Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
It worked for me! Thanks!! Now no one will have to worry about
scanning that one! And it only took 2 minutes to download at
~24 kbps. The zip file is about 375 KB.

He mentions the Coleman family in Virginia, North Carolina, South

could be other states). The book is just over 450 pages, so the file is
fairly large but it is packed with a lot of information. I hope this
will help someone out!

To cris:
Per a typed manuscript, a copy of which is in my possession, entitled
"Some of the Descendants of Robert Coleman of Gloucester, County, Virginia"
author unknown to me, and the original, I believe I obtained from the
public library in downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee, the compiler declares
his/her belief that Robert Coleman immigrated in 1638 and settled in
Gloucester County near Mobjack Bay by 1658.
To razor7:
Jennie I Coleman's diary says one line of Coleman's came from Wales.
I have a booklet on the Scottish Clans which claims Coleman, meaning
"dove" was a branch off the clan "Buchanan". Other lines came from
England (Sir James Coleman of Broxton Mango, Essex County,
England father of John Coleman, from England, who settled in Fairfax
County, VA, 1640. p. 528, The Compendium of American Genealogy.)
The English Coleman brothers were into shipping and ran
routes from Britain to Australia and the U.S. (not necessarily in that order).

My Coleman line apparently entered Virginia in Essex County some time around
1654. His name was Robert Coleman. There was another Robert Coleman in Essex
County about 20 years earlier, if my memory serves me well. It's possible
this was my Robert's father who might have come over first. I have
established no connection yet, other than my supposition. My Robert later
moved to Mobjack Bay. His wife was Elizabeth and supposedly had the last
name of Grizzell (or something close to that -- sorry, my stuff isn't in
front of me). They had at least 6 children, 3 of which were born in Essex
County, England, in Little Horkesley. That's the only record of them in that
county....may have come from somewhere else.
Not much help here, but I have more detailed info around here . . . .
somewhere. I've not found them since I've moved Feb. 28 last.

I would like to invite everyone to stop by my new web
page to take a look at the John B. Power Shop ledger.
This ledger has customer names and dates of
transactions from 1847-1858.
I have been transcribing all the names and dates from
the ledger so that you might see if your relatives lived in
Laurens Co., SC or surrounding areas between 1847-1858.
The surname of COLEMAN and many others are listed.
John B. Power moved his family from Laurens Co., SC in
the fall of 1858 and continued his business in Pike Co., AR.
We are currently transcribing the names of his customers
in AR and hope to add those names to the web page in
the near future. At a later date I will also be including all
the surnames that I'm currently researching.
So, stop by my web page for a visit and see if your relatives
traded with Powers Shop in SC between 1847-1858.

Subject: DAVID ROE COLEMAN
Does anyone have a line of David Roe Coleman from SC, Chester or Fairfield
area?
Do you mean his parents? If so, yes.
Received today via U.S. Mail.
The Robert Coleman Family From Virginia to Texas 1652-1965
by J. P. Coleman, 51st governor of Mississippi, privately published
in 1965 by James P. Coleman, Ackerman, Mississippi, pp. 34-37,
provides the following excerpts from Jennie I. Coleman's diary.
The diary entry is headed "Feasterville, S. C." and is dated
Dec. 3d, 1905. I provide only the most relevant portions below:
Robert Coleman (b ca 1745) married Elizabeth Roe (b 1747)
they had:
1. David Roe, May 19, 1765, Halifax County, NC
2. John Roe, April 2, 1768, Halifax County, NC
3. Robert Roe, Feb. 1, 1769, Halifax County, NC
4. Wiley Roe, Oct. 27, 1771, Halifax County, NC
5. Allen Roe, Nov. 7, 1773, Halifax County, NC
6. Griffen Roe, May 20, 1775, Fairfield County, SC
7. William Roe, Mar. 6, 1776, Fairfield County, SC
8. Sarah Roe, Nov. 8, 1778, Fairfield County, SC
9. Elizabeth Roe, Sep. 8, 1780, Fairfield County, SC
10. Solomon Roe, Oct. 29, 1783, Fairfield County, SC
11. Francis Roe, July 12, 1786, Fairfield County, SC
12. Zerebable Roe, Nov. 28, 1789, Fairfield County, SC
13. Henry Jonathan Roe, June 22, 1793, Fairfield County, SC
14. Ancil Roe, April 22, 1796, Fairfield County, SC
It then goes on to say:
"Of this large family, three died as infants. John, Griffen, William,
Francis, and the two sisters went West, first to Greene County,
Alabama. I know nothing at all about their descendants, except
that they went on to Mississippi and Texas. David, Robert, Wiley,
Allen, Solomon, and Henry Jonathan lived and died near by, all
marrying and rearing rather large families.
"Robert Coleman and his wife, Elizabeth, are buried very near
where they lived, at what is known as the "Coleman" graveyard.
Their small children were the first to be buried there. (lie at the
foot of parents graves). The first house they built, as ..."
The next paragraph then states:
"Nine years ago we put up a small monument to mark the
graves of these two pioneer ancestors, Robert Coleman and
Elizabeth Roe. 'Twas paid for by small contributions from
many of their descendants to the 7th generation, and from 14
states. I am exceedingly glad that tis done, for I think they
deserve to be so remembered. Only one (David Roe) of their
grown sons buried with them, the others who died in this state
are buried in family burying grounds near their homes, except
Henry Jonathan, who is buried in the Feaster Cemetery by his
wife, Polly Feaster."

Does anyone have any thing on Charity Coleman married to Stephen Crosby?
Yes, this just in today:
In the book:
The Robert Coleman Family From Virginia to Texas 1652-1965, by
J. P. Coleman, 51st governor of Mississippi, privately published in 1965
by James P. Coleman, Ackerman, Mississippi; page 68 states:
"From that excellent Coleman historian, Mrs. Etta Rosson, I first learned
that Charity Coleman, daughter of Thomas Coleman, married Stephen
Crosby. He was born November 10, 1782 and died March 20, 1856.
She was born January 22, 1772 and died July 29, 1855. They were
married in 1801
This book, with excerpts from the diary of Jennie I. Coleman documents
this Coleman family came from Wales to Virginia to North Carolina
(Halifax County) and then, in 1775, to Fairfield County, South Carolina.
Robert Coalman received land from Lt. Col. Walter Chiles on Nov. 5,
1652, 813 acres on the south side of the Appomatox River, in Charles
City County, now Prince George. This Robert Sr. had a son, Robert Jr.
who on May 20, 1663 was recorded as Robert Colman, Jr receiving
land from his father, Robert Colman, Sr. which was part of the same
tract south of the river. It is known that the Sr. died in 1688 from court
records showing that his son, John "the orphan of Robert Coleman,
chose his brother, Robert Coleman, to be his guardian."
Exact tie-in to the Halifax County, NC Colemans may not be known
as Civil War destruction of some records obscures the connections.
But, it is known that there was a Robert Coleman, Sr. of Halifax County
who died in late 1795 and had a son Robert Coleman and another
son, Thomas Coleman. Thomas is the father of Charity.

I don't subscribe to the list, but since I have a copy of this census,
