Fellow Coleman researchers:
I am fairly new to the list, so this may all be old news for many of you. In
my search for the parents of my Anne Coleman who married Beverly Shelton, 1769
in Pittsylvania Co VA, on the Pittsylvania Co genweb site, I ran across the
following on a 12 year old Daniel Coleman in Pittsylvania, 1780.
It is at this URL: http://www.rootsweb.com/~vapittsy/families.htm#Coleman
Happy New Year

The Coleman Family
YOUTHFUL COURAGE IN A MANS WORLD
An express rider dashed from the headquarters
tent with vital orders to be delivered. The year
was 1780.
He mounted his horse with the confidence born
of experience and sped through the trackless
forests of Pittsylvania County.
Unusual? Well, yes. He was only 12 years of
age!
The lad was Daniel Coleman and his destination
was the tent headquarters of the commandant of
Pittsylvania.
Along some 50 miles of largely unmarked trails
and roads young Daniel urged his mount, while
in his saddle bags he bore orders for troops to
muster at Irvines Ferry and march to the relief of
General Greene.
With unerring accuracy the mission was
completed, and the relief column marched
without delay.
General Greene, relieved of the pressure of
Cornwallis men, then crossed the Dan in safety.
Had the youthful "express" faltered in his
dangerous mission, more American lives may
have been lost to the threatening Redcoats.
It may be that this boys courageous action was
a contributing factor as Cornwallis wheeled
about and made his way deeper into North
Carolina
The records telling of Colemans early life are
very sparse, indeed. He is on record living in
Halifax Co. when the resident commandant
employed him as express rider.
Daniel was a son of Stephen Coleman of
Cumberland County. The elder Coleman had
moved prior to the start of the revolution into
Pittsylvania County and had taken up residence
near Java. Young Daniel, born in 1768, was the
eldest of nine children: Daniel, Stephen, Jr.,
Thompson, Annie, Elizabeth, Patsy, Lucy, Polly
and Judith.
Following his adventures in the Revolutionary
War, Daniel served as deputy sheriff, a role that
earned him universal respect because of his
integrity and kindness. His towering physique
may have served him well in the performance of
his duties.
Coleman was elected to the General Assembly in
1803 and was returned to that body a total of
seven times.
He was commissioned a Justice of the Peace
and ultimately rose to the position of Presiding
Justice. He held this post for a number of years.
Such was the estimate of his services as a
magistrate, that the court commissioned a
portrait in oil to be made of the patriot which was
hung above the bench in the County court room.
His commission as Captain of Militia was dated
July, 1794. He served successively in the 101st
Pittylvania Regiment and in the 42nd Regiment.
Here he was elevated to the rank of Major and
then Colonel. He led this command prior to, and
during, theWar of 1812.
Colonel Coleman married, on November 21,
1798,Anne Payne Harrison, daughter of William
Harrison. Ten children were born to the union.
In appearance Colonel Coleman literally was a
head and shoulders taller than an average man,
according to his friend Benjamin W.S. Cabell.
"In full dress, wither in the drawing room or in
the fieldhe was the beau ideal of an officer, "
said Cabell.
Today the stonemarking the final resting place
of this defender of an infant nation is standing in
a weedy plot near Riceville.

==================
Robert L. Coleman. proprietor of Piggott Hotel, Piggott, Ark., and the son
of Col. David and Sarah (Love) Coleman, was born in Haywood County. N. C.,
March 26, 1823. Col. David Coleman was a native of North Carolina, but moved
to Tennessee at an early day, locating in Carroll County, where he followed
farming, and there remained until his death. He served as colonel of the
State militia. His wife, Sarah Love, was also a native of North Carolina.
Her father, Gen. Thomas Love, was in the Revolutionary War as well as the
War of 1812. Robert L. Coleman was reared to manhood on a farm in Tennessee,
read law in Carroll County and was admitted to the bar, after which he
practiced there until his removal to Missouri in 1851. He then located at
Hartsville, Wright County, practiced there for three years and upon
returning to Tennessee, engaged in mercantile pursuits until the breaking
out of the late war, when he enlisted in the Confederate service, in 1862,
in Col. Napier's regiment. He remained in this regiment for about eight
months, afterward being in Col. Green's regiment, where he was promoted to
adjutant and served in that capacity. He was captured at Parke's Cross Roads
by Gen. Sullivan, was held a prisoner at Camp Douglas for over three months,
and was then exchanged. He then returned to Tennessee and did not enter the
service again. He resumed the practice of law in Carroll County for about
three years, but finally gave up law. He has been a member of the Methodist
Episcopal Church, South, for many years and was licensed to preach in 1868.
He was a local preacher in his church for some years. He was ordained deacon
in 1870 at Trenton, Tenn., by Bishop McTyre, and followed his ministerial
duties in Tennessee up to 1875, when he moved to Arkansas, settling at Oak
Bluff in Clay County, and there resided for a number of years. He taught
school for nine months, and then engaged in the manufacture of tobacco in
1878, which occupation he has followed up to the present date. He built his
hotel in the fall of 1888 and moved in December. His is the first and last
and only hotel in Piggott. Mr. Coleman was married in Carroll County, Tenn.,
December 4, 1850, to Miss Harriet E. Norman, a native of Carroll County, and
the daughter of Judge John Norman. To this union were born three children,
two daughters and a son: Sarah N., wife of Albert Hubbard, of Piggott;
Mollie A., widow, and John R., who died May 7, 1883, in his twenty-fifth
year. Mr. Coleman was ordained local elder here in 1881 by the same bishop
that ordained him deacon in Tennessee.
