Hello Barbara & All Coleman Researchers,
Thank you for the Thanksgiving Greeting from one Coleman to another. Here
is what I know about my Coleman branch thus far:
My father's father was born Theodore Wallace Coleman,
(AKA "Wally", "Ted", & "T.W.", and "T. Wallace") January 18, 1866 in New
York City. He died of tuberculosis April 12, 1933 in Port Jervis, Orange
County, New York. My father, Jacob Theodore Coleman, was just 12 at the
time.
According to my grandfather's obituary and death certificate, his parents
names were Theodore R. Coleman and Sarah Ann Palmer. The earliest I can
find the family is in 1870 census as follows:
44th District, 19th Ward - County of NY - State of NY -
Enumerated 15 June 1870 - P.O. Station K, Yorkville, NY - line 24 - house
56 - family 56:
Coleman, Theodore - 44 - M - W - Carriage Maker - birth place NY
- Sarah - 28 - F - W - Keeping House - birth place NY
- Charles - 8 - M - W - birth place NY
- Theodore - 5 - M - W - birthplace NY
- Carrie - 2 - F - W - birthplace NY
Between 1870 - 1880 many changes took place, but I don't know in which
order:
1. Two more sons are born, R. William & Walter
2. Theodore R. Coleman either died or disappears
3. Family moved to Port Jervis, Orange County, NY
- Port Jervis 1880 Census has Sarah listed as a "widow"
and the children, except Charles, are livng with her. My grandfather is
listed by his middle nickname "Wally" in that census. The family is also
listed in the Port Jervis City Directories from the years1880 - 1889 living
in the same households. My grandfather is consistanly listed in Port Jervis
City Directories from 1891 - 1926, but his brothers come and go - sister
Carrie is not found after 1889 - she must have married and moved away.
Also I can't find Sarah Palmer-Coleman after 1889, she either died,
re-married, or moved away. By the time my grandfather died in 1933 - there
are only 2 siblings listed as survivors: a sister Carrie Montbano, and a
brother William of Los Angeles, CA. No location was listed for Carrie so I
don't know where she lived. I think Carrie's married surname may have been
spelled wrong in the obituary, don't know for sure. I have never been able
to find anything out about my grandfather' surviving siblings.
Well, that is it. Anyone researching COLEMAN's who lived in New York City
from the 1840's to the present who think they may be linked, please contact
me.
Happy Holidays everyone!

Could the person that started the Coleman mailing list please tell me how to
go about starting one? I have another family name that apparently there has
never been a list for and I would like to start one.
Gratefully appreciated,

My great grandfather is John Coleman and he died in New York City in
October 1880, aledged to be 46 years of age. In the 1855 NYC Census he
lists the date of his arrival at 1853, age 24. Naturally, I don't know
where he is from, but there is a suggestion in my father's papers that
he was from Cork. This info places his birth about 1831-34. I believe
his census age was fudged because my great grandmother did not want him
to appear older than she.
At the time of his death he lived in Williamsburg, Brooklyn NY and was a
leather worker.
The couple had children Mary, Daniel, Michel Francis, Bridget (Delia),
Margaret Anne, Catherine, Johanna Elizabeth, Harry, and John.
I have found a Michel Coleman who is around the same age as John who
came into the city and lived in the same areas as my John, but of
course, these names were relatively common.
What I am hoping to find is some family historian that heard about an
"Uncle" or "Cousin" John who had a family that sounded like this one.
Happy Thanksgiving

Dear Cousin Nancy,
How very nice of you to take your time this morning to wish each of us on all
of your groups a Happy Thanksgiving. Since I am in the south, away from the
cold and unfortunately, my family, your wish for me to have a good day was
most meaningful. It was kind of you to do the same for all of your lists.
I just want you to know that I have not made many connections to my
genealogical lines either; but, I plow onward because the true value of these forums, I
have decided, is not in the data, although it makes wonderful frosting on
the cake, but the friends we find and link to during our searchers. Some of the
finest people I have met in my life have made their appearance on these
family sites.
So, without intending to do so most probably, you have done a tremendous job
of spreading the good word, the family closeness both known and unknown, and
the true meaning of this special holiday for our founding fathers. They were
thankful that God had seen them safely to the new land, He had allowed a
nucleus to live through the hardships of the preceding year, and the crops had been
plentiful so they were assured of enough to eat that next year. May we all
keep in mind how fortunate we are to be a part of this great country of the
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. May God continue to bless us and keep us in His hands
as we say a special prayer for those who are sacrificing their time on this
special day in foreign places so that we have the freedom to do what we do.
Thank you for your good wishes, Nancy. Keep up the good work. You are a
good American and I am proud to call you my cousin, even though the blood in our
veins may not support that statement.

Hello to All My Lists,
I would like to wish each and everyone a Happy Thanksgiving Day.
So far I haven't seen anything where I can connect to anyone but I keep watching and reading.
I don't have a lot of info on my Nivens, Fisher families to go on. Ritter's aren't related by blood they adopted my Great Aunt Flora when she was about 2 or 3 yrs. old. She married William (Willie) Andrew Hudson. William was a brother to my Grandpa David Elmer Hudson.

Is there anyone researching Marcellas (or Marcellus) Coleman who was born
in 1842 Meigs, Ohio. He married Mary Jane Hawley born 1830, Meigs,
Ohio? They are my g-g-grandparents. Thank you for reading this.

Some information I have on Anderson Coleman is that he may have lived in the Wayne-Lesterville TN area.
Dau Martha Jane Coleman b 1854 in TN married John Reed b abt 1848 MO. They were married in 1880 (approx), and on the 1880 Census he is recorded as living in the Wayne-Lesterville TN area.
Thanks, Barbara
I'm new to List, am looking for Anderson Coleman b abt 1820s, moved to Shannon Co, MO. The only family member I know of is a daughter Martha Jane b 1854 who married John Reed b 1848
Shannon Co, MO. She had two brothers, not sure about other siblings.
Thanks to anyone who has any information on this family.

I recently discovered that members of my Coleman family applied for
membership in the Choctaw tribe in 1902. Their request for membership was
rejected for lack of evidence. Reading the Dawes Commission information has
created some confusion for me. I had come to accept information that came
to me from several researchers that my gggg-grandfather, David Coleman, of
Wilkes County, NC had married Elvira Hendricks who was the daughter of
Benjamin and Eve Hendricks who lived in the same area. In fact David and
Elvira name one of their sons Enos which is the name of Eve's grandson in
Genesis. In the interviews of the Dawes Commission one of David and
Elvira's grandsons along with numerous other Colemans said that Elvira's
father was Jim Hendricks of Mississippi. They presented a letter from an
elderly man in Mississippi stating that he new Jim Hendricks in Mississippi.
One researcher had mentioned that when David Coleman left North Carolina in
about 1837 he traveled through South Carolina and Mississippi before
settling in Hickman County, TN.
I am hoping that someone on the list might have some information about this
Hendricks family.
