All,
Just a comment. Do any of you feel that the responses to queries on the

Re Coleman's in SC: If you ever figure out which people in the 1800's belong
to the Mobjack Bay family, and which to the Amelia Co.VA Coleman's, there are
a few dozen of us who will shout with joy!! The absence of some wills in the
late 1700's has placed a burden in trying to decide whose sons are whose!! The
Robert Coleman found in that huge Old 96 Dist. in the 1770's is Amelia Co
origin, and the son of Wm. Coleman of Amelia....his wife was Ann Hinton. BUT
we can't be sure of the names of all of their children, and can't identify who
Abner Coleman was..living there at the same time. We also know that Lucy(who
m. a Draper) and Frances(who m. a Gibbs) and Christopher(who m. a Marshall)
and probably one of the Robert's were 4 of the children....but more? and who?
There is a second Robert Coleman who m. a Susannah...and she was a widow at
the time...not the same man as above paragraph...separate line, we THINK!

Hello,
I am researching the COLEMANS of South Carolina and Georgia. I have 2
separate COLEMAN lines for now, but I feel they connect further back. I am
have great trouble trying to verify the father for my gggg grandmother
SUSANNAH COLEMAN b. ca 1795-98 poss. either Union Co., SC or in GA. She
married in 1813 Franklin Co., GA to ALEXANDER MURPHY/MURPHEY prob. born in
Caswell Co., NC, but cannot verify this yet. He may be related to Archibald
and Col. Alexander Murphey/Murphy of Caswell Co. SUSANNAH & ALEX. named their
first child Richard Coleman Murphy b. 1816 Franklin Co., GA. This family
removed to Lawrence Co., TN until 1840 when ALEXANDER died ca March 1840. I
have records of this estate sale in Lawrence Co. His widow and family removed
to Searcy Co., ARK where most of them remained. SUSANNAH d. 1863 Searcy Co.,
ARK, is buried in the Mainord/Rambo Cem. Her dau. TENNESSEE MARY (MARGARET?)
MURPHY b. 1826 TN d. 1896 Searcy Co. ARK, also bur: Mainord/Rambo Cem.(age 70
on monument), m.( 1st) DAVID COLEMAN GOATS, SR. b. 1820 Giles Co., TN d. ca
1850 Searcy Co., ARK (son of ELIZABETH COLEMAN & GEORGE GOATS of Fairfield
Co., SC) m.(2nd) William A. Watts b. 1823 TN. Another son of SUSANNAH &
ALEXANDER was named John Francis Murphy. The given name of Francis may be a
clue also. Later in this line is found a Harmon Murphy.
I have been theorizing that the RICHARD COLEMAN found in SC, Edgefield Dist.,
Union Twp in 1800, 1810., then in Franklin Co., GA 1818,1820 Capt. Baws Dist.
may be father of SUSANNAH.
Other COLEMANS found in SC Edgefield Dist. 1800-1810 were:
COLEMAN, WM
COLEMAN, FRANCIS
COLEMAN, HARMON
COLEMAN, JAMES
COLEMAN, JOHN
COLEMAN, MARY
COLEMANS found in Franklin Co., GA 1800-1830
COLEMAN, RICHARD
COLEMAN, JOHN
COLEMAN, ABNER
My ELIZABETH (COLEMAN) GOATS line goes back to ROBERT COLEMAN b. ca 1615, d.
1688, prob. VA. Some desc. were in Halifax Co., NC before removing to
Fairfield Co., SC. Would really appreciate any help & input on the SUSANNAH
COLEMAN line especially!! If her father was RICHARD COLEMAN, was he related
to the Rev. War Capt. RICHARD COLEMAN of VA/NC? Or, to the early RICHARD
COLEMAN around I believe Rappahanock Co., VA? Sure would love to know.
Thank you.

Hello Coleman family researchers!!!
I am trying to find out who a Charles G Coleman is. I found his info in the
1870 McDowell County Census under that of Curtis Coleman. Dwelling #120.
Family #130
Coleman, Curtis 28
Clarissa 30
David 12 (actually a Davis from Clarissa's first
marriage)
Lytha 10 (actually a Davis from Clarissa's first
marriage, should be
Sytha)
Sherman 4
Sheridan 2
Charles G. 75 farmer born in NC
I do believe Curtis Coleman to have descended from Peter Coleman, Sr through:
Peter Coleman Sr/ Daniel Coleman/William Coleman/Curtis Coleman.
Also, if anyone has info on the siblings of Curtis Coleman born about 1839 in
Tazewell Co, Va; served in the 39th Kentucky Volunteers Regiment during the
Civil War I would love to hear from you.

hello I am searching for a connection to my line and may have a connection to
Sirname "Coleman". if any one can help me I would be grateful.
My G- Grandparents John Baker Melton married Victoria Melton in Yalobusha Co.
Ms on 11-20-1892 with a J. T. Coleman signing as witness to their marriage.
The cemetery where my grandparents are burried has a Clifton and Eva Mae
Coleman next to there graves. Does any one have connections to Yalobusha,
Calhoun, or Grenada co. Ms that might be connected to these names? Thank
you.
I am looking for information about the ancestors of Adney Coleman (born
1827) and Sarah Simmons (born 1829) who were born in Richland County
Ohio they settled in Jones County Iowa. Sarah's parents also moved to
Iowa, they were Richard Beeman Simmons and Mary Myers of Virginia. Sarah
had at least one brother who was Jacob Simmons and one sister who was
Nancy Simmons. I believe Adney's father was Nathaniel Coleman and his
mother's first name was perhaps Peggy. He had at least one brother
named Nathaniel after their father. Both Adney and Sarah are buried in
the Olin Cemetery, Jones County, Iowa. If these names mean anything to
anyone out there I would appreciate hearing from you. Thank you.
Sherry
I just received the death certificate for my g-grandfather, Franklin Webster
Coleman. He was born in Marshall Co AL in 1867, parents were James G Coleman
and Julia Rachel Boshart, both born in Alabama. I am looking for anyone who
may have a James G. in their Alabama Colemans. They left Alabama and came to
Hill Co. TX sometime between 1867 and 1887. Would appreciate hearing from
anyone who has any information.
Thanks,
Betty Wingo

Anyone interested in Colemans of Fairfax Co., VA, check out the following
website. I received the info about the site from the Atkins mailing list,
searched their database of historical newspapers and found many Colemans
listed in the Fairfax News 1872-75. I haven't had time to check them all
out yet, but that was a good start.

Former Mississippi Governor and later Federal Judge J.P. Coleman
devoted over seven pages to Francis Coleman in his 1965 book, The
Robert Coleman Family---from Virginia to Texas---1652-1965."
Francis was born in Virginia in 1744 and lived in North and South
Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. He had a large family and died in
Washington County, Ala., at age 79 in 1825.
One basic fact that eluded the judge was the maiden name of
Francis's wife Margaret---and her name still remains a mystery to
those who continue to search for it. The two most prominent maiden
names researchers find connected to Margaret are Mobley and Daniel,
but the proof that either is correct is still lacking. When Francis and his
family settled in Fairfield County, S.C., he acquired land that bordered
property owed by Clement Mobley. So far, examination of Clement
Mobley's family has produced no Margaret.
We have found a Francis Coleman who settled in Greene County,
Alabama, who married a Francis Coleman. Unfortunately, he was a
generation or so younger than our Francis.
Does anyone have a clue? Is there some resource I haven't found.
Would appreciate any suggestions.
Jim
2/4/99 Looking for info on John Coleman who married Edith Mulet.Believe they
were from Va/WVa.Their son Jacob was born 1848 and M. Nancy
J.Christian.Jacob was born in Va/WVa. Mae emchaney(a)bright.net
I ran across the following reference:
J. P. Coleman's book records the diary of Jennie I. Coleman, an early
Coleman family historian who wrote about the origin of the three brothers,
William Thomas, and Charles who came from Virginia to Hallifax Co. North
Carolina and then to Fairfield Co. South Carolina arriving in 1775. She
recorded that the family emmigrated from Wales.
Does anyone know where I might find a copy of J.P. Coleman's book?

Hello, I am also a Coleman researcher. I am trying to find the parentage of
my ggg grandmother, Elizabeth Coleman, b in 1784 in New Jersey.
She married John Barber, Esq and they had seventeen children after migrating
to New York.
Twins are very common in my Barber line....might it stem from the
Coleman side?
I feel that her father was one of the 15 children of Samuel Coleman &
spouse Rebecca from Morris Co., N.J.
Their children were as follows:
Samuel, Jeremiah, William, Ephraim,Nathaniel, Penelope, Mary, John,
Benjamin, Lucretia, Joanna, Agnes, Sarah, Joseph and Josiah.
Just commenting....but some quidance would be appreciated.
Thanks...Joan
