I too am interested in the origin of a Coleman line from Wales.
Former governor of Mississippi, J. P. Coleman state in his book,
"The Robert Coleman Family From Virginia to Texas 1652 - 1965"
that the Coleman line, his and mine, came from Wales. On page 15
he makes these remarks:
Now that, so far as able, I have collected the history of the
Coleman family all the way back to Wales, and reduced it to written
form, I leave it to my son, Thomas Allen Coleman, recent law school
graduate, to see what he can someday learn and write about the
family in Wales.
He quotes from the diary of Jennie I. Coleman on page 35 of his book:
They came from Wales to Virginia. I do not know how long ago.
They moved into North Carolina, Halifax County, from which they came
to this neighborhood in 1775. There was a large family of them, but I
know of only three brothers, Robert, William, and Charles. They soon
acquired large tracts of land. Robert, I imagine, was the eldest,
and he bought up land that had been granted by King George in 1772 to
William Mazyck, also to Joseph Verree, and John Winn, on the
headwaters of Beaver Creek. He settled on uncleared land in a quarter
of a mile of this home, and lived and died within a mile of the first
settlement. He must have had money to have so soon acquired the large
area around him. He must have been a man of strong character, and
industrious, thrifty habits. His descendants generally have these
characteristics, preferring a plain style of living, abhorring show
of any kind.
and later he gives the children of Robert:
Robert Coleman married Elizabeth Roe. Their children:
David Roe, 1st son, born in Halifax County, North Carolina, May
19, 1765.
John Roe, 2nd son, born in Halifax County, North Carolina, April
2, 1768.
Robert Roe, 3rd son, born in Halifax County, North Carolina,
February 1, 1769.
Wiley Roe, 4th son, born in Halifax County, North Carolina,
October 27, 1771.
Allen Roe, 5th son, born in Halifax County, North Carolina,
November 7, 1773.
Griffen Roe, 6th son, born in Fairfield County, South Carolina,
May 20, 1775
William Roe, 7th son, born in Fairfield County, South Carolina,
March 6, 1776.
Sarah Roe, 1st daughter, born in Fairfield County, South Carolina,
November 8, 1778.
Elizabeth Roe, 2nd daughter, born in Fairfield County, South
Carolina, September 8, 1780.
Solomon Roe, 8th son, born in Fairfield County, South Carolina,
October 29, 1783.
- 36 -
THE ROBERT COLEMAN FAMILY
Francis Roe, 9th son, born in Fairfield County, South Carolina,
July 12, 1786.
Zerebable Roe, 10th son, born in Fairfield County, South
Carolina, November 28, 1789.
Henry Jonathan Roe, 11th son, born in Fairfield County, South
Carolina, June 22,1793.
Ancil Roe, 12th son, born in Fairfield County, South Carolina,
April 22, 1796.
Of this large family, three died infants. John, Griffen, William,
Francis, and the two sisters went West, first to Greene County, Ala-
bama. I know nothing at all about their descendants, except that they
went on to Mississippi and Texas. David, Robert, Wiley, Allen, Solo-
mon and Henry Jonathan lived and died near by, all marrying and
rearing rather large families.
Elsewhere he gives more from descendants of the Greene County
Alabama Colemans and states they trace their heritage back to Robert
Coleman of Nansemond County Virginia, who first acquired land in
1684. It appears this was an earlier generation than the Robert
Coleman who fathered the family listed above. In fact, I made a
study of the wills of Colemans of Edgecombe County, North
Carolina and learned that the majority of those in Halifax County
North Carolina (which formed from the northern portion of
Edgecombe in 1758) had actually come from Nansemond County,
Virginia. The question of the origin of Robert Coleman of
Nansemond County, Virginia remains a mystery. What is
needed is some sort of letters from Robert Coleman of Nansemond
County, Virginia back to family in Wales, where ever they
may have been, to make the tie back overseas. It has been
suggested that Robert Coleman of Nansemond County, VA
may be the same as one Robert Coleman who was brought
to Virginia by Robert Coleman of Isle of Wight County, VA.
Papers from either of these men that would show the business
arrangements of the family to work out passage for the trip
to colonial Virginia could also reveal the connection. However,
no such papers have been discovered or discussed and I would
not know where to begin to look for them.

Hi List,
Can you please tell me if anyone is researching COLEMAN on this side of the
water? I have been watching and seem to see only US Colemans.
My COLEMAN family are from the Neilston, Glasgow, Scotland area. At the
moment I am with them in the middle 1800's.
Does this ring any bells with other Coleman researchers? The IGI has been a
good source and I have had trips to Register House too, but some other
contacts would be interesting.

The other day I wrote a note asking for identification of a Jacob Feaster in
Fairfield County.
Feaster is mentioned in a book by Elizabeth Boatwright Coker published in
1959 --- "La Belle". It is the story of Marie Boozer, a notorious woman of
the mid to late 1800's. Although the book is a fictionalized account, the
characters are real. The book is set in Columbia, Newberry, Greenville and
later on in New York and Europe.
As I have progressed through the book I have learned this so far:
(1) Marie was the dau. of Amelia Sees Harned Burton Boozer Feaster. Amelia
came to SC from Philadelphia, was married twice, the 2nd husband (Peter
Burton) probably being the father of Marie (who was born ca 1846).
(2) Amelia married (third) David Boozer of Newberry who adopted Marie. It is
hinted that Amelia murdered Boozer.
(3) Amelia and young Marie moved to Columbia where she met Jacob Feaster of
Fairfield County. He was described as a "healthy, young gentleman of
property and fine family." They moved to Alston and on to Greenville, where
she bore him two children, a daughter and a son, Evie (Eveline) and Jay.
After the birth of the son, the family, which had strongly disapproved of
Amelia, "relented and wrote to Jacob, though it did not lessen their dislike
of his wife." Jacob's sister (unnamed) said at the time Jacob married
Amelia "in such haste", and that "you should never wed a woman whose chimney
smoke you could not see from your own back door." (Love that quote!)
(4) In Greenville Jacob managed a large warehouse. In Columbia he managed
several government storehouses. They rented a house from a Mr. Bausket on
the corner of Washington and Sumter streets.
(5) Jacob is described as a "medium-sized man with a good pair of shoulders
but a poor carriage of them. His expression was mild and his smile of an
unusual sweetness. His hair and eyes were soft and honey-colored. His nose
was straight, his lips sensitive and his chin on the tender side."
(6) Jacob Feaster left Amelia (she was a Yankee sympathizer) and moved back
to Feasterville w/son Jay ca 1864. Jacob joined the Confederate Army and
fought in Va. He survived the war but the book does not give any more data
on him.
Does anyone know who this Jacob is? Parents, etc.?

Hello Coleman researchers:
Can anyone tell me about the parentage of Charles Coleman, found in
Wilkes County NC by the early 1780s, and who died in Wilkes County NC in
1826? This Charles is said to perhaps have married a Mary Campbell,
although early NC marriage records also give a Charles Coleman marrying
a Mary Cook Sept. 17 1781 in Granville Co. NC. Sons Archibald and
Beverly Coleman moved to Hopkins/Muhlenberg Counties in western
Kentucky. Am helping with a little research for a Coleman descendant who
doesn't have a computer. Would also like to know if anyone has seen a
will on this Charles Coleman.
Appreciate any help!
Thanks,

Hello,
I am trying to find ANY information about the PARENTS or SIBLINGS of my
paternal 2nd great grandmother, Rebecca Jane DICKERSON/DICKSON, born: abt.
1827 in ?, possibly Mississippi or ??/maybe Alabama or ?? She died in abt.
1893/94. She is buried in the Goodwill Cemetery near Magee in Simpson
County, Mississippi.
She is called "Granny Jane" in the HERRINGTON/HARRINGTON family information
and while since much of the time as DICKSON her children generally recorded
the name as DICKERSON.
For some strange reason I have just been unable to unearth ANYTHING about the
parents of Rebecca Jane DICKSON/DICKERSON and I would be so very grateful for
any shred of information about them or her brothers and/or sisters or
precisely where she was born.....ANYTHING.
(I am sending this information to the various lists because of the surnames
that her descendants, mentioned in the family tree below, married into.)
Rebecca Jane DICKERSON/DICKSON was the 1st wife of Isom/Isham Daniel
HERRINGTON/HARRINGTON, born: Dec 1828 in Covington or Lawrence County,
Mississippi. His 2nd wife was Sarah E. COLEMAN.
Rebecca and Sarah's husband, my 2nd great grandfather, Isom/Isham Daniel
HERRINGTON, was buried in a cemetery called the HUSBANDS' CEMETERY. I
wondered for a long time what the significance of the name was and just last
week found out that his 2nd wife, Sarah E. COLEMAN, was descended from the
HUSBANDS surname family.

Has anyone ever heard of a LILLIE COLEMAN? She would have been my aunt.
She was probably born in OK . She would have been born about 1906. In 1910
she was living in Okfuskee, OK, (Clearview) near Okemah, OK. Thanks Rose Mary
Perhaps a little more detail from me may help.
Here is what I started with: (place names in bold underlined print)
[newspaper clipping found in family Bible] "At twelve oclock on Tuesday Lena Coleman of Cottonwood Falls and David Koegeboehn of Prairie Grove were united in marriage. The ceremony was performed by Rev Jurgeson of the Lutherian [sic] church at the home of the brides parents in the presence of a large number of relatives and friends of the bride and groom, A number from Ill[inois] came to be present at the ceremony. ... Lena is the daughter of A R Coleman and wife who have made their home on Buck Creek for a number of years. She is a well-known young lady of this county and is highly esteemed by all who know her. David Koegeboehn is an industrious young man who has a host of friends, he owns a farm at Prairie Grove and prepared a home where he will take his bride and immediately begin housekeeping. The bride and groom were the recipients of many beautiful presents. Chatty Chepel of Cottonwood played the wedding march." [This newspaper clipping is undated and the newspaper i!
s not indicated.]
Lena's father was Albert R Coleman. Her mother was Geske E Johnson/Janssen b. 1863 ILL. They were married 1883 in ILL. Hence my estimate of Lena's DOB (aft 1883) and range of possible marriage dates (1900-1920) stems from that.
My search notes:
Lena & David Koegeboehn both died in Oregon, per the Oregon State Death Index at Ancestry.com (Lena in 1937 in Washington Co. and David in 1943 in Yamhill Co.) Lena's spouse is named as David in this record.
A search at Topozone.com located a "Buck Creek" in Lake Co, OR and a "Cottonwood" (not Cottonwood Falls) in Lake Co, OR. Both designated as "town/city". Could find no "Prairie Grove" in Oregon.
The Obituary Daily Times at Rootsweb lists a Mildred Ella Davis (nee Koegeboehn) died in Beaverton OR May 13 2001 age 89. Her DOB of circa 1910 could possibly make her a child (or niece?) of "my" Koegeboehns. But the obit shows her POB as Marion KS. Back to Topozone -- there is a Cottonwood Falls in KS, but no Buck Creek or Prairie Grove. I am trying to get a copy of that obit. There is nothing yet to indicate that Mildred was actually related to my family; I am just searching possibilities so far. There are apparently a lot of Koegeboehns in Kansas.
That's all I have so far.
The mention of Al Coleman buying a barber shop is intriguing. But then, that is a relatively common name. So maybe meaningless. Same thing applies to the Rose Coleman as a teacher.
I appreciate your help! Joyce Cooper

Can someone help me identify this Feaster?
I am reading the book "La Belle" by South Carolinian Eliz. Boatwright Coker
(publ 1959).
It is the story of Marie Boozer, a notorious Southern belle of the mid to
late 1800's.
Marie's mother married Jacob Feaster of Fairfield in 1853. Her name was
Amelia Burton and Jacob was her fourth husband. (3rd hubby was David Boozer
of Newberry).
My question is, how does Jacob fit into the Feaster line?
Thanks,
Glenna

While once again, reviewing my material I noticed that in settling Thomas's
estate, I have a list of those who bought goods. I recognized most of the
names as family members or relatives. I have over looked the name Tandy
Bell. Then I realized that their oldest daughter is Frances Bell Coleman.
Could his wife be a Bell? Does anyone know bells from Putnam/Baldwin Co.
area in Ga. I can find nothing on Tandy Bell.I know there was a large
family of Bells from SC that came to Ga. Does this sound familiar to anyone.
thanks. Leslie

Hi Mary,
This is part of the Coleman research that I was doing recently. If you think
the Coleman list might be interested in this, you can send it along. I am
not really into that name as of this point, but one never knows where the
research will lead. They can either contact me or Ron for more info.

Subject: Coleman Family
Hi Ron,
(I am sending a cc of this to the CAMODOC list in case anyone else is
interested or has more info on this family.)
Thanks for contacting me. I checked the Lake Co. Marriage Records, for
1895-1920 and did not find any COLEMAN listed. I am unfamiliar with where
Buck Creek is. What county do you think they were married in? Some of the
Lake Co. people were married in Reno and other places.
The book called "Growth of Lake County, Oregon" by Georgie Ellen Boydstun
Stephenson has these Colemans. I do not know if they are yours or not.
p. 33
Under a listing for Barbers:
1901-"Frank Smith and Albert COLEMAN purchased Devine's shop in Lakeview
House and it is well equipped (spelling as it is in book). Three baths for a
dollar at Frank D. Smith's tonsorial parlors."
p. 40
Coleman Ranch
Owner, Joe Coleman. Present owner (1974) is Harry Schadler of Adel. The
ranch was started as a homestead by J.P.Coleman, and it now belongs to MC
ranch. Coleman Valley was named for J.P.Coleman. (Info given by Joe Fine,
verified by Deese McKee.)
In 1889-1990, Coleman valley was owned by Ayers and Poor. Poor refused to
buy hay in Warner valley for $5.00 a ton because he and some others wanted
to force settlers our of Warner. He bought hay in Surprise Valley for
$15.00 a ton, but weather conditions were such that he was unable to get the
hay to Coleman Valley. As a result of this, he lost about 5,000 cattle, and
soon went out of business.
p. 123
Miss Rose B. Coleman is listed as a teacher in 1st Primary Dept. of The
Public School of Lakeview which opened Sept. 18, 1899. She apparently had 54
students. That figure was underlined as if it may be questionable. The other
classes were smaller, and their was a total of 145 students. In 1906, they
graduated three 11th graders. There is a list of students who went there,
and graduated 8th grade, and who passed state exams for 8th grade diplomas,
if anyone is interested in that.

Subject: lookup, please
On the Lake Co GenWeb page your name is listed, and directly underneath is
this listing:
"The Growth of Lake County, Oregon" by Georgie Ellen Boydstun Stephenson
Lake Co. Marriage Records Vol 1,2, and 3, which covers 1875-1920
I hope you have access to these records. I am trying to locate a marriage
record for my dad's first cousin: her name was:
Lena Coleman, dau of Albert & Geske (Johnson) Coleman. Lena married a David
Koegeboehn.
Exact marr date is unknown; was probably between 1905-1920. The only record
I have is an undated newspaper clipping found in my late grandmother's
family Bible. Place was the parent's home, maybe in Buck Creek. All I know
of date is that it was a Tuesday.
(Lena was born after 1893, died in 1937, maybe in September, in Washington
Co OR. David died July 1943 in Yamhill Co OR.)
If you have anything on their marriage, it would be greatly appreciated.
Anything else on this family would be simply icing on the cake.
I would be happy to reimburse any reasonable copying and/or postage costs as
well.
Please let me know what you can find out.
God bless America!
