Coleman RootsWeb 29 Jan 2002
About 2 months ago I posted to this list concerning an ancestor, Samuel
Coleman, born 28 Dec 1831 in SC, ran away from home when a young man after
being disciplined by his father, and in 1860 m. in Coryell Co., TX and then
served in the Civil War from Texas.
Samuel told his children that his parents were Robert and Sally (Moore)
Coleman who owned a large plantation in SC; that his siblings were David,
Thomas, John, Jefferson, Belzoria, Jeanette, and Jane (m. Frank Austin).
After hearing from several active Coleman researchers and noting the large
number of Colemans in SC in the early to mid 1800s, I decided my first step
should be to identify the family of interest in a SC census and then branch
out from there.
Actually there are only a few Robert Colemans in the 1800 census. From place
names mentioned by Samuel Coleman's family, I decided the Robert of interest
to us was in Laurens Co., SC. Most promising entries were:
Robert Coleman 1830 Laurens Co., SC (300001-12101)
(Father 30-40 hence b. 1790-1800)
Robert Coleman 1840 Laurens Co., SC (2111001-1011001).
(Father 40-50 hence b. 1790-1800)
(Son b. 1830-1835 is of right age to be Samuel b. 1831.)
There was a Robert Coleman in 1850 and 1860 Laurens, but he appears to be a
totally different person from the Robert in 18310/1840:
1850: Father b. 1814/5 ("ditcher" by profession); wife Mary b. 1816/7;
Elizabeth b. 1835/6; James 1837/8; Eugenia b. 1839/40 ... This appears to be
a different family than that of Robert Coleman in 1830/1840, and the trail
for finding Samuel's Robert Coleman family after 1840 grows cold.
1860: Father b. 1811/12 with new wife, Nancy b. 1828/9, but the older
children are compatible with those in the 1850 census.
Does any one have any ideas on the following:
(1) Where was the Robert Coleman of 1830/40 Laurens (the one of interest to
me) in 1850? The only other Robert in 1850 SC was in Chester Co. - very likely
the same one who was in Chester C. in 1840.
(2) Where was the Robert Coleman in 1850/60 in 1840? He had 2 or 3 children
born by 1840. The only other Robert in 1840 SC was in Chester Co.
Any add'l ideas or recommendations for further research would also be
appreciated.
Theron Smith.

Hello Coleman researchers!
Is anyone working on Coleman in Simpson County, Mississippi? Beulah Octavia
Coleman married Johnny Lewis somewhere around 1900. Can anyone help me with
this?

A MAN DEVOURED BY GRIZZLIES
Portions of the skeleton of a young man named Robert Coleman, who left
French Camp about six weeks since, on a hunting expedition, was discovered
on Tuesday last, by Indians in the lair of some grizzlies. Information of
the circumstance was given to Mr. J. L. Hunt, of Fresno, who immediately
repaired to the spot, and had the remains decently interred. The gun of the
unfortunate man was found near by gnawed and broken. Mr. Coleman came
from Alabama to this country, about two years ago, and was a person
generally
liked and esteemed by all who knew him. His untimely demise was evidently the
result of an unexpected encounter with one or more grizzlies.

I'm working on an article for my current Coleman book regarding the
pronunciation of Virginia names. If you know of any names that are spelled
one way but pronounced differently, please let me know. And please include
your name and where you live, for the source note. For instance, Jane or
John Doe of Anytown, TX. Thank you!

I am looking for information on my Grandfather, James Coleman, his wife Winifred and his siblings, Kate, John, Michael, Bessie, Patrick, and questionably Peter, Norah and Anna. He was born in Ireland probably Ballaghadereen around 1878 and came to Brooklyn, NY around 1900. He was naturalized in 1909 and worked in the construction field as a laborer. The siblings above I just discovered in the last month after receiving baptism records for his children from a RC church in Brooklyn. He lived on Hicks St, Atlantic Ave and 47th St while in US. I've been looking for years and just recieved my first clues last month in that there were siblings so I feel there must be cousins and other family out there and my siblings and myself are not the end of this line so to speak. James' parents were James Coleman and Mary Carney and I don't know if they ever came to US or stayed in Ballaghadereen. Any help, clues would be so appreciated. Thanks Virginia

Yes, and as you found they were in Stephentown in 1820 and in Onieda NY in
1830.
Thursa would have been over 20. Was she Married? I would guess that Royal
moved after she was married else she would have gone with them. Or she
could have stayed with family if she had a job. Stephentown was the 10th
largest town in the USA in 1810. Lots of jobs I guess. Now the only jobs
are working for the Government at some level.

Trying to find out anything on Royal Coleman, son of John Coleman and Martha
Hasey. I have no birthdate, although from family manuscript, I suspect it
must have been between 1772 and 1775. Married Dolly Godfrey, had children
Thursa, Leafa, Angeline, and Royal, Jr. I believe this family lived in the
Stephentown area of Rensselaer County. I have a newpaper copy listing the
death of a Royal Coleman in Norway, Herkimer County as Jan 8, 1888 at 77
years. This must be Royal Jr.
Thursa married James Nichols, died in Stephentown in July 1867.
Angeline married Leonard Knowlton.
Thanks,

Listers,
The Forsyth County, Georgia, 1840 Census lists the following Colemans:
Abner, Hosea, Phillip, Pleasant, Valentine, and William A. The last
one, William A. Coleman is my ancestor. The Georgia Archives has a list
of white men who were employed among the Cherokees in 1811. Moses
Parris, a Cherokee, employed a Richard Coleman and Abner Coleman. Moses
Parris's niece married my ancestor, William A. Coleman. I feel some of
these men are connected somehow, but don't know how. William A. Coleman
was born ca. 1806, maybe in England, maybe not, and emigrated from
Georgia to Indian Territory (Oklahoma) by 1848-1850. Can anyone shed
any light on the above? Thank you, Beverly
