Former fire chief
was a perfectionist
NELSON - Morgan Colegrove liked
to do things right.
"When he was the fire chief of
the Nelson Fire Department, he
could prime it and pump it
blindfolded," said Mr. Colegrove's
son, Morgan Colegrove III of
Woodhull, N.Y.
Morgan F. Colegrove Jr., of Nelson
RD 2, died Wednesday, April 13, 1994,
at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial
Hospital, Wellsboro, after an
extended illness. He was 74.
Mr. Colegrove was born in Knoxville
and lived in the area his entire life,
except for his time serving in the
Pacific for the U.S. Army during
World War II.
Mr. Colegrove helped organize the
Nelson Fire Department in 1959,
served as chief for two years and
retired in the early 1970's. He also
worked for Ingersoll-Rand in Painted
Post for more then 40 years.
The fire department was important
to him, but other things in his life
took priority.
"He put family First," Morgan Cole-
grove III said. "His family was always
No. 1."
Horses were another interest of Mr.
Colegrove. Horse shows and rodeos
were always on the family lost of
placed to go on weekends. He ended
up working at one show every week,
volunteering his time to help out the
show.
He also lent a hand to people in the
neighborhood. An elderly couple next
door often told Mr. Colegrove they
were in his debt for the odd jobs he
did for them, Morgan Colegrove III
said.
"He never expected to get paid by
any organization or a person if they
needed help," said another of Mr.
Colegrove's sons, Dennis Colegrove of
Elkland.
Reading was another hobby. Mr.
Colegrove read anything and everything
he could, and no subject was taboo,
his sons said.
"He wanted to learn as much as he
could," Morgan Colegrove III said.
"If you asked him something and he
didn't know, he would come back to
you in a day or two with the answer."
The sons followed their father's
footsteps into the Nelson Fire
Department and both have served as
Chief. They also read a great deal
and are involved in teaching in one
way or another. They said their dad
had an impact on their lives that
will never fade.
"We're damn sure going to miss
him," both sons agreed.
He is survived buy his wife, of
45 years, Ruth; sons and daughters-
in-law, Morgan III and Helen Cole-
grove of Woodhull, N.Y. and Dennis
and Janene Colegrove of Elkland;
two grand children; sister
Christine Wakely of Tioga, Pa.;
brother and sister-in-law, Henry
and Marjorie Colegrove of Nelson;
several nieces, nephews and cousins.
