It is sometimes complicated to trace families when the children were raised by step parents or other family members not their original birth parents. Therefore, the notes taken from "Edgecombe County North Carolina
Abstracts of Court Minutes 1744-1746, and 1757-1794", by Marvin K. Dorman,
Copyright 1968, may be helpful to have on record in our archive.
p. 20, entry dated Wed, Apr 27 1763: Jonathan Coleman exhibited an account
of his guardianship of Aaron, orphan of Charles Coleman. This same sort of
event is recorded also in Jan 1765 and Jan 1767.
p. 60, entry dated May 5, 1784: Radford Smith, 13 year old orphan of David
Smith, deceased, is bound to Stephen Coleman.
p. 63, entry dated May 3, 1785: Aaron Coleman appointed guardian of
Bartholomew Brown, orphan of Henriette Brown, deceased.
p. 77, entry dated Feb 4, 1789: Aaron returns an account of guardianship of
B. Bunn (misspelling for Brown?)
p. 82, entry dated Feb 2, 1790 Stephen Coleman was appointed a guardian of
Sally and Mary Anne Carlile, orphans of Robert Carlile. (Was this Sarah
Coleman's husband? She married a Carlile.)
p. 87, entry dated Feb 8, 1791, Soloman Cohoon chooses Moses Coleman as his
guardian.
p. 89, entry dated May 31, 1791: Moses relinquished guardianship of Soloman
(that was a brief arrangement!)

Does anyone know the relation between William and Sarah (Ogden) Coleman and
Thomas W. Harvey (son of Thomas Harvey and Frances Bell Coleman) and Nancy
Ann Thomas?? Years ago, relatives named their children the same name, a lot
of times. These two couples named their children the same names, around the
same time. They are:
Children of William and Sarah Coleman: Children of Thomas & Nancy Harvey:
James born 1829 in Alabama..................James born before 1830 Hines Co.,
MS
William born 1934 in Alabama.................William born before 1830 Hines
Co., MS
Sirena born 1833 in Alabama...................Surena born 1838 Walker Co.,
Alabama
Sarah born 1842 in Alabama....................Sarah born after 1840
William and Sarah Coleman and their family were settled in Bienville Parish,
Louisiana by 1850. The Harveys settled there, also. The Harveys and
Alexanders traveled together.
Does anyone have the 1840 Alabama census for William and Sarah (Ogden)
Coleman? They would have had 3 sons and 1 daughter. They were in Bienville
Parish, Louisiana when the 1850 census was taken. It was misspelled Coalman.
I don't know where they lived in Alabama. He was born in 1802 in Tennessee
and she was born in 1806 in Georgia, according to the 1850 census.
My Doster research shows the following:
James DOSTER, s/o William and Quilly/Dillay Huckaby Doster, b. 1804-10
Georgia,
died by 1841, married 2-9-1832, in Hall Co, GA (Bk A, p. 698)
Lacrucia COALMAN/COLEMAN, b. ca 1814 SC, shown as d/o Abner and Martha
Coleman.
Abner Coleman was in the 1830 Hall Co, GA census ... no real proof.
Lacrucia Coleman Doster md. 2/ William COMPTON. I found a Bency Doster to
Wm. C.
Compton married Forsyth Co, GA, 23 May 1841. See Wm Compton, household #906,
1850 Chambers Co, AL.
James and Lacrucia Coleman Doster had four children:
1. Martha Jane Doster b. ca 1831 GA, md. Chambers Co, AL, license 2 Apr
1854 to
William COLEMAN.
2. Sarah E. Doster, b. ca 1834 GA, md. Chambers Co, AL, license 15 Dec 1853,
Phillip COLEMAN.
3. William A. Doster, b. ca 1835 GA
4. Lacrucia Doster, b. ca 1837 GA.

I know the books are high priced sometimes at this site, but for those of us
who are not familiar with local historical society publications, it is
sometimes the only way we can get books we would love to obtain. Using this
site, I found two out of print books on our Harman and Winningham families
which I had been searching for, without success, for many years.
Good luck -

Is anyone working on COLEMAN in Texas, between Beaumont and Hemphill? My
family left Alabama and went to Mississippi. They had settled in Bienville
Parish, Louisiana by 1850. One boy or man from this family went on into
Texas and stayed. My Coleman family was from easterm Tenn. and were part
Cherokee Indian.
Thank you!!
Is anyone researching Coleman in those Ga. Counties. I am Decended from
PATRICK COLEMAN. I do know that about 20 years ago someone wrote a book
about Colemans in that area. I can't find a copy or anyone one who will tell
me about it. I believe it was written by CLYDE COLEMAN who would have been
my great uncle. Please help. Thank you WANDA COLEMAN GIBSON
Hi all!
I've lost my connecting info from my GG=grandfather back.
Robert S. COLEMAN born abt 1822 in Campbell Co VA..lived and married in
Carroll Co VA..spouse, Amelia "Millie" Gardner.
I once had his parentage which connected him eventually to the
Spillsbee/Spilsby-Coleman line.
Any help in reconnecting would be appreciated!

Hello,
Re: TUCKER, WYNNE, BENNETT, BELL, STOKES, PARHAM, COLEMAN, JORDAN,
BAILEY/BALEY/BAYLEY, JENNINGS, EARLE, HOLBROOK, PATTISON, (CONYERS,) BENNETT,
HAILE/HALE/HAYLES, SYMONDS/SYMONS, WILLIAMS # 1, HARRIS, WILLIAMS # 2,
MORE/MOORE/MOREHEAD?, AUDLEY, PEMBERTON, SMITH, FRITH, STOKES, TILER,
(PENNER,) BILLNGTON, WALKER, MOSEBY, (GREGORY,) (PARSON,) STITH, ALMOND,
ADDIE, BRANCH/BRAUNCHE, JEFFERSON/JEAFFRESON, KELLY, PARTRIDGE,
DONIPHAN/DONOVAN, etc.
There are many various connections that I have already found between many of
my lines back in 1600's - 1700's Virginia but I think that there are more
and, perhaps, some of those might hold the keys for clearing up the mysteries
that still exist for some of the following including my 4th great
grandmother, Rachel TUCKER, and whom her parents were, etc..
I have found connections between the BELL, TUCKER, JORDAN, BAILEY, ANDERSON
family groups that I didn't previously know about and wondering whether or
not they might connect with my other family groups of JENNINGS, JORDAN, poss.
BAILEY, WILLIAMS, HARRIS, EARLE, etc. and my MYRICK, HERRINGTON, PIERCE,
JOYNER, HARRIS and other family groups that connect. However, it may not
offer the exact connections to make the truth clear but here is some of what
might help and while I am not going to mention all of them here......some of
the possible connecting points are below.
There are others of you that are looking for the same Rachel TUCKER who
married Ripley COPELAND, born: abt. 1761, who lived in Sumter Co., SC.
I have still not uncovered anything about Rachel except for that the only
Rachel's, so far, that I have found have been descendants of (Captain) Robert
TUCKER and Elizabeth PARHAM. (PARHAM's connect in other places to my family
groups.)
I also descend from Joseph TUCKER, brother of (Captain) Robert TUCKER, sons
of Elizabeth COLEMAN and Robert TUCKER, through Joseph Tudor TUCKER and
Lucretia WYNNE, (daughter of (Colonel) Robert WYNNE, (son of Thomas WYNNE and
Agnes STITH, (mother: Jane MOSEBY (GREGORY) (PARSONS,) and Martha JEFFERSON,
(daughter of Mary/Martha BRANCH, (daughter of Sarah ALMOND and Christopher
BRANCH, II, (son of Mary ADDIE and Christopher BRANCH, I,) and Thomas (1)
JEFFERSON, (son of Samuel JEFFERSON/JEAFFRESON,).
From Joseph Tudor TUCKER and Lucretia WYNNE I descend through their daughter,
Martha TUCKER who married (Captain) Benjamin BELL who is the son of John
BELL, Jr. and his wife, Hannah STOKES, (related somehow to her
daughter-in-law, Phoebe STOKES, who married John BELL, III, and Phoebe's
father, Sylvanius/Silvanius STOKES. Wondering if this connects to my other
STOKES family in the info on WILLIAMS.)
John BELL, Jr. was the son of John BELL, Sr., born: 1668 in Isle of Wight
Co., VA, and his wife, Ann BENNETT, (father: Richard BENNETT, Jr, son of
Richard BENNETT, Sr..) (Trying to find out if and how he is related to the
John BENNETT whose Phillis BENNETT I descend from through her marriage to
Samuel EARLE, II.)
Also, I descend from Rachel JORDAN, born: abt. 1750, prob. in VA, maybe in
Richmond Co., VA, (mother: is her mother a BAILEY/BALEY/BAYLEY??, father: ?
JORDAN,) (there is a William JORDAN who is mentioned in the will of her
husband's grandmother, Ann KELLY (JENNINGS,) who married John JENNINGS, Sr.,
(RS,) born: abt. 1748 in Richmond Co., VA, who was the son of
Edward Salley JENNINGS, born: 1720 in Richmond Co., VA, and his wife who was
possibly named Sarah/Saraiah MORE/MOORE, (any chance this could have been
MOREHEAD?,) and Edward Salley JENNINGS was the son of mother:
Ann KELLY, born: abt. 1696 in VA, died: 1734/1735 in Richmond Co., VA,
(mother: Amy DONIPHAN, born: abt. 1662, (mother: Amy PARTRIDGE?/RIVETT?,
(parents: ??, (there are PARTRIDGE's that married into the LAMKIN/LAMPKIN &
COX & DEMOURVILLE/DEMOUVALL families that I descend from, are they
connected?,) father: William JENNINGS, Jr., born: bet. 1695 - 1700 in VA,
(mother: Mary WILLOUGHBY, born: abt. 1670, (parents: ??,) father: William
JENNINGS, Sr., born: abt. 1668, (mother: Margaret PAYNE (JENNINGS)
(EDRINGTON,) and the parents of Margaret PAYNE (JENNINGS) (EDRINGTON) were:
(father: John PAYNE, born: abt. 1615 in England, immigrated to Old
Rappahannock, VA, mother: possibly may be ?Margrett Jennings? ROBINSON,
(father: Richard ROBINSON,) and father: John JENNINGS, born: abt. 1633 in
England, immigrated to Old Rappahannock, VA, (parents: ??,) and Amy
DONIPHAN's father: (Captain) Alexander DONIPHAN, born: abt. 1640 in
Plymouth, Devonshire, England,) and Ann KELLY's father: John KELLY, born:
abt. 1660 in VA, (mother: Penelope ?, father: Matthew KELLY, born: abt.
1640, (parents: ??,)
John JENNINGS, Sr., born: abt. 1748 in Richmond Co., VA, and his wife,
Rachel JORDAN, born: abt./aft. 1750 in ?/VA?, were the parents of my
3rd great grandfather, Bailey/Baley/Bayley JENNINGS, born: abt. 1789 in VA,
poss. Richmond Co., who married Kitty EARLE, born: bet. 1795 - 1808,
(mother: Tabitha WILLIAMS, born: 1760 in North Farnham Parish,
Richmond/Henrico Co., VA, (mother: Catherine ?, father: George WILLIAMS,

parents of George WILLIAMS were
(mother: Anne WILLIAMS, (maiden name,) born: abt. 1728, md: 05 Aug 1728,
(mother: Jane HARRIS, father: John WILLIAMS, born: (mother: Lettice ?,
father: Henry WILLIAMS, born: abt. 1665 in England, died: abt. 1703,
(mother: Mary BILLINGTON, born: ??, (parents: ??,) father: John WILLIAMS,
born: early 1600's in England, immigrated to Old Rappahannock, VA,) and the
parents of the above mentioned John WILLIAMS were:
mother: Mary SMITH, (born: ??,) and father: Roger WILLIAMS, born: ??, md:

Shadrach's father was: Roger WILLIAMS, born: 1622 in Richmond, Richmond
Co., VA, died: 1675 in Old Rappahannock, VA,
The parents of Roger WILLIAMS were: (mother: Mrs. Anne TILER (PENNER,)
born: ??, (parents: ??,) father: Sydrach WILLIAMS, born: abt. 1600 in
England, (brother of Roger WILLIAMS who was the founder of Rhode Island,) and
the parents of this Roger WILLIAMS and his brother, Sydrach WILLIAMS were:
(mother: Alice PEMBERTON, born: 18 Feb 1564 in St. Albans, Hertfordshire,
England, died: 1620 in London, England, (mother: Katherine STOKES, aft.
1520, father: Robert PEMBERTON, born: abt. 1520, died: 16 July 1578,) and
Sydrach's and Roger's father was: James WILLIAMS, born: abt. 1572 in St.

husband, Mark WILLIAMS, born: abt. 1540 in St. Alban's, Hertfordshire,

Thank you, Barbara
need any information on this Colaman line:
Thompson Coleman and Willie Ann Jordan (Jordan being a
previous marriage)
all I have is: Willie had two children when she married
Thompson; Georgia (f) and Willie (?) both carried the Jordan name.
Willie and Thompson had four children;
Joseph Webster Coleman born September 7, 1888 in
Enterprise, MS or AL, died Sept 1955 (this was my grandfather)
Steven Dameral Coleman born Sept 6, 1891, MS or Al;
died Feb 27th, 1958
Bertha not sure of birth date or death.. She married
at the age of 18 and died within a year after marriage
Elizabeth the youngest child died at the age of 8 or 9
The notes I have received from ancestors is that Willie
passed away before Thompson but both deaths and the death of Elizabeth was
prior to 1910 and the place of there deaths are Montgomery, Alabama. Have
heard they died from the black plague.
all this comes from old stores and I can not find the records to show this
line or the marriage of or births of any of these.
It is said that Joseph Webster and Steven both ran away
from home at an early age. to keep from going to Catholic School.
If this branch of the Coleman tree belongs on
your tree I have the Joseph Webster Coleman family line.

My Coleman line went from Tennessee>Georgia>Alabama>Mississippi>Louisiana.
William Coleman was born ca 1802 in Tenn. He married Sarah Ogden born 1806
in Georgia. They were settled in Bienville Parish, Louisiana, when the 1850
Census was taken. One in this family settled somewhere around BEAUMONT, TEXAS.
Hi Everybody. The supplement to "The Coleman Family of Mobjack Bay, VA" is
underway, and I wanted to let you all know. If any of you are descended
from Spencer Coleman (1752-1834), Robert Spilsbe Coleman with wife Martha
Sharpe, or the Thomas Coleman who married Elizabeth Connelly, please send me
your line to be included in the supplement.
If anyone knows Mike Coleman's e-mail address, please let me know. Since I
last corresponded with him, his address has changed. Also, Bill Coleman who
is a son of Aaron and Hope Coleman. Thank you!

Melanie, I am very interested in your Chambers Co. AL Colemans. My
g-grandmother was Susan Coleman found in household of Richard B. (Burgess?)
Coleman and his wife Levina (Hodge?) Coleman on the 1850 Chambers Co.
census. She married my g-grandfather John G. Gerald (listed as Jarrell and
living alone in 1850) in 1853. Living near Richard is Mary Martindale whose
obituary many years later says she was first married to Richard Coleman and
she was from Union Co SC. Living near them is also Abner Coleman who was on
an early (1790? I believe) census for Union Co SC. I will be eagerly
awaiting your response and will gladly share anything I've been able to
find.

TX)
*Coleman, Mary E. (Edith), married Willis Cofield, 18 Jul 1844
*Coleman, S. E., (Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie") married W. W. (Winston W. ) Gay,
6 Feb 1873
*Coleman, Vastie (Vashti), married James S. Lambert, 15 Apr 1838
I do not know these Colemans:
Coleman, Elizabeth, married James B. Cook, 20 Aug 1839
Coleman, Mariah, married E. T. M. Ross, 18 Jan 1866
Coleman, Martha J., married Wm. F. Brown, 21 Jan 1858
Coleman, Sophia J., married Nathaniel A. Grady, 3 Nov 1867
Coleman, Susan, married J. G. Gerold, 26 Oct 1852 (Your John G. Gerald
(Jarrell on 1850 census))
Coleman, Watson R., married Nancy A. Walker, 29 Oct 1858
Coleman, William, married Martha Jane Doster, 2 Apr 1854
Regarding your Susan Coleman, I have the following on those who may be
related to her:
"The People of Chambers Co., AL, Vol III, The 1860 Census and Genealogical
Facts"
(Note: I see references to a Justice of the Peace named George E. Hodge as
the minister when Martha J. Coleman, sister of your Susan, married William
F. Brown. How was he related to your Levina Hodge Coleman?)
Pg. 247:
Household 217:
William T.? Brown, age 26, wagonmaker, real estate $150, property $1,800,
born in SC
Martha J. Brown, age 21, born in AL (about 1839) (See Martha J. Coleman &
Wm. F. Brown on marriage list)
Marcus Brown, 10 mos., born in AL
Susan A. Brown, age 16, born in SC
Household 218:
Richard B. Coleman, age 57, grocery merchant, (no birthplace given) real
estate $500, property $6000, slaves 2
Levina Coleman, age 58, born in GA
William H. Coleman, age 30, railroad agent, property $500, born in AL
John W. Coleman, age 24, overseer, property $500
Elizabeth Coleman, age 20
Frances Coleman, age 17 female
Henry C. Coleman, age 16, in school
Wiley Fitz Coleman and Nancy Elam Coleman are my line from Fairfield Co.,
SC. After Wiley died in SC in 1835, his widow, Nancy Elam Coleman and their
son David Roe Coleman (who had already married) moved their families to the
Hickory Flats area of Chambers Co., AL. Nancy is shown on the 1850 and 1860
Census of Chambers County, and the Colemans in the above list that I said I
could identify belong to her. She was living in Household 1146 on the 1860
census and 14 year old granddaughter Martha Cofield was living with her. In
Household 1145 next door was her Isobella married to Allen R. Wheelis. In
Household 425 was her daughter Lizzie married to Winston Gay. In Household
424 was David Roe Coleman and Nancy Elizabeth Coleman, my great great
grandparents. My great grandfather Hiram Fairfield Coleman was age 4 born
in SC on a visit, and his brother Edward Wilson Coleman was two. Edward who
would later marry Lola Marsh in Chambers County. Edward Wilson Coleman
preferred to live in Fairfield Co., SC. His wife Lola died and he remarried
his cousin Jennie Isabel Coleman who became the Coleman family historian and
her diaries are included in the J.P. Coleman book on the Coleman Family from
VA to TX.
There were many of this same family who moved to Green Co., AL, and others
made it to TX. My bunch never made it over the MS River as far as I can
tell, which makes it a little easier to trace them. I have often wondered
if there was a connection between Richard B. Coleman and my Colemans, but
have not found it. If he was born in TN, he may not be connected, since I
don't know of any of my Coleman line who was in TN. I don't have anything
on the Martindale family. In my Coleman line is an Abner Coleman, born
1846, son of John Greene Coleman who married an Elizabeth in Greene Co., AL,
in 1841, but I was not aware of an Abner in Chambers Co., AL. What census
did you find him on? It would be interesting to know if he was on the 1850
and told where he was born.
I don't have the complete text of all the above books, only the parts that
covered my family. If you are not in the Chambers Co., AR, I can check on
some of your names when I go back over to our genealogy library in Conroe,
TX. They have some pretty good references for Chambers County.
