Hi all,
I received the following from Melva with a little more information.
Please read to see if you can be of help. My Coleman line is in
Virginia, which puts me a long way from New Jersey. Melva's e-mail
address is MPres345(a)webtv.net .
Thank you all,
Sharon
If I had some of these answers it would be easy for me to go farther,
but since I only have a little bit of info. its hard.
ANNA COLEMAN B. 1873
According to marriage license her mother was ELIZA DORLAND, her father
was HARRISON COLEMAN both from NJ. There is no HARRISON COLEMAN in the
census not state or federal. I have a lot of help through the
Rootsweb and maybe they are right. So far I don't have any proof of all
this. All I know is that my Grandmother is ANNA COLEMAN. Do I have a
Irish or English backgroung? Is HARRISON COLEMAN on her marriage
license the truth or was I taken by someone who looked it up for me and
sent me the copy of it.
Melva,
It would help all of us who are researching the Coleman surname to have a
few more specifics. This includes state, county - if you have it,
specific names of your ancesters. Without this information we cannot be
of help to you.
Thanks, Sharon
Hi Melva,
I have a signed photo of
Alderman Henry George COLEMAN
Mayor of Islington 1921-2
with chains of office, who is probably related by way of EVANS, or ACASON
surname.
You are welcome to a copy of the photo if you wish.
This is all the information I have on him at the moment and any help
whatsoever regarding him, would be greatly appreciated.
Willing to try and help with any Devon COLEMAN's, just let me know.

Can anyone please tell me who these folks are?
Feb. 15, 1877 -- Methodist Church, Ridgeway, S. C.
Mamie Cason married A. L. Porter. It was a double ceremony, and James A.
Kennedy marrying Minnie Coleman.
Since it was a double ceremony I assume they were relatives, or at least,
very close friends.
Can anyone please give me a clue to the identities of each of the above??

Hello All,
I found James' Brother & sisters on the 1880 Davidson county census 4 yrs before his birth & it shows his father to be John H. age 32 & mother I think it is Exeline .. What I'm confused about is that it shows 2 women living with them a Mary and Martha Roberson age 80 & 50 to be John's mother & sister...????? Did John die & his sister & mother marry Roberson's after James was born???
Does this sound familiar to anyone?
I do know that James older brother Will H. married a Ella Roberson also & one of Will's daughters (Anna) married Bryant Gray or Grey their on Will's 1920 census for Davidson Co., Tn.
Thanks, Janice Pierce Scott, Pulaski, Tn.
Thanks, Wes, for directing me to your on-line-book. I have started reading it with pleasure. Congratulations on a job well done.
I am trying to place my third great grandmother, Alyce Coleman who married William Killion in Orange Co., NC on 7 April 1810. They moved a few years later to Claiborne County, TN. Also moving to Claiborne County was Thomas Coleman who married Betty McClary on 24 Sept 1806 in Orange CO. I cannot prove a relationship between them but one would guess at a kinship.
Other Orange County marriages were:
John Coleman who married Mary Riley on 17 Jan. 1785
John Coleman married Rebecca Allen on 12 Nov. 1803
Levi Coleman married Jean Reddick on 16 Nov. 1782
As Wes noted Samule Coleman was bondsman on the Coleman=Reddick marriage.
Thanks

The outlaw, Cole Younger was b. 1844 d. 1916 and his middle name was
COLEMAN. My cousin said he had heard that Cole's Mother was a Coleman
and some Coleman's were mixed up some how with Jesse James and the
Younger brothers. Has anyone on the list heard of such stories? Peace.

Bev,
Did you notice the bondsman for that marriage is listed as Samuel Coleman?
I've long wondered if that Samuel is the Samuel Coleman in my group
descended from Robert Coleman of Nansemond County Virginia.
In my book online, Chapter 8 on Samuel Coleman of Lenoir County North
Carolina and Craven County South Carolina makes mention of the marriage of
Levy to Jean Reddick stating:
A Samuel Coleman is also listed in a marriage in Orange County NC of Levy
Coleman to Jean Reddick dated 16 Nov. 1782
The Samuel Coleman in my group I estimated to have been born about 1702
probably in Edgecombe County, NC to William "Wiley" Coleman and his wife
Jane. William I estimate to have been born about 1678 and died in 1752
leaving a will in Edgecombe County, NC. William may have been born in
Nansemond County Virginia. His father was Robert Coleman, I of Nansemond
County Virginia who first patented land there in 1684 and who was listed as
owning 1400 in the quit rent rolls of 1704. Robert Coleman, I may have been
born as late as 1650, but could have been born earlier.

I am in search for a Coleman family In VA 1770 time span. I feel certain this family was in VA for at less one maybe two generations before Jordan Coleman was b. abt 1700- 1780. My verbal history I have gleamed from my older family have said the family was in the coal mines of Wales, time I don't know guessing 1680-1750. I don't know Wales history. Some of this family moved west to TN by 1809, Jordan was married 1809 in Rutherford CO TN. I think there were 3 sons or more family that moved to TN, we find 3 different men that are cousins: Jordan , his brother Jesse b. 1780's and a J. M. H. b. 1815 that was a cousin/nephew. Does anyone know about Blackman Coleman in Rutherford CO in this same time span. Several mentions of him are readily found in county records. Also looking for a Coleman man that had an initial O in his name b. about 1800 TN. AM
I'm searching for Harrison Coleman born abt 1822 married a Eliza Dorland
1844. My grandmother was born 1873 in New Jersey. I cannot find this
family in NJ at all. Can anyone help with this man. Thank you. Melva

If you don't put Robert Coleman in the subject space, when someone researches
the archives for him, they will not find your reply !
All it takes is a few seconds.

This is interesting because my ROBERT COLEMAN's children which I have
listed were: DAVID, CHARLES, JAMES S. JOHN, JANE ANN, and ROBERT. Do you
know if any of your ancestors moved on to Canada? They could still be
related even if they didn't. Rose Mary

RE: ROBERT COLEMAN
There has been lots of info re a ROBERT COLEMAN. I have a ROBERT
COLEMAN too but different from the one you have been discussing. Just
thought someone out there might be related to mine.
My ROBERT COLEMAN was born in Ireland in 1787. His son was DAVID
COLEMAN born 1813-16. They first came to the U.S. and then went on to
Ontario, Canada because the U.S. was unfavorable to loyalists at that time.
I would love to know where in the U.S. they settled and how long they
were in U.S. I know they were in the U.S. at least ten years and perhaps a
lot longer. Does the above family ring a bell with anyone? I am happy to
share info. Rose Mary
Dee,
Thanks for the offer. Since sending the message to COLEMAN-L and to a
second list, that for Northampton County, NC, I have learned from
respondents there were no wills in the county records as far as what we have
recorded in a book:
"Northampton County North Carolina 1759-1808
Genealogical Abstracts of Wills"
by Margaret M. Hofmann
So, apparently he did not leave a will or estate settlement or his estate
was settled elsewhere. The reason for thinking he died there was that
Robert Hook has a World Family Tree entry that shows this fact taken from a
book,
"Roster of Revolutionary Soldiers and Patriots in Alabama"
by Louise Milam Julich and the
Daughters of the American Revolution.
So, I'm wondering what deeds may exist for the area and the period,
Northampton County, NC, pre 1767.

I want to thank eveyone that has helped me. Even though I have yet to
find Harrison Coleman in anything. I am not giving up . I'm starting
to go through all the states one by one. I looked through all the
census and he doesn't seem to be in any. I know he was born in 1822,he
got married in 1844 and had atleast one child in 1873. Other than that
nothing. This is not enough, so hold on states here I come!!!!!!.
Thanks again to all and God Bless. Melva
Does anyone have access to a book of will transcripts for Northampton County
for a period that included 1767?
Does anyone have a transcript or image of the will for Robert Coleman who
died 1767 in Northampton County, North Carolina.
>From J.P. Coleman's book, The Robert Coleman Family From Virginia to Texas
1652-1965, published by the author in 1965, the author recorded on pages
436-439 the earliest ancestor of a line of Colemans in Greene County, AL
from 1823 to 1960s that are supposedly descendants of Robert Coleman who
first patented land in 1684 in Nansemond County, Virginia.
I am trying to work backwards from there and have been told Charles Coleman
was the son of a Robert Coleman who died in Northampton County, NC in 1767.
I would like to find the will of Robert Coleman who died in 1767 in
Northampton County, NC to see whether it lists a Charles Coleman and whether
it deeds any lands to Charles that might be useful for making family
connections.
J. P. Coleman's book tells me this much about Charles, the alleged son of
Robert Coleman who died in 1767.
J.P. connects this Charles Coleman to a wife, Mary Roundtree:
Charles Coleman, b. 1744 Edgecombe County, NC,
fought in the American Revolution as Quartermaster of the
3rd N. C. Regiment. He married Mary Rountree and died in 1824,
being buried at Grassdale in sight of the Coleman-Bank house said
to be the oldest frame house in Greene County. Five generations of
Colemans are buried at Grassdale.
settled in Greene County, AL where he brought his two sons:
1. John Coleman, settled in Greene County
2. Wiley (a.k.a. William?) Coleman, Settled in Bibb County
The Daughters of the American Revolution Lineage Book 96 further tells a bit
of this Charles Coleman:
"MRS. ALICE COLEMAN McDOWELL. 95982
Born in Hale County, Ala.
Wife of E. B. McDowell.
Descendant of Charles Coleman, as follows:
1. Harvey Coleman (1848-1910) m. 1st 1868 Emma Allen (1851-75)
2. James Cobb Coleman (1810-68) m. 2nd 1836 Juliet Bestor (1811-59)
3. John Coleman (1781-1852) m. 1807 Rhoda Cobb (1793-1863)
4. Charles Coleman m. 1765 Mary Roundtree (1750-1821)
"Charles Coleman (1744-1824) served as quartermaster in the third
North Carolina regiment. He was born in Edgecomb[e] County, NC;
died in Green County, Ala.
Also No. 40171."
Another mention of the couple appears in military records for
Revolutionary War veterans as recorded in the book entitled
"The Coleman Family" by the American Genealogical Research Institute.
In the book a list of veterans includes:
Charles Coleman b.1750-55 in NC unit m.Mary Roundtree
Finally, the last piece of evidence is found in the deeds of Edgecombe
County North Carolina where we find these items:
In Deed Book 13, on page 135, we find Elizabeth(a.k.a. Mary?) Roundtree of
Wayne County, N.C.
deed to Charles Coleman reserving to herself a life-time interest in the
land,
15 Apr 1809. [Watson, p. 83]
In Deed Book 17, on page 12, we find Charles Coleman of Cahawba, AL
sold land granted to him on 09 Mar 1760. Doc date 30 Jun 1819.
In Deed Book 21, on page 86, we find Charles Coleman was son of
Robert Coleman, deceased, whose father was
Robert Coleman, deceased. doc date 11 Nov 1833. [Watson, p. 219]
So, it is apparent the last deed above, this line may include another Robert
Coleman who was father of the Robert Coleman who died in 1767 in Northampton
County, NC. However, just which Robert Colemans these were and whether they
were connected to the Colemans of Edgecombe County, NC (and hence, to those
of Nansemond County, Virginia), is problematic.
Any additional information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
