Hi,
I'm looking for parents and siblings of William Coleman b 1831 IL, m.
Hester Hazelwood 1850 in Alexander County, IL. I have that his father was
William, but no source for that info. I think the family may have been
from NY, as there were other Coleman families from NY nearby. Any info
would be appreciated.

Hi,
It is looking more and more as if George and Elizabeth COLEMAN ROBERTSON of
Pittsylvania Co., VA were progenitors of my ROBINSONs in Larue County, KY, so
I'd like to post a little information in hopes that someone will recognize
these people. I'm particularly interested in individual number 4 in the
descendant outline below, George Johnson Robertson. He married Elizabeth
COLEMAN in Dec. 1810. (The name Coleman is known to be in my line.) Three
of George and Elizabeth's children are known to be: Mary Robertson b. 1825;
Elizabeth Robertson b. 1827; George Robertson III b. 1828.
It would seem to me that there could be some children missing from those
first fifteen years of George and Elizabeth's married life.... My
g-g-g-grandfather, Christopher ROBINSON, was born in VA abt. 1821 (so he'd
fit right in), died in Larue Co., KY in 1861. **Parents named on his death
record -- George and Elizabeth ROBERTSON of VA.**
This is the information I found recently:
Christopher Robertson b abt 1758 Amelia Co, Va d 1833; wife Mildred Thompson*
b abt 1760 Amelia Co, Va d Nottoway Co, Va; F-Samuel Thompson* M-Nancy or Anne

I have a Coleman from England but don't have much info. Do you have any
info on the immediate family before they came to the US? I'm looking for a
connection to James Abraham COLEMAN b. Feb 1887 in London.
Thanks,
Peggy in Virginia
Hello COLEMAN researchers,
I have a Thomas COLEMAN born 1599 in Marlborough, England. This Thomas
came to America & lived a number of places in Mass. He marr. Susanna ?
who was born 1604 Hampton, Mass. This COLEMAN line relates to the
families of Nantucket Island. COFFIN, FOLGER, MAYHEW & MACY were a few.
My wife has connections to most of these families. I have a COLEMAN
connection going back to Robert COLEMAN born 1620 in England & came to
Gloucester County, Va. & marr. Elizabeth GRIZZELL.
I'm wanting to trace both COLEMAN lines farther back to see if I can
establish a connection between the ancestors of Thomas & Robert. I have
tried searching for both of them in England but no luck locating the
parents for either. I would like a reply from anyone who has data for
either of these COLEMAN lines.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Ed Jones New Palestine, In.
I have checked soundex for my Annie Coleman, in AR, MO and other states
where I had clues she might have been. No luck to date. Either she was in
transit, with another family under a different last name, or I am missing
something. Maybe I'll have to check all 50 states...
Wess & Sherrie are correct, soundex can be a great help. You can see a
sample soundex card from one of my ancestors at the URL below. Though it is
not a Coleman soundex card, it will give you an idea of what you might find,
especially if you aren't sure where your folks were.

Check the U. S. Census Soundex microfilms for 1880 in Arkansas. The Soundex
indexed the Children 10 years old(?) and below found in the U. S. Census for
certain years. I believe the records from 1880 are complete, or more so
than most. So I imagine you stand a good chance of finding Annie listed
directly. The Soundex coding for Coleman is C455.
Soundex codes begin with the first letter of the surname followed by a
three-digit code that represents the (first three) remaining consonants.
Soundex Coding Guide
1 = B,P,F,V
2 = C,S,G,J,K,Q,X,Z
3 = D,T
4 = L
5 = M,N
6 = R
The letters A,E,I,O,U,Y,H, and W are not coded.
Note that surname prefixes such as van, Von, Di, de, le, D', dela, or du are
sometimes disregarded in alphabetizing and in coding.

I recommend the Soundex highly to all who have never used it or U.S. Census
Records as it is the
best source of family history data for U.S. Census Records of 1880, 1900,

If you are stuck in this period, you should be using this resource.

Looking for parents and siblings of my grandmother, Annie Coleman. I have
not been able to locate her as a child in the census, but I did find her in
the census after she married my grandfather.
Annie Coleman married John Icenogle in Corning, Clay Co., Ark. 2 Oct 1895.
She was 17 years old at the time. Ed A. Kelley signed the marriage bond.
I have not found a connection between Ed A. Kelley and my grandparents.
I am told that Annie was from Ripley Co., Mo. I have found some
Coleman-Kelley marriages in Ripley Co., Mo. I have not been able to tie
these to my grandmother.
The Ripley Co., Mo. Coleman-Kelly marriages are:
James Kelly & Elizabeth Coalman - 18 Dec 1857
Francis Marion Coleman & Adeline Fansher - 27 Dec 1857
William Coleman & Mary Kelly - 26 Dec 1858
Annie is in the 1900 census of Clay Co., Ark., living in Nelson twp. The
census does not say what month she was born, but does say she was born 1879
in Missouri.
In 1910 Annie & family are still living in Nelson twp., Clay Co., Ark.
Children of Annie Coleman & John Icenogle:
Ella Tempe Icenogle (1897-1976)
Zay Icenogle (1900-?)
Leroy "Roy" Icenogle (1903-cir 1976)
Margaret Icenogle (1906-deceased cir 197?)
Otis Icenogle (1908-?)
Eunice Buck Icenogle (my father, 1911-1972)
Horace Greeley Icenogle (1914-1951)
Annie died about 1918.
By 1920, census records show her husband living in Ripley Co., Mo., widowed.
I, too, am descended from Thomas Coleman of Wiltshire, Marlboro,
England. I have a fair amount of information on Thomas Coleman starting
with his arrival in MA. His first wife, Susanna was not born in MA, but
in England because they both came to MA on the "James" according to
"Descendants of Thomas Coleman of Nantucket" by S.B. Coleman. A word of
caution about this book..it has some serious errors in it.
I did discover this record from the Morman's I.G.I. file on the
Internet: Thomas Collman, spouse Susan Raulnes, marriage 24 Nov 1623,
Wooton Rivers, Wiltshire Eng. I have no idea if this is our Thomas, but
it's probably worth pursuing.
