"I am not strong enough to fall away while
God is resolved to hold me" - Unknown

Remembering Vivian Westmoreland's earlier find of a marriage between a
James Coleman and Polly Elder (Elbert County Georgia Marriage listings,
1805-1913, James Coleman married to Polly Elder, 3/31/1824
Book L16, p. 487), I starting a county by county census search to see
what could be found. Here is something of interest:
1820 Elbert County, GA Federal Census
John Coleman, Keekers Township, Elbert County. He has a very large
household consisting of :
2 males under 10 years of age;
1 male age 18-26; (this *could* be our James)
1 male age 26-45;
2 females under 10 years of age;
3 females 16-18 years of age;
1 female 18-26 years of age;
and 9 slaves.
In addition:
1820 US Census for Elbert Co., GA
Edward Elder, Christian Twp
1 male of ten and under sixteen
1 male of sixteen and under twenty-six
1 male of forty-five and upwards
2 females of ten and under sixteen
1 female of forty-five and upwards
So, this probably identifies the couple mentioned in the marriage record
of 1824. Also note that, regarding the Coleman family, that the head of
the household is John Coleman, and remember that it was most common in
those days for a man (James?) to name is firstborn son (John) after his
father, NOT after himself.
Again, this is not conclusive, but it *could* be our James Coleman, and
might just turn out to be, after some further digging.
Till next time,
