Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Thanks Pam, we look forward to it.
For those who don't know, Jerry (Jeremiah) Coleman was a first cousin
and contemporary of brothers John M. C. and James McIntosh Coleman. We
don't yet know the name of Jerry's father, but we believe Jerry's father
was brother to James Coleman. This is yet another piece of the puzzle
that I truly believe we will uncover at some point.

Hi everyone,
I am getting the messages. Sorry I haven't responded earlier. My life
is so hectic right now. I am a descendant of Jerry Coleman. I have
more on his descendants, and I will try to post a summary soon. I'm
very busy with working on my school work, but I do want to keep in
touch, and once I finish school, I'd like to do more research.

We are researching Coleman's in AL. We have just uncovered a Jessee Coleman,
born 1784 in VA. He evidently moved to SC, then on to AL. Is he in your
records by chance? Wife was Elizabeth Faith (sometimes spelled Fathy) Jordan, born
SC. They married in SC, had a couple of kids and went to AL.

Hello Elnora. Welcome to the list!
No, I don't have him in my database, but that is not to say he is not in
our woodstack at this point. Some questions I would pose to you are:
what county in Virginia was he born in? Where in South Carolina did he
live? What were the names of his children? What were the names of his
siblings?
Also, be sure that you have checked out the two following web sites:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~nansemondcolemans/atoc.htmhttp://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mobjackbaycolemans/index.html
Wes Coleman is associated with both of these sites. One is regarding
the Coleman family rooted in Nansemond County, Virginia, and the other
is regarding the Coleman family rooted in Mobjack Bay, Virginia. I have
not quite figured out yet whether these two are connected Coleman
families (they might be), but since they are Virginia families, you
might find a link there. The Mobjack Bay page is very large, but does
have a useful index. I keep these sites handy as our Coleman family
might one day find that we are connected to them, and then again, we may
not be. Anyway, keep looking at us also, you never know if you might
find a link to us.
In short, regarding the Coleman family that THIS list was built upon,
it's earliest known ancestor TO DATE is James Coleman, who was born in
Georgia about 1800, county unknown. We are still, as you must have seen
from the earlier messages, still trying to figure out more from there.
Anything you have that might be beneficial or interesting, feel free to
share, and ask for help and we will do our best to do what we can.

Just had to say that I am here. Welcome to all who will join us.
Wow! Daryl, you give us a lot to look forward to, and a lot to read.

One last thing for today, I suppose. I was thinking about this
principle of moving from what you DO know to what what you WANT to find
out. As far I know, we have census information back to 1840 on James
Coleman, but nothing before that, so that's the next thing I am going to
try to track down, because he must have appeared with at least 2
children somewhere, in some county, in 1830. If any of you have it or
want to help look, thanks for the help.
Till next time,

This link is to an incredibly huge web site related to the Colemans of
Mobjack Bay, Virginia. It is well documented, but absolutely immense.
You CANNOT read it all, but there is a reasonable index that I have been
attempting to use with some success. Some of their people did migrate
down to Georgia, and to the very eastern parts of Georgia of interest to
us during the time period of interest to us. I will give you the link,
and if you are interested, have a look and see if you find anything of
interest. Wes Coleman and Sherri Nicole have been working on this site
for YEARS, so this has tons of information in it.

Just an interesting sidebar. Wes Coleman, who is well-known for his
HUGE work on the Coleman family of Nansemond County, Virginia (a family
that we *may* end up being related to, but so far have found no link to)
has worked up this little page that you may find of interest. Here is
the hyperlink.

You know that little metaphore about searching for a needle in a
haystack? Well, while most of the needles are still missing, I am able
to start listing the haystacks, for those who are interested. Here is
one which, while it most likely does not have the missing link, may have
something interesting. NOTE, unless you have lots of time and like
endless reading, you will not want to "read" the entire thing. Instead,
use the search capability in your software to look for key words, as
that will save you some time. I don't know about you, but with two
small children and a full-time job, I don't have the time these days to
read all this stuff. I wish I did, because I love reading, but I just
don't have the time.
Anyway, this first "haystack" is titled "The Coleman Family" by the
American Genealogical Research Institute, Washington, D.C. This book is
no longer in print and the Institute could not be located. Therefore,
the text of the book is available here adapted from photocopies of the
original located in the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.

Well, to help get things started off for this list (I'm tired of
waiting), I figured we would lay out what we have and then present what
we are looking for. Now, I've only been doing this for about 6 years or
so, which makes me pretty much a novice. Some of you are like me, and I
KNOW some of you have been at this much longer, so be sure to jump in
and correct me if I misstate anything, OK? Also, let me state right off
the bat that a good deal of what I have is due to the work previously
done by some of you, long before I began doing this myself. I take NO
credit for most of it. What I am doing is jumping into the work,
grabbing a shovel and joining a work which was already in progress prior
to my arrival. I hope my efforts are helpful.
According to what I have in my database, the earliest known appearance
of our James Coleman and his family is in the 1840 US Census for Henry
County, Georgia.
Coleman, James
Male: 5/10, 1; 10/15, 1; 40/50, 1
Female: Under 5, 1; 5/10, 1; 15/20, 1
As I understand this, it says that in his household, for this census,
there was one male between 5 and 10 years of age (that would be son
James McIntosh son), one male between 10 and 15 years of age (that would
be son John M.C. Coleman), and one male between 40 and 50 years of age
(father James himself). Also enumerated are one female under the age of
5 (that would be the daughter we only know as M. R. or M. K. Coleman),
one female between 5 and 10 years of age (not sure who this is), and one
female between 15 and 20 (this should be the oldest child, daughter
Sarah Coleman, who was born, according to what I have, in 1825). For
some odd reason, and unless I recorded the census information wrong,
they did not record James' wife here. Any ideas?
Next we come to the 1850 US Census for Henry County, Georgia (remember,
Spalding County did not exist until 1851)
In the index for the 1850 Henry County Census, page 221, family 470, we
find the following:
James Coleman, 49 years old, head of household
M. A. Coleman, 40 years old, wife of the head of household
S. A. Coleman, 25 years old, female
J. M. M. Coleman, 21 years old, male (we think this is a typo and should
have been J. M. C. instead of J. M. M.)
J. M. Coleman, 18 years old, male
M. K. Coleman, 15 years old, female
Note, in the 1850 Census, the state of birth for every one of these
individuals, including both parents, is listed as Georgia. Regarding,
James and his wife, I make the assumption (please tell me if this is
unwarranted) that they must have been born somewhere in the eastern part
of the state, as the area comprised by Henry County was still indian
(either Cherokee or Creek, not sure) territory during the period of
1800-1810, making it somewhat or highly unlikely that they would have
been born there. IF this is true, then this would lead me to look for
James Coleman's (and his brother's and father's) origins somewhere east
towards the counties of Elbert, Madison, Jackson, Greene, Wilkes,
Richmond, and maybe a few others.
Well, that's what I have for starters. I have some more but will save
for another message. Hopefully, this will get you to start thinking
about what we are trying to figure out here.
1. Where did James Coleman come from?
2. Who were James Coleman's parents, and who were his siblings?
3. Where might we find other Coleman settlers in the eastern parts
of Georgia, early 1800's who might fit in with this family?
Happy Hunting!

Recently, we've had a couple of new additions to the list whom I know,
plus one or two whom I don't know, yet. So, I thought I would send this
for the benefit of all.
How to post a message to the list.
To post to both COLEMAN-JAMES-L and COLEMAN-JAMES-D, messages should be
sent to
COLEMAN-JAMES-L(a)rootsweb.com
Messages sent there will appear both places.
If you want to see messages that were posted prior to your subbing to
the list (there were only a very few, 3 or 4, go here
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/c/coleman.html
Then go to the second part of the page (COLEMAN-JAMES-L) and look for
BROWSE THE COLEMAN-JAMES archives.
Looking forward to hearing from all of you, on the list. When everyone
checks in (hopefully after checking the archive), I have some possibly
relevant information to post that might be of interest to everyone. I
know Vivian does also. The reason I suggest checking the archive is
because I had suggested that everyone introduce themselves to the list,
and so far, Helen Owens and I are the only ones to have done so. You
will see that in the archive.
Regards,
