The Colegrove legacy
In many ways, Bill Colegrove was a
renaissance man of Lake Jackson and
for Brazoria County.
Versatile both in his profession
and his interests, William Dana
Colegrove wil be remembered the most,
however, for the may and diverse ways
he helped his fellow man.
Colegrove Dies Sept. 21 at the age
of 88 in Fort Worth after a long ill-
ness. To the end, he showed his zest
for life by traveling, and in his
final months, even took up oil painting.
He showed unbound promise at an
early age, then never failed to meet or
surpass those expectations. Colegrove
was the valedictorian of his high school
class at age 15. By the age of 25, he
was named assistant to A.P. Beutel,
assistant general manager of Dow Chemical
Co., Midland, Mich.
Colegrove accompanied Beuter in his
search for a Gulf Coast location for
Dow, and the rest is history of the best
kind.
He and wife, Sena, were among the first
to settle in the new community of Lake
Jackson in 1943. Serving in a wide
variety of posts with Dow's Freeport
plant over the years, he became Lake
Jackson's third mayor.
The list of organizations and
activities Colegrove became involved
with during his residence here is too
long to recount in full.
He organized the area Junior Achievement
Program, served as chairman of Brazoria
County Red Cross, was Brazoria County Fair
chairman-- and in his 80s was still and
active volunteer for LVA-READ, teaching
English as a second language and teaching
English-speaking adults to read:
For a time after "retirement" from Dow,
when he became director for an Angleton
bank, he even dabbled as a columnist and
restaurant reviewer for The Facts.
Beloved by the community, the United Way
award for volunteerism named after Colegrove
is perhaps the most prestigious honor
annually bestowed in Brazoria County.
At 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct 21, a memorial
service and celebration of his full life
will be held at First United Methodist
Church of Lake Jackson.
Attending that service would be a wonderful
way to honor this special man who touched so
many and did so much in his 88 years. But
you have a feeling that Bill Colegrove would
be the most moved to know that his example
of volunteerism and service continues to
inspire others to do the same after his
passing.
