Coleman and also living in the house are Molly McClanahan (age 25) and Calhoon McClanahan (age 30) - I have no idea who these people are but the name is soooo close to the McCLELLAN in yours. The other people living in the house are G.W.''s sisters and brothers and Martha and Padula Holland (Martha winds up marrying G.W.) George is my greatgrandfather - he is the father to Clay and John Britton Coleman. More later - gotta go the guy is here to look at this crazy computer.

Ellie,
No immigrant that I know of yet, can't get past VA with George I. Coleman and I don't know what county in VA he came from. I am still trying to figure out which George Coleman from VA he is (there were several in VA at the time he was).

Donna,
Who is the immigrant ancestor ( Coleman) and what county in Va. are you working on?
Ellie
AM,
Hey, I don't think that we're talking about the same family - but who knows! Clay had a sister named Lucy and a brother named John Britton - later there is a brother that shows up in 1910 named Edmond but my mother and her sister have never heard anything about him - but they also never heard anything about some step brothers listed in 1910 named Ben and Freddie Dardy - so there you go - doesn't really mean anything! These folks are so hard to find anything about - I can't imagine why - I have found nothing to make me believe they were running from the law or another wife or family.

I am looking for information about a Shelly P. Stiles listed in the 1900 Cottonwood Point, Pemiscot County, Missouri census. He is 15 years old, born in 1885 listed as a nephew of George W. Coleman. George's wife's name was Martha A. Holland Coleman. George had sisters named Zelia and Betty maybe one of them married a Stiles. Any clues? I have a photo and on the back it says, "Clay's cousins Stiles" (note: Clay was George W's son - my grandfather)
Thanks for any information.

Hey all,
I got my e mail and thanks to those who responded back!
Still looking for my George W. Coleman born in 1867 in MO and his father was George I. Coleman born in VA (I think it's I) - still haven't been able to determine which George Coleman from VA he is (there were alot of them) - George W. Coleman first child's name was Clay Watkin Coleman - may be a clue here but unsure still. I know there was a Henry Clay Coleman in the area somewhere but can't connect them.
While on the Coleman subject - Can anyone connect any of the Coleman from MO together for me - mine are from the bootheel Pemiscot County (was part of New Madrid County) - I know there were some Colemans in Old Mine, MO but I can't make any connection in these families. Does anyone have a clue?
Thanks in advance for any "light" one might can shed on these subjects! Keep up the Coleman chatter - it's feeding my Colemanitis.
Regards,
Donna
Does anyone on the list know who this Archer Coleman or Archer Coleman, Jr.,
to? I found them in the 1810 census of Amelia County, Virginia. The
granddaughter of my John J. Coleman was given the middle name of Archer.
Must be a connection there somewhere.

Does anyone recognize these names? We're looking for relatives of Rev. Jeremiah F. Johnson and his wife Harriet Newman, married 1844 in Perry Co, AL. I received this from another correspondant and would like to find out more about the Johnsons, Colemans, and Newmans named here. For clarification, I have added some names, dates, and places in [brackets].
I feel we are getting close in Alabama and want to focus my attention on Township 21, Range 6 in Perry/Hale County. This is where I found Berry Newmun buying land in 1847 and again in 1850. In those transactions a Charles Coleman and William Shaffer are involved. William Shaffer [JP] is the same one who married Jeremiah [Johnson] and Harriet [Newman in 1844 in Perry Co, AL], and Charles Coleman could be the father of Jane Coleman, Berry Newman's wife. There are Johnsons living in the immediate area and one of these could be the family of origin of Jeremiah.
Up until 1868 this piece of land is entirely in Perry County. Afterward it is split down the middle with the western half going into the newly formed Hale County. Berry's holding is just in the Hale half. This explains why he buys land in Perry in 1847 and his daughters marry in Hale in 1868- 1870.
Township 21, Range 6 contains 36 sections that are each 1mile x 1mile x 1mile x 1mile. They combine to make a total geographical area of 6 miles x 6miles x 6miles x 6miles. I want to study this 6 square mile area for our ancestors.
There is plenty to look at. Between 1821 and 1861 there are approximately 200 land transactions involving perhaps 50 different families. We may want to include a few other families from the immediate area, but Township 21 and Range 6, I think, should be our primary area of study.
Using graph paper I have created a map of this area. My map is incomplete, but already I am turning up some interesting names. Within 1 mile of Berry Neuman's house/property are the following- William Shaffer, Charles Coleman, John Coleman, James Johnson, and Frederick Johnson. I would say these names become our highest priority. Incidentally, the two purchases Berry makes in 1847 and 1850 give him 64 acres and 39.9, almost 104 acres.
I think we need to correlate the land deeds with the census records for 1830, 1840, 1850 and maybe even 1860. 1860 is a stretch because Jeremiah has been gone 15 years. But 1850 and 1860 are the only census that gives names of children. I believe that the 1850 and 1860 are online. Maybe we can locate 1830 and 1840 on the computer, but if not we will need to go to a library that has them on microfilm, which is a pain.
If and when I get back to Perry, Hale and Bibb I need to check tax records, mortgages, and orphan court records. I also want to go back to that area and check cemeteries. I also need to write down the exact description of the properties and look at the deeds to see who sold and who witnessed and who the wives were.
I don't feel like a have a handle on the Newmans. I was so sure I would find them in Bibb County, and there are three there- Washington, Henry and James. They don't seem to fit though. Why does Berry go to Bibb and marry Jane Coleman [1844]? Bibb is not that far away and I guess he could have gone there [from Perry Co.], but with a Charles and John Coleman in Perry why would they marry in Bibb (if indeed one of them is the father of Jane)?
One thing that is apparent is that some of the poorer young men worked on others' farms as farm laborers. I guess that eventually they saved enough money and bought land of their own, although I have never found where Jeremiah ever owned land. Berry broke that cycle of poverty by becoming a blacksmith, and blacksmithing may have brought him to Bibb County (he did not buy land there). Then there is that Newman with the strange name [Andinon] that I found in Perryville, and we need to follow up on him.
Still, Harriet and Jeremiah were married by William Shaffer, and Berry must have bought his land in that area to be near family. The fact that Colemans were involved in that land sale seems to indicate that.
I have looked at more of my notes and find that Frederick Johnson married Elizabeth Coleman in 1846. Frederick is around 46 years old at the time, and he is a definite possibility for being the father of Jeremiah. If I recall, Frederick is from Tennessee [or SC?]. The only thing is that he is buried in a Methodist Church cemetery in Hale. Frederick moves to Perry in 1841 (or at least he first buys land there then). He lives very close to where Berry buys his property.

I've "rescued" an old photograph of Robert P. COLEMAN of Richmond,
Massachusetts which was taken at the Knowlton Bros. Studio in Northampton,
MA. The photograph was likely taken in the 1890's with Robert appearing to
be in his early 20's at the time. I believe he may have been a student at
Massachusetts Agricultural College.
I'm hoping to find someone from his family so that this wonderful old
photograph can be returned to its rightful place with family. If you are a
member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me.
Thanks,
Shelley

Hello, I am new to the list. But old to searching this family.
My Colemans I found in 1900 in Kaufman County, Texas.
I found my grandfather was born in Logan county, Arkansas in 1880. His name
was NewmanDock) Coleman, His father was Robert A Coleman, born in GA and
married a Sallie Bostick.
I can't find them listed in Arkansas, but all their children were born in
Arkansas.
Thanks for any response.

Dear List:
I wrote to Sherry over the weekend with questions regarding the Mobjack Bay
Colemans. This is her response. I thought you all would like to know.
Please remember her in your prayers.

Anita, I remember corresponding with you some time back. I'm glad you're
making headway with your line. I can't help you right now because I've been
basically blind since last October and the recovery of my eyesight has been a
very slow process. I still can't read anything other than big words on the
computer screen, and I've only been able to do that for a couple of weeks. I
had to ask my husband to read me your message because I couldn't read the
type and the color made it difficult.

Going through my 1950 Bucknell Univ. yearbook, I was reminded that William
Harold Coleman was Dean. I believe he was about 60 in 1950. He and professor
Robbins co-authored "Western World Literature." Bucknell is in Lewisburg,
Union Co., PA. I'm sure I could get some details from BU if anyone is
interested. DICK COLEMAN
