------
Stephen L. Colgrove, a prisoner in the
House of Corrections at Springfield,
Massachusetts, made a determined effort
to free himself from bondage last Wed-
nesday, by swallowing over three ounces
of tineture of opium, which the keeper
gave him to cure a pretended toothache.
He made a dash for the hospital,
intending, it is supposed, to lock him-
self in a room there, the key to which,
as hall-mane he had in his pocket, and
when seized by half a dozen, he made a
furious fight, growing wild at the sight
of the stomach pump which the county
physician produced and demanding leave
to die in peace. He was finally over
come and relieved of the poison; but he
asserts that he will yet succeed in
killing himself. Cases of this kind are
difficult to deal with. If he had
attempted the life of a second person,
there would be some remedy; but it is
hardly feasible for a court to bind a man
over to key the peace--with himself.

Mrs. Marietta Colegrove
Mrs. Marietta Colegrove, widow of the
late Francis F. Colegrove and practically
a life long resident at her apartments in
the Wellington hotel, after an illness of
only about two week. Mrs. Colegrove's
health had been very robust until within
a few days and her death was entirely
unexpected. Old age contributed to
hasten her death.
Born in Eastern New York, Mrs. Colegrove
came to this city while still in her early
life. She was a resident here for many
years and became exceedingly well known
throughout the city. A few years ago she
left here and made her home in Burlington,
Vt., returning in the early spring, to
take up apartments in the Wellington,
where she passed away today.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs.
Ofary C. Temple of this city and by one
granddaughter, Mrs. Pauline Douglas. The
funeral arrangements have not yet been
completed.
