I am reposting as I don't believe my first posting went through. If it did
then I apologize.
I have added a history by Bertha C. Chandler from a publication that
includes a wonderful sketch of the formation of several counties in the
Northern Neck of Virginia with some family information including
Stone/Harper/Paine/Carter and other families who may have settled 1650-1700 in
the Northern Neck of Virginia.

A while back I was contacted by someone researching Coleman's in NC, but can't
find the name. I found the following Coleman information while researching
another line in NC. I also have a Coleman line, but this isn't it (or at
least I can't find a direct connection). I can't pass up Coleman information
so hope this helps someone out there.

Kathy
Leigh,
This is in response to query #121 dated 31 July 98 to
the Coleman Digest page, V98.
If the answer has not already come in on the e-mail
address of the person who wrote the book, "Coleman
Family-Virginia to Pike County, Indiana," I have a coupe
of suggestions that might work.
1. Write to
Pike County Genealogical Society
Rural Route 2
Petersburg, IN 47567
or
Try one of the many free services on the internet that
lists e-mail addresses such as aol, etc.
I took a look at "Switchboard" where one can ask for phone
numbers and addresses. I found 10 or 12 Roblings listed in
the entire state of Indiana. Four of them had the same zip
code prefix as Pike County, i.e., 475. These or others listed,
could possibly be relatives of the author.
Good luck to Lorna,
Jim

I have a James Coleman, born Oct.22, 1799 in Orange County, NC, whose
father was also named James Coleman. I am trying to figure out who the
father is. Does anyone have any information on James Coleman (5)
[Daniel(4), Daniel(3), Daniel(2), Robert(1)] of Amherst County? He married
Anne Cocke. One source states that his brother, Spillesby, who married
Judith Burton, is in the Spillesby who is also in the Orange-Caswell-Person
county areas at the same time. Did the brother, James, and his wife Anne
live there also? Thanks, Linda, lcoleman(a)infinet.com
Linda (et al)-
That James5(Daniel4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Robert1) is brother to my ancestor, Rev
Benjamin Coleman. Benjamin moved to Kentucky with James' son Stephen. Indeed,
they had a brother Spilsbe who married Judith "Patsy" Burton and was Captain of
a North Carolina Regiment during the American Revolution.
You'll find some good information on James and his brothers (and the whole line
back) in Sherri Coleman Nicol's just released work "The Coleman Family of
Mobjack Bay, VA." You can reach Sherri at 6930 32nd Ave W, Bradenton, FL
34209-5908.
According to that book, James5 had a son James born abt1765 d abt1827
Buckingham Co, VA married Mary "Polly" Watkins abt1785. There's no reference
to either James having been in North Carolina. It doesn't sound like a match
to me - and my cursory glances through Sheri's book don't turn up a James b1799
in NC.

Would like to make contact with any of the descendents of Charles A.
Coleman (b 1 Dec 1830 VA, d 16 Nov 1890 Franklin Co. TN) and his wife
Sarah M. Moseley (b 21 May 1836 VA, d 21 Feb 1910). From the 1870, 1880
and 1900 census, their children were:
Francis "Frank" A. b abt 1857,
William F. b 17 Mar 1866,
Minnie G. b Nov 1868,
Felix H. b Nov 1868,
Mabra b Sep 1871,
Tom b Jan 1874.
Charles A. Coleman was the son of Wesley W. Coleman and Lucy Coleman
(probably a cousin). Their other children, in addition to Charles A.,
were Susan J. b abt 1835, Henrietta b abt 1838, James T. b abt 1840, and
Roderick B. b abt 1845. I would very much like to know more about these
children and their families. Wesley and Lucy moved from Mecklenburg Co.
VA, where they were married Feb 1830, to Franklin Co. TN after 1845 and
before 1850, when they appear in the Franklin Co. TN census. Any help
will be appreciated. Thank you. Mary Urban

GENEALOGY PERSONAL HOME PAGES
Hi! I just added a page which is dedicated to all researchers who have a
genealogy site on the WEB plus for those looking for a certain surname. This
site lists surnames & genealogy personal home page links of those who are
providing online information for their ancestors. I am hoping this page will
let people searching for a particular surname find web pages with a matching
surname without going through multiple search engines or webrings. You don't
have to join anything or mess with passwords - just fill out a form. Right
now this page is in the beginning stages but I hope it will grow in time and
serve as a very useful genealogy resource to all that are interested. We've
got 230 links already!
I encourage you to check out my page and if interested in contributing your
information, complete my form. Then your web page address and surnames will
be added to this page after review (within a week unless I am overwhelmed).
If your web page and surnames are not on the page within a week, please email
me to find out why. All that I ask for this service is that on your page you
provide a link back to:
Genealogy Personal Home Pages. The address is:
http://members.aol.com/Indianbrav/surnames.html
Here's a direct link:

Can someone explain to me the "path" of Appomattox River " which flows thru
VA. From what I can make out, it appears that the Appomattox runs between
several different counties. I am trying to figure out "where" my Coleman

In a message dated 98-08-20 10:31:09 EDT, you write:
<< What time period for the Coleman's in Ont? Do you know where they went
from there? >>
William and Sarah Wright Coleman arrived in Toronto (from England via
Montreal) in the mid-1840's. They had seven sons and one daughter.
Sons JOHN and EDWARD went to California and became naturalized US citizens.
They're the ones I know most about.
Daughter SARAH ANN lived with her parents until they died (when?) and then
went to live in San Francisco with her brother Edward, who had by then become
a widower.
Son CHARLES worked for the US Treasury Dept., but I'm not sure whether he did
so in the US or represented the Dept. in Canada. He may have drowned in the
bay in 1899.
Son GEORGE had a Confectionery and Restaurant establishment on King Street.
Son ARTHUR was a contractor and real estate owner. He married Sarah Renick (?)
and they had four children: FANNY, SARAH, CLARA and EDWARD.
I know nothing about son BEN or son WILLIAM, except that William drowned in
the Bay in 1899.
Any information about these people or their descendants would be most welcome.
Thanks,
Diantha Barstow
