Subject: Rip-offs of the genealogy community continues
Good Morning, friends and cousins in the genealogy community!
The response to the identification of the genealogy rip-off operation
in Denver last week has been tremendous with a steady stream of requests
for add'l info.
The operation in Denver with a newly discovered "branch" in Utah is an
incarnation of the identical scheme that Halbert's used. The same form
letters, books and newsletters are being sold, and the same fake
"Crests" and other products are being created "to exacting standards".
The new incarnation has not yet been linked financially to Halbert´s or
NUMA (Halbert parent), but the resemblance is so close, they could be
joined at the hip, operating under dba's Mountain West News Service,
Mountain Pacific News Service, and MORPHCORP. The Better Business Bureau
reports that the company has joined the BBB in January 2000, opened in
1985, and is rated as satisfactory. A complete history of Halbert's,
courtesy of Jeff Scism (despite our surname homonyms, we ain't kin ---
he hopes!) is available at
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~blksheep/shame/halberts.htm
Volunteers interested in assisting in informing the genealogy community
of this scam have come out of the woodwork. We would ask the recipients
of this email the following:
1) A sample of the Colorado flyer is at
http://www.dfc.cc/CyberCousins/genfraud.jpg
Print it and post in the genealogy section at your library with
appropriate message and make announcements at your gensoc.
2) After you have read it, as a researcher you realize the fraud that it
is. Go to the Federal Trade Commissions website at
https://www.ftc.gov/ftc/complaint.htm and file a complaint ONLINE. For
a sample complaint and further detailed information to use, please go to
http://www.dfc.cc/CyberCousins/complaint.txt
3) Forward this to every list you are on.
4) If you are a member of NGS (shane(a)ngsgenealogy.org) or FGS
(fgs-office(a)fgs.org), contact those organizations and ask that they get
members motivated. Gentech, Inc. (beau(a)connect.net) has a director and
a well-known regular conference speaker in the Denver metro. I asked
them to do some local research. No response to date.
5) Contact every genealogy columnist whose work you read, both local and
online such as Myra Gormley (myravg(a)prodigy.net} or Dick Eastman
(ROOTS(a)compuserve.com) who was stalwart in early work on Halbert's, both
of whom, as well as others, are on this list. No response to date.
6} If you have rec'd a flyer yourself, please report the names and
addresses to me. We need to know all the DBAs they are using. Then
take it to the local post office and file a complaint.
7) If you are in the Denver area, we need search of the court house
records to determine any corporate connections. If we can make a
corporate connection, I am fairly sure the restraints placed on
Halbert's can be extended by the proper authorities.
8) If you are a supplier (software, services, researcher) to the
genealogy community, this type of scam effects you even more.
Contribute to the effort.
9)This is no small time scam. Halbert's is owned by a company named
NUMA whih in turn is owned by CENDANT. Go to
http://itjobs.cendant.com/cendant_co.html to find other Cendant
companies. You will NOT be happy with how you have been doing business
with folks like this --- I promise you.
These scams are more likely to rip off folks less involved in genealogy
than most recipients of this msg. Most of us will recognize it for what
it is and trash it. That does not relieve us of the responsibility of
making it more difficult for these and other parasites within our
community to enjoy their ill-gotten gains. I have found far too many
that "don't want to get involved", "Didn't happen on my watch." (to use
an old Navy excuse), running from controversy and responsibility. Let
us unite in eradicating those that are behind an obvious attempt to
profit unethically from the popularity of genealogy.

I have been very fortunate lately and discovered numerous COLEMAN-TRAYNOR,
COLEMAN-HOGAN relatives in New Zealand and Australia. My great grandaunt Jane
COLEMAN b 1850 married Patrick TRAYNOR in the Catholic chapel at Knockmore,
Ballina, Backs, PR (Bax) April 1873. Patrick TRAYNOR was living in Ballina at
the time while Jane COLEMAN was living in Coolcran. Jane COLEMAN's parents
were PATRICK COLEMAN and Margaret MELVIN. Margaret's parents were Martin
MELVIN and Jane HOLMES.
Jane's sister Winifred COLEMAN b 1852 married John COLEMAN (another COLEMAN
line) and I am looking for information on the COLEMAN-COLEMAN,
COLEMAN-MELVIN, MELVIN-HOLMES lines and the associated families. Jane and
Winifred COLEMAN siblings were Andrew, Mary, Edward, Margaret.

There is a 45 year old William T. Coleman on p 87, house #625 of the 1850
Mecklenburg Co. VA with these persons in his household (I am assuming all
his children):
Mary b 1828, William b 1836, James b 1837, Sarah b 1842 and Virginia b
1848. There is also a Lucy Coleman, daughter of William T., married to
Durmont Hayse (p 116 house #314) with children George, Partrick [sic?]
and Marcus Hayse. I believe this is the William T. Coleman who married
Elizabeth Prichett 28 Dec 1824 in that county.
I would very much like to contact any relatives or researchers of the
family.

Hi list!
I am back on here temporarily. Found the COLEMANS below in Barren Co
Surveys on SCKY list. Thought someone could use it. I would love to know who
these COLEMANS are and where they are from. (My interest is a Thomas COLEMAN
who married Lucy STROTHER 1785 in Culpepper Co VA. They are in Barren Co KY
by 1802, where Thomas dies 1832.)
1799 Joses (Joseph?) COLEMAN. Jas MATTHEWS sold land.
SHERMAN, Robt WALLACE, GARNETT line. Henry COLEMAN
and Fields COLEMAN, chain carriers.
1799 Henry COLEMAN. Bought of Geo JAMESON. Joseph COLEMAN,
Robert WALLACE and GARNETT's line. Fielden and Grief COLEMAN, chain
carriers.
Well, I looked further. Found the will of Joseph COLEMAN
(Source: Barren Co Will Book 1, p. 129 )
Name: Joseph Coleman (where is he from?)
Written: 3 August 1808
Probated: October Court 1809
Wife: Jane Coleman (maiden name?)
Son: Grief Coleman - eldest son
Son: Field(ing) Coleman - 2nd son
Son: Philip Coleman - youngest son
Daughter: Betsy Kelly - oldest daughter
Daughter: Judy Coleman - youngest daughter

Source: Barren Co Will Book 1, p. 129.
Wondering if there are more children. Any thoughts appreciated.

My Coleman's started in New York and went to Canada after the
Revolution. They wound up on the losing side. William Coleman b. 1810
New York, d. 1897 in Caradoc Township, Ontario, Canada. He married
Elizabeth Cope b ca 1807 in Beverly Township, Ontario, Canada d. 1884
in Caradoc Township, Ontario, Canada.
They had the followig children James, Margaret, Darius, Cyrus,
Sevillia, William, John and Serepta.
Most of the information that I have on this line comes from a book
"My Gramma was Cope"
Does any of this look familiar to anyone. Check out my site at
thecolemans.net for more detail on this line.
Happy hunting!

I am looking for information on Cicero COLEMAN and his family. I believe
that Cicero is the father of Lucy Ella Coleman (b. Jan 1883, d. 1975) who
married Jacob A. DELLINGER (b. 1877, d. 1944), son of William Pinkney
DELLINGER. Lucy and Jacob were my wife's grandparents.
All were in Catawba Co. NC during the early 1900s, with Jacob and Lucy
moving to Burke Co. after 1920. Lucy apparently had family in Table Rock,
NC.
What little information I have on Cicero COLEMAN comes from the 1900 and
1910 census.
I did get a response from Derick S. Hartshorn [derick(a)twave.net] on the
Catawba-West list identifying a marriage between this Cicero Coleman and
Etta Cook in 1893, but this would have been a later marriage since Lucy and
the other children were born prior to that date.
