RE: "The Coleman Family" by the American Genealogical Research Institue, 1973.
Since there appears no way to obtain this work other than copying a library copy which
does not circulate, as I did, and because such works are considered freely distributable,
Chapters 4 and 5 are now on my web site for viewing as regular HTML files and
for online string searches.
Chapter 4 covers Coleman heads of households listed in the First US Census (of 1790).
Chapter 5 covers Patriots and Veterans of the Revolutionary War and their family members.
The data has been run through a spell checker and OCR errors thus identified were corrected.
However, any questions may be forwarded to me and I will check the original.
Enjoy!

Coleman

Spartanburgh-SC VA Warren-KY
#1822:
Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed.,
1886.
Allen County.
REV. MORDECAI F. HAM was born in Allen County April 30, 1816, and is a
son
of William and Jennie (Williams) Ham, natives of Spartanburgh County, S.
C.
They came to Kentucky early in the present century, probably about 1806,
and located on Trammell's Creek, in what is now Allen County. William Ham
died in September, 1844, aged sixty years. His wife, who was a distant
relative of Roger Williams, survived until 1862; her age was eighty-four
years; she was the mother of eleven children, nine of whom lived to be
grown. James Ham, the father of William Ham, was of English descent, and
by
occupation a farmer. Rev. M. F. was born and reared amid the scenes and
labors incident to farm life. The boy was the man in embryo; he early
developed a love for books; he read voraciously and incessantly; his sole
aim seemed to be to acquire an education. Books were scarce, and the
school
terms of the country were of short duration, but young Ham set himself to
work assiduously, giving all the time possible to his studies, and
thereby
became well versed in the English classics, and also obtained some
knowledge of the Greek language. November 24, 1836, he married Elizabeth
J., daughter of William and Sarah (Neal) Dearing, who were natives of
Virginia, and were among the pioneer settlers of Warren (now Allen)
County;
they died in 1855 and 1847 respectively. Rev. M. F. Ham professed
religion
February 19, 1837, and in March following united with the Baptist Church,
in which he has since been an active member. In March, 1843, he was
ordained to the full work of the ministry by Elders Witherspoon, Evans,
Brunson and William Spillman, and during the forty-two years of his
ministerial duties he has met with wonderful success. He estimates that
he
has baptized over 2,000 persons, and that through his labors no less than
3,000 persons have been added to the church. Throughout his ministry he
has
prosecuted the work of the Master with a zeal commensurate with the
importance of his mission. His preaching is characterized by simplicity
and
earnestness, and from the inexhaustible treasury of the Word he sought to
bring forth "things old and new." Father Ham, though now in his
sixty-ninth
year, is hale and stout, and ministers to his charge with undiminished
zeal
and success. He is a zealous and untiring advocate of the temperance
cause,
and the sledge hammer blows dealt by him against the liquor traffic have
done much to abate the evil. In politics, Mr. Ham was originally an "old
line Whig," but of late years he is a Democrat. He takes little interest
in
political affairs. He has all his life been a hard worker, and now
superintends the cultivation of a farm of 400 acres, which he owns. He
has
two brothers and one sister, living, viz.: James and L. W. Ham and
Assenith
Dodson, and three surviving children: Sarah J. and T. J. Ham, and M J.
COLEMAN.

Hello COLEMAN researchers,
I'm seeking any information for my gr gr grandmother Rebecca COLEMAN who
married James JONES 12/15/1819 in Mason County, Ky. I have the marriage
bond which was signed by her father being Daniel COLEMAN. I have been
searching for many years with no luck finding Daniel & others of his
family. James & Rebecca had a daughter named Amanda Elizabeth JONES born
3/4/1831.
I'll share any data which I have. Thanks in advance for any help in my
search,

While at the Library of Congress, I found this in the
Daughters of the American Revolution - Lineage Book 96:
"MRS. ALICE COLEMAN McDOWELL. 95982
Born in Hale County, Ala.
Wife of E. B. McDowell.
Descendant of Charles Coleman, as follows:
1. Harvey Coleman (1848-1910) m. 1st 1868 Emma Allen (1851-75)
2. James Cobb Coleman (1810-68) m. 2nd 1836 Juliet Bestor (1811-59)
3. John Coleman (1781-1852) m. 1807 Rhoda Cobb (1793-1863)
4. Charles Coleman m. 1765 Mary Roundtree (1750-1821)
"Charles Coleman (1744-1824) served as quartermaster in the third
North Carolina regiment. He was born in Edgecomb County, NC;
died in Green County, Ala.
Also No. 40171."
I believe Green County should be spelled Greene County.
This may be of interest to a handful on this list. This person is not
in my line.
I am researching the COLEMAN FAMILY from Izard Co. AR. Below is the info I
currently have.
1. William T. COLEMAN b. 1847 in AR; d. Oct. 26, 1920; buried at Nail
Cemetery in Giuon, Izard Co., AR (I am not sure who his parents are)
+ Martha C. FORGEY b. July 12, 1851 in MS; d. Oct. 28, 1917; buried at Nail
Cemetery in Giuon, Izard Co., AR ( Her parents were, William and Sarah
FORGEY)
CHILDREN OF WILLIAM T. COLEMAN AND MARTHA C. FORGEY:
1-1. Sarah Francis "Fannie"COLEMAN (on the 1870 Izard Co. Census, Bayou
Twnshp, it list her as Nancy 2 years old, born in AR, on the 1880 Izard Co.
Census, Lafferty Creek Twnshp, it lists her as Sarah Francis, I had been
told Fannie, this is how I came up with her birth year) b. 1868 in AR ; she
married Andrew COLLIE abt.1886. (this info comes from the 1900 Izard Co.
Census, Drytown Twnshp)

1-1-4. Snoda COLLIE b. Dec. 1899
1-2. William G. "Grant" COLEMAN b.1870 in AR, ( I show from a family book
on "Gardner's, Kendrick, Forgey, Parker, Gage-McComas Families", written by
Claudine McCallay Dollar in Blair, OK that he married Caroline WOODALL MOSER
second. I don't know who his first wife was.) On the 1880 Izard Co. Census,
Lafferty Creek Twnshp it shows that he is listed with his parents and it
shows that he is 10 years old.
1-3. James W. COLEMAN b. Feb. 25, 1872 in AR; d. Mar 7, 1957; buried at
Nail Cemetery in Giuon, Izard Co., AR ( the birth and death dates come
from the cemetery listing, I believe they are probably right as on the 1880
Izard County Census, Lafferty Creek Twnshp it states that he is 8 years old,
but, on the 1900 Izard Co. Census, Lunenburg Twnshp, it gives his birth date
as Jan, 1874.) From the same family book mentioned above, by Claudine
McCallay Dollar, I learned that he married + Elizabeth PENTACOST. On the
1900 census she is Lizzie b. Oct. 1868 in MO, it shows that her parents
were born in VA and TN.
CHILD OF JAMES W. "JIM" COLEMAN AND ELIZABETH "LIZZIE" PENTACOST ON THE 1900
IZARD CO. CENSUS, LUNENBURG TWNSHP
1-3-1. Virgil COLEMAN b. Jan. 1897 in AR (from the 1900 census)
1-4. Samuel P. "Pete" COLEMAN b. 1874 or 1876 in AR ( on the 1880 Izard
Co. Census, Lafferty Creek Twnshp, it states that he is 6 years old but on
the 1900 census it states that he was born in Jan., 1876. On the 1900 Izard
Co.Census, he is living in the home of W. Alex Pitmen/wife Sarah E. and
Dau. Julia M.)
1-5. Lucinda A. "Cindy or Cinda" COLEMAN b. 1876 or Feb. 1877 in AR ( on
the 1880 Izard Co. Census, Lafferty Creek Twnshp, it shows that she is 4
years old which would have made her being born in 1876, but, on the 1900
Izard Co. Census Drytown Twnshp, it shows her birth date as Feb, 1877) + she
married Frank M. COLLIE abt. 1885 (this info comes from the 1900 Izard Co.
Census Drytown Twnshp, it shows that they were married 5 years in 1900)
CHILDREN OF LUCINDA A. "CINDY OR CINDA" COLEMAN AND FRANK M. COLLIE FROM THE
1900 IZARD CO. CENSUS, DRYTOWN TWNSHP.
1-5-1. Myrtle COLLIE b. Jan 1897
1-5-2. Ross COLLIE b. Jan. 1898
1-5-3. Omer J. COLLIE b. May 1899
1-6. Mary M. COLEMAN b. July 1879 (on the 1880 Izard Co. Census, Lafferty
Creek Twnshp., it shows that she is 1 year old, on the 1900 Izard Co. Census
it gives the above birth date) I received the info that she + married 1st,
John SIPES from my grandmother and had it confirmed by the book of Claudine
McCallay Dollar's. On the 1900 Izard Co. Census she is listed as the wife
of John SIPE, I don't know for sure the correct spelling of his surname but
I think that it is SIPE because on her husband's tombstone in Midway
Cemetery, Flores, Beaver Co., OK, it is SIPE. It shows his name as J. D.
SIPE ; born Nov. 24, 1862; died March 5, 1912, I believe these dates are
probably correct as it agrees with the census info I have. Mary's
tombstone shows that she was born 1881 and died 1924. From the census info,
I believe her birth year on her tombstone is wrong. Mary's tombstone also
says "IN MEMORY OF OUR MOTHER, RUTH, AUDREY, ELLIS". I was told by my
grandmother, her niece, that she + married 2nd a CROSS. I am pretty sure
this is right as in the family plott at the cemetery is a Floyd Allen CROSS
born 1917 died 1918 and he is probably the son of Mary and her CROSS
husband.
CHILDREN OF MARY M. COLEMAN AND JOHN D. SIPE ON THE 1900 IZARD CO. CENSUS
1-6-1. RUTH SIPE b. Aug. 1898 (She is buried at Midway Cemetery, Floris,
Beaver Co., OK, just to the south of her mother. Her last name on the
tombstone is DUERSON. I don't know as yet her husband's given name or dates
of marriage.
OTHER CHILDREN OF MARY M COLEMAN AND JOHN D. SIPE FROM INFO GATHERED FROM MY
GRANDMOTHER AND CEMETERY INFORMATION AT MIDWAY CEMETERY, FLORIS, BEAVER CO.,

1-6-2. Leslie Olen SIPE b. Oct 12, 1900; d. Feb. 14, 1910
1-6-3. Ellis W. Sipe b. 1909; d. 1991
1-7. John Sherman COLEMAN b. Feb. 2, 1882 in AR; d. Jan. 8, 1916 in
Beaver Co. OK, he died from complications of the flu. ( this is my GG
Grandfather) on the 1900 Izard Co., Drytown Twnshp, AR Census it states that
he was 18 years old, this agrees with info I have. + He married Dora
Florence COKER in Blair, Jackson Co., OK on March 4, 1908, I have a copy of
the marriage certificate, they were married by a Reverend Hawkins. Dora
Florence COKER was born March 26, 1882 in AR, her parents were James Lee
COKER and Matilda Caroline WILLIAMS. Dora died in 1957 in Farmington, NM,
she was staying with her daughter, my grandmother, Opal Oma COLEMAN,
CLIFFORD, HEATHCOCK, at the time. John and Dora are both buried at Midway
Cemetery, Floris, Beaver Co., OK. John Sherman COLEMAN, dug water wells for
a living. When they were first married they lived in Clovis, NM for a time.
I am not sure as yet when they moved to Beaver Co. OK. After his death at
some point his wife Dora owned and operated a restaurant in Forgan, OK
called the "Blue Bird Caf".

McCallay Dollar. On the 1900 Census her birth date is listed as, July 1881)
d. 1920 and is buried in Blair Cemetery in Blair, Jackson Co., OK. + She
married William D. MOSER abt. 1898-1899. Claudine McCallay Dollar's book
says abt. 1899 but, the 1900 AR Census states that they have been married 2
years which would make it 1898. William D. MOSER was born according to the
1900 AR Census in Oct., 1877 but, in Claudine's book she states his birth
date as Oct. 7, 1878 in Guion, Izard Co., AR. He died, according to
Claudine's book, in 1963 at Cushing, OK.

There is more on this family in Claudine's book and if anyone is interested
I will be happy to share the info with them.
1-9. Lula " Lulie" COLEMAN b. March 1886 ( this info comes from the Izard
Co., Drytown Twnshp, AR Census 1900) I have written down that she married a
Ferguson, this info came from Charlie Moser's wife in Borger, TX. I don't
know if this is right or not.
1-10. Oscar COLEMAN b. Feb. 1876 ( this info comes from the Izard Co.,
Drytown Twnshp, AR Census 1900)
1-11. Harrison Coleman (He doesn't show up on the census up to 1900. My
grandmother, Opal Oma Coleman, Clifford, Heathcock, says that he was a deaf
mute and at one time stayed with her family in Forgan. I am still searching
for a record of him)
I would appreciate hearing from anyone researching this family line. I am
especially wanting to know who William T. COLEMAN'S father and mother were.
Charles Moser told my grandmother that one of their grandmothers was full
blood Indian and lived in a teepee behind William COLEMAN'S house and came
with the Trail Of Tears. I haven't got far enough to verify this yet.
There is a mention of a Granny Fannie Holcomb. I don't know where she would
come in.

Wes Coleman's Genealogy page has been updated.
"Early Colemans in America" is now labeled "Origins of Early Colemans in America"
and summarizes information from many more sources regarding the origin of
the name.
Wes Coleman
http://ro.com/~coleman/genealogy.htm
Right, and I need to update that page, or separate the Origins of the Name
to another page and update that. I copied more on this topic when in DC at
the Library of Congress a couple weeks back or so.
There are probably many origins. For example, it has been posted to this
list that some Colemans came from Holland. I have read that the German
name, Kohlman, was americanized to Coleman. I have read that Colemans
in the early Colonial America who lived and fought next to each other were
unrelated. Coleman was a very common name in other places before the
1600s when we saw the European migration to our country begin.

>and the meaning of the name of the Colemans. Seeming as
>though I always thought Coleman was an Irish name.
I would not know & make no comment. The AGRI book says on
page 4:
The given name Cole is a form of Nicholas ("people of
victory"). Old King Cole, for example, was a well-known
name from early English folklore. The name came to
England through the Saxons and their barbarian German
heritage: St. Columba was a German saint, as was St.
Coleman whose holy day is celebrated every year on
November first. The surnames Cole and Coleman are thought
by most authorities to be derived from such German
influences.
Cole was often a nickname during the eleventh century
either for a man whose trade was the making or selling of
charcoal (hard coal was not readily available until a much
later date) or for a dark-haired man of dark-complected
appearance. Most often these nicknames gave rise to such
names as Collier and Collins. A Coleson would have been
the son of the man named Cole. But a Coleman or Colman
would probably have been a servant or dependent of a man
named Cole. The Colman spelling is rare except in the
English counties of Essex and Norfolk, while the Coleman
spelling has existed unchanged from at least the year 1273
and may be considerably older.
The surname Cole is primarily common to southern England.
Coleman is concentrated also in the south, mainly in the
counties of Kent, Northampton, Sussex and Essex."
>Does the book list any Colemans in Oneida County, NY
>before the 1800's?
The Colemans in 1790 were in these NY counties per AGRI:
Orange, Suffolk, Dutchess, Ulster, Kings, New York,
Clinton, Washington. Is Oneida County's land in one of
those counties in 1790? Maybe the list will answer that.
