The 34th Virginia Cavalry fought a battle/skermish in Harrisburg in the last
week of June (don't have date handy), they then returned to and occupied
Carlisle, then moved back to the front of Lee's column. The 34th then joined
with the rest of Stuart's Cavalry and fought on the East Cavalry Field at
Gettysburg.History has brushed the 34th under a rug mainly for two reasons.
1. They were considered to be nothing more than "a band of hillbillys", even
though they distinguished themselves in battle many times.
2. LTC Witcher, the 34th's Commander, was not pleased with Stuarts performance
or the fact that he let the 34th take the brunt of the East Cavalry Field
battle alone. The 34th dismounted 332 men on the morning of July 3rd. 96 fell
in on the morning of the 4th.
Sorry to kinda get off track here but I felt it important to clarify this
subject. If you had ancestors in Buchanan or Tazwell Counties in VA or the
adjacent Counties in WV, there is a very good possiblity they fought in the
34th.
So far most of the Buchanan/Pike County Colemans I have found fought with the
39th Kentucky, Mounted Infantry (Union).

Harrisburg is in PA, Harrisonburg in VA.
To be sure where this John died, one would need to check the
location of the battle he fought in.
My memory (which may well be imperfect in this case) is that
the northernmost battle of the Civil War was Gettysburg, which is somewhat
near but south ofHarrisburg, PA.
I don't know whether there were any battles in/near Harrisonburg.

I am Homer B. Coleman, the great great grandson of Isaac Coleman who was born
about 1805. Isaac married Amelia Pendergrass ( born Lancaster County, S.C.) on
October 20, 1830 in Jackson County, Ga. Their children were Thomas P. (1832),
John (abt 1833), Sara F. Coleman (1834), Levi (1836) and Salina Jane Coleman
(abt 1841). All the children were born in Jackson County, Ga.
I am descended through Thomas P. Coleman and pretty well have the descendants
in this line complete.
John never married and was killed in the Civil War in Harrisburg, Va.
Levi married a Mary Boyd, but was killed in the Civil War.
Sarah never married, but spent a part of the rest of her life taking care of
her grandfather, John Pendergrass.
Salina Jane married a William J. Gilliland in 1858.
Amelia Pendergrass Coleman died in 1841. Jackson County marriage records show
that Isaac married I. Martin December 8, 1841. A book on Pendergrass genealogy
shows I. Martin to be Bertha Martin and the children of this marriage to be
Nancy M. (abt 1844), Artimisa C. (abt 1846) and Margaret P. ( abt 1849).
The Georgia census shows Isaac in Early County in 1830, in Jackson County in
1840 and in Walton County in 1850 and 1860. The census also showed Thomas P.,
Levi and Sara still in Jackson County in 1860. (Thomas P., John and Levi all
joined different Confederate units from Jackson County.)
The Georgia census shows no further record of Sara after 1860, although she
was buried at the Lebanon Methodist Church in Jackson County on November 27,
1913.
Registered Deeds show that Thomas P. had purchased land in Walton County in
1873 where farmed until about 1895. He died Mt Olive, Al on May 30, 1900.
So I guess my questions are:
Does anyone know of the parents of this Isaac?
Does anyone have information on Isaac's children by his second marriage?
Did Levi and Mary Boyd have children?
Does anyone have information on Salina Jane and William Gilliland?
I would be glad to furnish the information I have on the descendants of Thomas
P. to anyone in a related family line. E-mail me at Nameloc(a)aol.com or
Nameloc(a)Belsouth.net
Thank you.
You can eliminate the Charles Coleman b1763, Kent Co. MD. He moved all his
family to PA about 1810. Had a son and grandson named Charles. Both died in
PA. There was a Charles who died in Kent Co. MD about 1810. I and several
cousins are working on him--ggggfather, gggguncle, or what? Happy hunting,
Pauline. DICK COLEMAN.
I have gotten interested, somewhat, in the Charles S. Coleman
born apparently in Alabama in 1840. I know from books I have
read that the Revolutionary War patriot, Charles P. Coleman,
after the War, relocated to Greene County, AL. This was probably
a couple of generations before. I have some records on him
(Charles P. Coleman) I copied at the National Archives, but I don't
think I have any of his children in that. It is a puzzle piece that is
missing at this point..

The AGRI book has census only for 1790. Since his
grandfather & gt. uncles would be in the 1790 census & he
MIGHT have gotten his name Charles from them -- his Coleman
kin, I thought I'd see what states have Charles Colemans.
These states had Colemans, but no Charles:
CT, KY, MA, NH, RI, SC, VT, VA
The only state with no Coleman was Maine.
Now here are the Charles Colemans:
Charles H. Coleman Cecil Co MD
Charles Coleman Dutchess Co NY
Charles Coleman Halifax Co NC
Charles Coleman Salisbury NC
Charles Coleman Bucks Co PA
Charles Coleman Dauphin Co PA
Charles Coleman Dauphin Co PA
Charles Coleman Dauphin Co PA
(hope you don't have to sort out the 3 from Dauphin Co)

The only marriages that it lists are from the 1600s.
There are 7 marriages:
Hannah Coleman in Hadley MA
Hanry [sic] Coleman in NYC
Henry Coleman in NY
John Coleman in Wethersfield CT
Mary Coleman in Hadley MA
Noah Coleman in Hadley MA
William Coleman in Gloucester MA
It list only 4 Charles Coleman's in the Rev.:
Charles Coleman b.1763 Pvt. in MD unit m. Eliz. Early
Charles Coleman b.1750-55 in NC unit m.Mary Roundtree
Charles Coleman b.1762 in SC unit m. Eliza Gibson pension
rejected
Charles P. Coleman b.unk. in NC unit m. Fanny __
It gives 23 Colemans' immigration info all for the 1600s &
1700s. There was no Charles.
So the book gives a person leads to wet your appetite for
hitting the court houses & archives.
This AGRI book is not indexed but the lists of marriage,
immigration, etc. are in separate chapters with given names
in alphabetical order.
I also checked the index to the J.P. Coleman's book & there
is no: Brodnax nor Knox & the only Calhoun is John C.

Believe I recently discovered parents of my great-grandfather, Henry
Coleman. Henry was born in Fairmont, Ill., Jan. 6, 1846. Parents, Emory
Coleman and Fidelia Clemania G. Butler. Henry married Elizabeth "Jane"
Bixler and they moved to Adams County, Iowa. They may have homesteaded
near Albany, Mo., in 1869. Had 3 children: John Emory, Lura Effie and
Allen Edwin (my grandfather). Henry and Allen Edwin later lived in
Nebraska.
Seeking any and all info on Henry's ancestors - particularly a link to
Thomas Coleman who came to Nantucket, Mass., from England aboard the
James in 1635.
Would also like info on the family of Allen Edwin's wife, Lily Pearl
Bender.
Thanks much,
Tammy Coleman

We list approx 90% of all Civil War veterans from Buchanan County with
links to surronding counties. Most Colemans can be found in the roster
of the 39th Kentucky Mounted Infantry (Union). We do list one on the BCW
roster who was Confederate. Many people are trying to make a connection
for this person. It was generally believed that there was only one
Richard Coleman until we started our Civil War research and found that
one (the Union, Richard) had been killed in the war. We have not been
able to connect the Confederate Richard to any of the other Buchanan or
Pike Colemans. Can anyone help?
