Happy New Eve Everyone,
I am still looking for any information on the family/ies of David ADAMS
and
Lucy COLEMAN, in Warren County, Illinois, before 1853 until after 1859.
I believe they moved to Iowa before the late 1870's.
Any clues would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Anyone know in which family line John Coleman listed in the following
citation belongs?
(From Army MOH files)
MEDAL OF HONOR
COLEMAN, John
Private, U.S. Marine Corps
G.O. Navy Department, No. 169
February 8, 1872
CITATION:
On board the U. S. S. COLORADO in action at Korea on 11 June 1871.
Fighting hand-to-hand with the enemy, COLEMAN succeeded in saving the
life of Alexander McKenzie.

Happy New ear Everyone
Can anyone or more of you help me straighten out the Coleman's who were in
Jasper and Putnam Counties, GA in the early 1800's. I have three DAR
applications filed under Benjamin Andrew Coleman, which say he died in
Jasper Co., GA on 17 May 1813. One of the application lists sons Francis
Isaih, Benjamin Stephen and Abner and daughters Julia and nancy and says
there were other daughters, names unknown. I can find no records in Jasper
Co of Benjamin Andrew's death or any estate records. Can anyone help.
Several of Francis Coleman (who died Washington Co., Al 1823) were in
Jasper and Putnam, as well as Jones Counties. One son, Isaac, was there
until 1819, when his daughter Polly married John Williams. Another
daughter, Martha, married Rigdon Norris in 1815.
My Churchwell Walker married Anne C. Coleman in Jasper County in 1815, and
I thought for some time her father was Isaac Coleman but his estate records
dissprove that thought.
There were other Coleman's who moved through these counties including Jesse
Coleman and some of his family members who came from the Greene Co., GA area.
I would appreciate any information anyone can provide on any of these folks
as I have come to a process of elimination that is necessary to allow me to
focus on the best possibilies.
Thanks in advance
David Walker

Hi Cheryl,
After the Civil War, a large number of Coleman's moved west.
The Southwest Virginia, Eastern Kentucky, and Southern West Virginia region was
an area filled with lawlessness and feuding. Most of the Coleman's being
Unionists, there was much animosity from their Confederate neighbors. The
roster of the 39th Kentucky Mounted Infantry (Union) has a large number of
Columns from Pike and surrounding counties including my ggggrandfather Daniel
and his brothers. According to family stories, much of my family moved to what
became Coleman, Texas in the mid 1860's. They then began returning to Kentucky
a few years later. Most returned after 1868, I only found 3 Coleman voters on
Peter Creek in the election held that year, Daniel B., Doctor L., and
Elexious. By the 1870 census most are back in Pike or Buchanan Counties.
Another explanation is that during the war, alot of Confederate prisoners were
given the choice of prison or joining the Union army to be sent west to fight
indians. Many people from this region picked the Union army. Being mustered out
after the war, it's probable some elected to stay in the west for awhile.
Most CW history books about this area mention the mass moving after the war.
Steve
HI All,
I am still hunting up Sylvester Coleman, and Harvey Coleman. I have found
the two next door to each other in Clay Co, WV in 1880. But was having a
great deal of difficulty finding them prior to that. I even looked at every
census for WV and VA for 1860 and 1870!
Just tonight I found the two of them in the 1870 census index for Collins
Co, Texas. Yes, Texas! They were both born in VA and then found in WV, so
I have no idea why they would be in Texas in 1870.
Anyone have the actual census pages for Collin Co 1870? Or any other
references for that area? Sylvester was a doctor and Harvey a farmer.
Aloha, Cheryl

My Coleman line is VA>(NC?>)Fairfield Co., SC>Hamilton Co. TN
and involves
Charles Coleman, Sr., born 1762 in VA died 1842 SC
his son:
Charles S. Coleman born 1793 in Fairfield Co.? SC
and died Jan. 1860 in Hamilton Co. TN.
I have a book by Cy Yarborough giving lots of history on this
man and the family he started in North Hamilton County, Tenn.
The Coleman portion of the book index is on my web site.
I have a note from Regina Roper regarding a Moses Coleman
that ties in to a father/son combination of two Charles
Colemans. Regina's info is quoted below:
"I was recently sent some info (3 xeroxed sheets) about a
Robert Coleman who came in 1638 to Norfolk VA as an
indentured servant to Thomas Symons. The person who sent
the sheets did not bother to include the name of the book,
author or any other specifics, and there are not very
many sources quoted. I am ASSUMING thast the children he
lists for each generation come from WILLS and DEEDS. He
has this: Robert COleman innigrant wife unk. after serving
indenture settled in Nansemond Co VA one known child:
Robert II died Nansemond bet 1734/9;
had children Robert, Charles, Stephen, William, Moses
and Theophilus.
"Here he goes with Moses only as it is his line (and mine)
This Charles could possibly be an ancestor of yours.
He does have that Chas wife was Rachel and he had at
least 2 sons, Jonathan and Chas. Do you think this is
your kin?" -- Regina Roper
Any information on this family of two Charles is my prime
objective. I am providing Coleman data from 1600s to
1800s from Virginia, N/S Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee,
Alabama, and Arkansas on my web site at:
http://ro.com/~coleman/genealogy.htm
From the web site, you can download books, review Census
Index listings, and one book Index for people of the Coleman
surname! So, check it out! I am adding to it all the time.
Sign the guest book if you want other Coleman researchers
to see you there.

Our technical support at RootsWeb have completed some terrific new
functions for the surname lists hosted there. Thanks to Brian
Leverich, Karen Isaacson, and Marc Nozell for their hard work.
1) Since December 1, all notes are now available on linked web
pages. This provides the capability of viewing "archived" notes
without having to retrieve them directly from the archives. The
URL for the COLEMAN surname list is
http://lists.rootsweb.com/~archiver/COLEMAN-L/
These web pages are automatically updated every 3 hours, so they
should be extremely current.
2) All archives of the COLEMAN list -- from its origin on the
Maiser server to todays RootsWeb server -- can now be searched.
The search engine is pretty robust and fast, too. To use the
search function, point your web browser to
http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl
You'll need to put in the name of the list (COLEMAN-L or COLEMAN)
before you are presented with the search page itself. Try it out!
The search database will be updated weekly, so the most recent
notes will not be found right away. You can always go back to the
threaded archive list (see #1 above) to view the current notes.
---------------------------------------
We also have a web site for the COLEMAN surname list with
instructions on how to subscribe and unsubscribe, pointers to the
archives, and a pointer to the search engine. You can access these
pages with your web browser at

Has anyone come acros this Sally (or possibly Sarah) Coleman?
What I have found:
She married Lincoln Stetson in 1769, in or near Scituate. He was born 27 July 1733, probably in Scituate or a nearby town, and died around 1785, in Salem.
In the Stetson genealogy, she is described as "of Scituate", but I haven't found a record of her yet.
Sally and Lincoln had five children:
1. Sarah b. abt 1770, m. 1791 Jonathan Josselyn
2. James, b. 1771, d. 1796
3. Lincoln, b. 1774,d. 1861, m. 1810 Nancy Batchelder
4. William, b. 1777, d. 1847, m. 1800 Mary Ropes of Salem
5. Jacob
The LDS records (the Ancestral File) has Sally b. 14 July 1744, which is a reasonable date, but no parents are listed, and I would definitely want further confirmation, given the source.
Thanks,
BJ Hinshaw

I am looking for info on Judith Coleman. She married my 5th ggfather,
Abaraham Baugh (b. ~1717 Henrico Co., Va. - d. 1797 Powhatan Co., Va.)

There is information included in Cherokee claims made by ancestors 3
generations later that could indicate she was full blood but that is
certainly not yet known.

Hello All,
I have a book called "In Their Footprints". It's about Emory, Texas
Community and those buried in Clifton Cemetery (my family cemetery). In
searching for my John Coleman I found another Coleman entry in this book
that I have serious doubts about and really confuses everything! Here's
what it says:
"Stephen Lafette Coleman was born in 1838 in Oregon. He married Polly
Francis Andrews. She was born August 29, 1871, place unknown. Polly
died December 11, 1932 from pneumonia, while pulling cotton in Lone Wolf,
Oklahoma. She is buried there. Steven died in 1915 and is buried at
Clifton Cemetery. Steven and Polly had five children Mary, Frank, Bethy,
and Robert, Bob as he was called."
It goes on to talk about his son Robert who married Cora Hines.
Okay, now there's another entry in this book that talks about my
great-great grandmother's family. Here's what it says:
"The mother was Lee Etta Shumate. She was born on Feb. 6, 1892 and died
on Dec. 27, 1930. The father was William Frank Coleman. He was born in
1873 and died on November 17, 1915. They were married on July 3, 1909
and had three children: Cecil Coleman, Olen D. Coleman Sr. and Myrtle
Coleman.
William's father was John Coleman. His stepmother was Sopha Coleman.
His two sisters were Emma and Annie Coleman. His three half sisters were
Bethy Coleman Hines, Mary Coleman Duncan and Pearl Coleman Shumate. His
half brother was Robert Coleman."
Okay, here's my questions - Please help - this is so confusing. I've
looked and looked at it so many times I need help. Is the William Frank
Coleman listed in the story about my great-grandmother the same Frank
Coleman listed as Stephen Lafette Coleman's son? If so, why does it say
that William's father was John Coleman and stepmother Sopha Coleman?
Four of the brothers and sisters names match exactly to Stephen Lafette
Coleman's children. The other big question I have is this: It says that
Stephen Lafette Coleman was born in Oregon in 1838. Were there people
living in Oregon in 1838?
Many thanks in advance to ANY suggestions about this family.

Thanks for your inquiry. I just got back from a 22-day trip that took me
over 6800 miles in my car. Whew!
Since moving here, I have not been able to find all my information, although
I have started putting some stuff on my Web page about Colemans that are
involved in the Chiles family, although it isn't yet there.
I have been putting some family trees as they were entered into the Mountain
Branch Vet in the early 1930s. So far I have Davis and Related Families.
There is more to come.
