I need help. I locate my great great grandfather on the 1850 census for
Bedford CO, Listed are him[Joshua C.Coleman b. 1823 d. 1883], his wife Sally
[Sarah Ann Bird b. 1826 d. 1850] their 4 children and Nancy Coleman age 66
b. SC. Our verbal history includes one or two Native American wives. Nicee
was Cherokee according to information about her [Rootsweb.] Anyone have and
information about her? I have several Marshall Colemans in my family. I know
Joshua was a nephew of a Jesse Coleman. I don't think his family has been
recorded from his after or grandfather. All of records were lost in a flood
in Parker /Tarrent counties TX decades ago. I was told a cousin of my
generation had our family well she did the Boone family, I was very busy
raising 5 children and all of Joshua & Sarah grandchildren were dead by
1970. No one in my family can find Joshua's family, well I am the most
stubborn one and never tell me it can't be done. I would go to TN and record
search but can I locate Joshua's or Sarah's death certificates? A cousin of
mine on my Carlock side is searching the records at the Federal depot in FT
Worth for me and she hasn't found anything new YET. He is buried at the
Pisgah Cem. as J.C. Coleman next to his second wife Jane Floyd Bearden
Coleman [an aunt of my great grandmother Sarah Ann Boone Coleman. I know
this is long but maybe someone will see something that will be in some of
their notes.

There were Craven Cos in both NC and SC.
Craven Co., SC.is referenced in SC records of the early and mid 1700s.
Apparently when Camden District was established in 1769 along with 8 others,
Craven Co., SC was discontinued. My reference, The Handybook for
Genealogists, is not very clear on the evolution, but it definitely
identifies Craven Co. (Old Craven) as a former county in SC. Incidentally,
it was not far from Georgetown District (listed as an original district
-1769) which also may have been part of Craven Co. In sum, it appears that
your reference which cited Craven Co., SC was probably correct.
Best regards,
Hugh
In assembling the line of Colemans originating from Nansemond Co Virginia, I find one moved to Dobbs County (absorbed into Lenoir County) and two were probably planters of Craven County North Carolina. Robert Coleman of Edgecombe County bought land in Dobbs and two brothers, Samuel and Sampson, were listed as planters of Craven County SC when they sold land inherited from their father in Edgecombe County NC. I think the South Carolina is a mistake since I found no such county in South Carolina. I think they were in Craven County NC for a short while. And I find a Samuel, Sampson and Robert Coleman in Georgetown County, SC in the 1790 U.S. Census that could be the same three from Edgecombe I am interested in.
If you have information on any of these folks, I'd be interested to hear it.
Thanks.

To All of the Colemans,
I have my family back to J. C. Coleman b. 1824? at Flat Creek , Bedford CO.
TN d. 1883 same area of TN. I know his name, I know who his 2 wives were and
I know his children. I have always been told his oldest son died in the
Civil War no document just verbal history. His brother called him John and
on the 1850 census he is listed as Henry, has anyone information about a
J.H. or H.J. Coleman born about 1841 in Bedford Co TN? My Coleman great
grandfather moved to Tarrent CO in 1873 with his wife's family [Boones]
then they moved to Parker Co a year later.
Alicia

Looking for information on John E. (Everett?) COLEMAN. He is my gr.gr.
grandfather . I have found a marriage license for John E. COLEMAN and
Lydia DOUGLAS in Tatnall Co., Ga., Feb. 6, 1840. According to 1850 census
the Coleman family was in Columbia Co., Fla,. In 1860 census they were in
New River Co., Fla. Where were they in 1870 ?.
John and Lydia's daughter Elizabeth Percy (Piercy) COLEMAN married
Alexander Moses STARLING January 3, 1866 I believe in Florida since most of
the children of A. M. and Elizabeth Starling were born in Bradford Co., Fl.
John E COLEMAN and another daughter, Georgia Ann, came to Texas with
Alexander and Elizabeth COLEMAN STARLING in 1880. John E. COLEMAN died in
Cherokee Co., Tx. 9 Sept. 1885.
Would appreciate any information on the COLEMAN FAMILY.
Thanks,

The book, Edgecombe County North Carolina Marriage Records, 1760-1868
by Frances T. Ingmire, published by Iberian Publishing Co., Athens, Georgia,
records these marriages of Coleman men on page 14:
Coleman, Aaron E. Bradley, Honor 11/21/1822
Coleman, John Dancy, Rebecca 06/07/1799
Coleman, John Jordan, Sally 02/06/1826
Coleman, Jonathan Price, Keziah 01/04/1763
Coleman, Kadar Stephenson, Susannah 04/05/1764
Coleman, Robert Story, Sarah 08/13/1762
Coleman, William Hedgepeth, Agatha 11/14/1820
I am interested in matching up these men with their wives in the context of the family tree of Colemans in Edgecombe County who descend from Robert Coleman of Nansemond County Virginia. Kader and Robert I think I have matched. Could use any information on the rest.
Aaron E. who married Honor Bradley - There were two known Aarons but both were born rather early to be marrying in 1822:
Aaron #1 was born around 1732 probably in Edgecombe County to Robert Coleman, third in the line who was born in 1705 in Nansemond County VA. This Aaron is shown in his father's will along with many other siblings such as Robert (fourth in the line), Cadar (Kader), Stephen, Sarah, Josiah, Susanor, Jaconias (Jachonias), Grace, Sely, Hardy, and Zilpha.
Aaron #2 was born a generation later than #1 a son of Charles Coleman, Jr., grandson of Charles Coleman, Sr. who was a brother to the Robert Coleman, third in the line. Aaron #2 left a will dated 6 Jul 1796, probated Feb 1800 in Edgecombe County and shown in Abstracts of Wills of Edgecombe County North Carolina 1733-1856. His will lists Harde as his wife. Harde's will listed Aaron's sister, Patience (Coleman) West Dixon. Since Aaron #2 died by Feb 1800, he could not be the one who married in 1822 to Honor Bradley.
So, who was the Aaron Coleman who married Honor Bradley? Who were his parents and siblings and offspring and where did they go?
There was also a William A. Coleman, son of Spencer Coleman of Monroe County,
TN, formerly of VA (fought in Revolution in VA). He (William) was married to
a lady who was almost certainly was at least part Cherokee, and probably from
one of the more prominent Cherokee families (the Vanns). He (William) had
several children including Calvin Coleman, Lucinda Coleman, and Wm. Absolom
"Babe" Coleman. I have a list of the others if anyone is interested. These
Colemans were in the very sw corner of NC, the very se corner of TN, and the
very nw part of GA. Does that connect with anyone else? Also, I show that
Spencer had an ancestor named Robert Coleman, and according to his Rev War
pension request, Spencer was born in King and Queen County, VA (in the
Northern Neck), moved to Shenandoah County, and then down to sw VA, and after
the Rev, down to Cocke County TN and then later to Monroe County, where he
died. Does anyone connect with these Colemans?

This is summarized by me from Microfilm #1547702, from the Family History Library. The data is from Order Book 1, Monroe County, Alabama.
On page 41, date 6 Mar 1837 Osburne COLEMAN was appointed administrator of the estate of William COLEMAN deceased.. William GORDIE, Allen GORDIE and John BOGART were appointed appraisers.
On page 52, date 9 Apr 1838, a petition was made by Osburn COLEMAN for a sale of the real estate belonging to the estate of William COLEMAN deceased. The said William Coleman died leaving the following children, who are legal heirs and distributors: to wit, Osburn COLEMAN, the administrator, John L. BRYANT in right of his wife Faraby BRYANT, lately Faraby COLEMAN, Arthur W. FORT, in right of his his wife Nancy FORT, formerly Nancy COLEMAN, all of mature age----and also Osburn COLEMAN as guardian of Martha COLEMAN, a minor .
The said intestate, William Coleman deceased, died seized and possessed of the following real estate lying in Monroe County, to wit: The s/w quarter of Section 17 in Township 7 of Range 6, containing 160 acres and 34/100 of an acre, the west 1/2 of the s/e quarter of S17 in Township 7 of Range 6, containing 80 acres and 171/2 hundreth of an acre, the N/W 1/4 of S17 in Township 7 Range 6 containing in all the amount of 400 acres.
On page 53, same date the court appointed the following people as commissioners to sell the land: Allen GORDY, Samuel and Solomon B---(can't make out the last name) , William GOODY(GORDY) and John Hambleton.

Re the Coleman's recently listed in GA and their possible relationship: The
Robert Coleman family migrated from Amelia Co., VA to SC in the 1760's. I
have never been able to document that I have a complete list of their
children. However, an Abner Coleman appears in the same area (Old 96
District, in the portion now called Union Co.), which is where Robert Coleman
Sr. and his son Christopher also had land. Abner's name also appears in
several land sales which occurred after the death of Rob't Sr and his son,
Chris. Both men died intestate with Chris's son, Rob't inheriting the 2
estates as Chris's oldest son. I can't tell from the wording of the deeds
whether the other Coleman's who would have inherited had there BEEN a will
felt short-changed, or whether the young Rob't was trying to even out the
distribution of land, but at any rate the male Coleman's of the family other
than young Robert, seemed to have faded out of that area in early 1800's. I
descend from two of Chris's sisters, Lucy and Frances. Lucy's sons all went
to TN after the Rev. War.
Back in Amelia Co. VA, before the move to SC, Robert's father and possibly
his grandfather were both "William Coleman", as was a brother.
I think Abner Coleman of SC was married to a Susannah, but without "digging"
can't be absolutely sure. You might think about a further generation of this
SC family, however, as a possible source for your GA Coleman's...with a move
there after the Revolutionary War.

Listers,
The Forsyth County, Georgia, 1840 Census lists the following Colemans:
Abner, Hosea, Phillip, Pleasant, Valentine, and William A. The last
one, William A. Coleman is my ancestor. The Georgia Archives has a list
of white men who were employed among the Cherokees in 1811. Moses
Parris, a Cherokee, employed a Richard Coleman and Abner Coleman. Moses
Parris's niece married my ancestor, William A. Coleman. I feel some of
these men are connected somehow, but don't know how. William A. Coleman
was born ca. 1806, maybe in England, maybe not, and emigrated from
Georgia to Indian Territory (Oklahoma) by 1848-1850. Can anyone shed
any light on the above? Thank you, Beverly
