Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Charlie,
I believe that many early records from South Carolina were lost in Court House
fires. Others were spread around (lost?) when the Old 96th District was
broken into several counties or parts of the new counties.
I had hit a brick wall in this area. Another researcher who is studying my
line came up with a lead by looking into the papers contained in the pension
applications for widows of veterans of the Revolution. What we need, if it
hasn't already been done, is a catalog of the Coleman descendants mentioned in
pension applications for the Revolution. The National Archives (NARA) in
Washington, D.C. has these records on microfilm for research by the public.
You may also find them in a few genealogical collections of major libraries
across the U.S. I believe they also are available in Nashville Tennessee but
I can't recall the name of the facility there. Maybe someone will remember
the name of it and reply to the list.
Colemans listed among the soldiers of the Revolution may be in a several
books, one of which is The Coleman Family by the American Genealogical
Research Institute. Since the AGRI apparently no longer exists, you may find
the text for chapter 5 concerning Coleman Patriots at:

I am interested in the list of Colemans. I keep looking for Captain
Kirk and Scottie, because I am becoming convinced my g-g-g-grandmother
was beamed down from somewhere. I can't seem to fine her origins on
earth. Her name was Elizabeth Coleman (supposedly from SC) and she
married Moses Coleman. This is a major brick wall for me, and an
information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Patrick,
I checked your old Thomas and children in my book. None are part of
my line and I did not include them in my lists of "stray COLEMANS" who
lived
near any of mine. Sorry, Jess

Thank you Teri for posting this information. The Melungeons were and still
are, a little known group that has been underestimated and looked down upon.
They are ordinary people just like you and I. I hope that this article
enlightens those that are biased against them just by their looks or by their
"lunjin" heritage. BTW, did anyone know that the Coleman surname is a common
Melungeon surname. I have a 3 KB list of the common Melungeon surnames if
anyone would like to see it.

To ALL researchers - In the Tuesday, May 30, 2000 Washington Post
(www.washingtonpost.com) there is an interesting article about a group
of people who are descendants of tri-racial ancestors living in the
VA/TN/KY area of the Appalachian Mtns. Although no Colemans are
mentioned, it is still a fascinating story. The online article is
titled "Roots of Oppression" by Carol Morello. If you have the hard
copy of the Post, it's on the front page.

He married ELINOR (ELLEN) BEASLEY Abt. 1844, daughter of JACOB (John)
BEASLEY and MARGARET UNKNOWN.
Dear Evelyn:
Do you know where in SC Jacob Beasley was from?
I might be able to help you w/the Beasley line when I return from vacation.
I am presently out of town (for a week) and of course, all my notes, etc. are
not w/me.
I have some Coleman data with connections to Kershaw/Fairfield County SC, as
well as extensive Beasley info from that area as well. We might be able to
tie the families in.

Hi Larry and Dave
Today is a great hit!!!! I managed to contact the COLEMAN/ROBERTS as
well as the COLEMAN/WILSONS, and Dave gave me Colby's wife's surname-
GEORGE! The Last was probably the biggest for me. Now I can compleat my
Coleman book: "CERTAIN CONFUSED< CONTRARY AND SOMETIMES CANTANKEROUS
COLEMANS OF EASTERN OHIO. That is if I don't get too
much spam about the name. Doris BENEDICT thought it was appropriate! She
is
furnishing the Nathan COLEMAN line. Now if Nancy RILEY will just answer
me
about Colby C*' Jr's family I can complete and publish it this year.
I have 11 pages of descendants of the WILSON's.
I have some of the ROBERTS descendants and a few of the marriages.
Elizabeth ROBERTS to Joseph COWAN; Mary ANN to Levi SMITH . Or should
it be the Mary Ann who married John THOMAS, son of Lydia C* and Enos
THOMAS?
A few weeks ago I made contact with descendants of Rebecca C*
who
married Harrison WARNER. I am still waiting for more data from them.
OH, I am not sure if we should keep this on the COLEMAN surname list
since we now are off on WILSONS,ROBERTS, COWANs, THOMASES, ect.. Besides
I need to send all of you xeroxes of what I have on your lines, then
enter what you all have. What say you?

Coleman Cousins,
I started some confusion about the Mobjack Bay Colemans and a possible
connection to the Payne family on the Payne list. There was a John Payne
who married Frances Coleman, born about 1713 of Spotsylvania, Virginia.
After looking on the LDS site I noticed her parents aren't listed for her
Ancestral File record.
Does someone recognize her? I know she's been mentioned before.
Bob McClure
Just a periodical posting of my interest; always hoping for a
connection!
Amelia COLEMAN b. ca. 1830, m. Samuel LOWE ca. 1850.
Their known issue Mary Jane b. ca. 1852 in NYC, USA.
Thanks,
Janet
What do I need to do to put my Coleman family out there to see if anyone
has the same family line I am looking for. My Coleman's Originated in
England with Able Coleman that came to America in the 1700's but because of
war he moved to Leeds Canada and for three generations that is where they
stayed.
Thanks Rosie
Does anyone know if there is a connection with Riggs families and Coleman by
1840? I am looking at the names of the children of Joshua and Sarah Ann Bird
looking for a connection that may have any information.
