Hello members.
Just wanted to let you know that I have had a major break thru with my
Colemans.
I have known that my gr. great grandfather's name was John J. Coleman. Last
night, however, I discovered that his father was Benjamin Whitehead Coleman
and his mother, Mary Coleman.
I know a little information on the parents of Benjamin, but I don't have
anything on Mary. Do any of you have her in your line?
Anita
This may be your Robert Coleman:
1880 US Census - LDS site - Family Search
R.R. Coleman b. 1830 NY age 50 farmer parents: father born Mass.,
Mother born New York
Household:
Julia N. (not M - but that could be error) b. 1845 NY age 35 parents born NY
dau - Mary B. b. 1861 New York - age 19 Parents born New York
son - William b. 1868 New York - age 12 parents born New York
Other: F. Hutchings b. 1860 OH age 20 - farm laborer
Almira Wilmouth - age 12 servant-girl
If this is the family you seek: Robert Coleman and Julia M. Coffin - it
would be a great idea to search the infor in Labette County, KS - never know
what will turn up - put a query there anyway!
I tried to find Mary B. Coleman, daughter - but nothing came up - 1861 was
start of Civil War and documents may have burned or something -
But this might be a clue for you or for someone else -

I just checked the Columbia County (NY) Message Board on USGENWEB site (New
York State listing, Columbia County selected)
The following information was given:
Julia M. Coffin - and Robert R. Coleman (son of Benjamin and Sarah Coleman)
were married 22 Dec 1864 in the home of John Coffin - 53 people as witnesses
- Quaker tradition
More info: John Coffin b. @ 1808 died after 1874 - married Clarissa Finch
was of Chatham, Columbia County, NY
other children known:
Eliza F. b. 16 Dec 1830 married John Janney -
she died in 1907 age 76 and is buried Loudon County, VA
Apparently the Coffin family were Quakers - so you might find out more on
the various Quaker sites...
Hope this helps

I checked a man by the same name: William Coffin Coleman who was the founder
of the Coleman lantern company in Wichita, Kansas I couldn't find a
birthday but he died 2 Nov. 1957. The article (used www.google.com
"advanced search" -) said that he began the business in 1900 and that he had
a grandson Sheldon who received the Kansas Business Hall of Fame award for
him.
The 1910 Sedgwick County, KS US Census has the following:
W.C. Coleman - born NY - wife Anna S b. Kansas (S=Sheldon?)
son Robert S. and son Clarence W.
Also i found it listed on the LDS site as follows:
Robert Russell Coelman and Julia M. Coffin (sometimes spelled I think
Coffon?)
son: Wiliam Coffin Coleman b. 21 May 1870 Chatham, Columbia, NY
I looked through the 1880 US Census but didn't come up with anything
interesting that looked good except:
Julia M. Coffin age 37 b. 1843 b. IL - sister to Horace Coffin b. IL -
parents b. NY
Since you didn't say when Robert russell and Julia married - there isn't
much we can check on there - I didn't find that anyplace else -
But with the exact same name, I would say that William Coffin Coleman who
invented the Coleman lantern and with the NY parents - might be your man -
how about that! If it were the same man born in 1870 then he would have
been 87 at death - a possibility!
You can send for the obituary for William Coffin Coleman who died in 1957 :
Midwest Historical and Genealogical Society - Wichita, Kansas - send SASE
and $3.00 - The ob it was from newspaper Wichita Eagle and Beacon....don't
if that means two newspapers or one with long name - the site wasn't clear
about that -
You might also check in at USGENWEB for for New York State, Columbia County,
and Chatham (city) to see if a "query" there might produce results - or if
the local library might have something -
Hope you find your Robert Russell Coleman quickly!

Anyone know Robert's birth info? Parents, birthplace, etc? Or Julia's?
I have heard Robert and Julia were both born on Nantucket. If so, was Robert descended from Thomas Coleman, b. 1602, one of the first settlers of Nantucket?

Hi Susan,
Most of my Coleman info comes from a dear "cousin" in TN. If you would like
I'll give you her address and telephone number. She has a lot of info on the
Coleman's in and around Blountville. This is the info I could gather from my
files quickly:

married Susan Royston, children:
William T., b. 17 Jul 1836, d. 26 Oct. 1901

Rebecca D., b. 1848
Nancy J., b. 1832
Mary M., b. 8 Aug 185?, d. 6 Jun 1921
David, b. 1859
I have a copy from "PAST NEWS - THE BRISTOL COURIER, Bristol, TN."
(HPF23-16), dated 16 Feb 1872, with a paragraph about John Coleman, age abt.
60 hanging himself.
The above Mary M. Coleman married John Tallman, this is my Tallman line.
Hope this helps...

There were no Colemans listed in TN in the 1820 US Census (doesn't mean they
weren't there)

Seeking information on the above Lois Amelia Coleman, born Shiawasee Cnty,
Michigan..mother born Kentucky, father born New York. Lois Amelia has also
been seen as Louisa Coleman. She entered the Masonic Home for Widows and
orphans upon the death of her second husband, Reverand John S. Jackson of
Allen, Oklahoma. She died there of asthma in 1915. The folklore states that
she was dissowned by her parents as a young woman due to a disagreement over
slave owning, and her new minister husband. It is said that as a child she
lived in Virginia or West Virginia.
First married James Brumfield of Calloway Co, Missouri. Children were:
Emma Brumfield b Nov. 16, 1876 married ? Tipton.
William Brumfield b 1879
Minnie Brumfield b April, 1881 died of cancer in Okla.
James Claude Brumfield b 1883 (lived and possibly died Phoenix, Arizona).
Married second, probably about 1890 to a minister named John S. Jackson,
likely Missouri. John S. Jackson was born in Iowa. Children were:
Lemuel Jackson b 3-3-1892 died 7-22-1945 in Mental Hospital in Vinita, Okla.
Hattie Bell Jackson b 12/13/1893 died 3-21-1958, married Lewis and Cameron,
is buried in Henryetta, Okla.
Hildred Jackson b 1895 lived in Masonic Home for Widows and Orphans, died
1910 of typhoid.
Theodore Roosevelt Jackson b 1900, was in the Navy and was in Southgate,
California in 1958.
If anyone has these names in their history, please respond. Thank you, Sunny

Mother born New York

Do you recognize any of these names as being uncles or aunts?

My mother was 8 years old when her parents (Anna COLEMAN &Charles
WOODROW died). We were told that Anna was brought to the states at a
very young age by a Doctor and mrs Huggs. I think her parents drowned
over in England. Melva
