Operations of a Bigamist.
About three months since a young man
of prepossessing appearance and affable
manner, came to this village and engaged
to work for the Swab Bros, as a painter.
He engaged board at Daniel Mickle's for
a time. In a few weeks after his appear-
ance among us he was absent a few days
and returned with a wife No. 3. Smith
was the first cognomen he bore and gave
at Mr. M.'s; but when on his return at
the time spoken of he was greeted by
fellow boarders as Mr. Smith, his wife
caught the accents and corrected the
title by informing them that her husband's
name was Colgrove. Here began the
first drop in the bucket of his wrath and
the exposition of himself as a bigamist.
To a friend he confidentially gave a short
history of his life. When in his teens his
father died, leaving him a few thousand
dollars. He married a miss of^like age,
and after a short married life procured
a divorce through one of the New York
patent divorce lawyers. He married
again, and through a similar course freed
himself from wife No. 2 to cleave unto
wife No. 3—Mrs Colgrove. In a week or
two after the appearance of the latter
wife at his boarding place they were absent
a few days ; but before leaving he
informed Mrs. M. that his trunk and
contents would secure her for a small
board bill. He returned, however in a
few days, but alone. One evening, about
9 o'clock, he went out to mail a letter,
and has not since been seen. The trunks
and contents were left behind to compensate
for his board. Sheriff Crosby, of
Pittsfield, was here a few days after to
arrest him on a charge of bigamy. When
he first appeared among us he endeavored
by his winsome ways, to captivate another
bird from among our fair sex, and occupied
the uppermost seat in the synagogue. -- Chat.

Colgrove.
G. B. Colgrove, the bigamist, who resi-
ded for a short time in this village, has
been "trapped." It appears, after leav
ing this place, he went back to Chester
(his former residence.) The policemen
were close on his track, and the Thursday
following his departure from Chatham he
was marched to Springfield, and arraigned
before the police court of that city, and,
failing to furnish bonds, h e was held for
trial His case being again taken up on
Thursday of last week, he was required
to furnish $1,000 bonds, to appear at the
May term of the Superior Court, for bigamy.
Failing to obtain the required
amount he was committed in default.—

ROBBED BY TRAINMEN
-------
The Boston and Albany Unearths a
Wide Spread Conspiracy.
-----
The Boston and Albany Railroad Company
has unearthed a wholesale plot to rob the
road by trainmen. George H. Colgrove,
conductor, and Albert Gordon, brakeman,
have been arrested, charged with larceny.
Other arrests are expected to follow at
once. The method employed by the conspir-
ators was an entirely new one. Instead of
breaking the seals on the doors they re-
moved the screws from the cleat which
holds the door to the car, and then,
pulling the entire framework away for a
foot or fifteen inches, one man would
squeeze himself into the aperture and hand
out what articles he could get hold of.
This done, the screws would be replaced
and the cleats brought back into place.
Employes all along the road are said to
be involved.

NORTH COHOCTON
Mr. and Mrs. Harlo Colgrove of
Canadice, who were married Saturday
evening, Oct. 8. by Rev. O. A. Retan
at the residence of O. F. Beals, were
the happy recipients of a serenade
last Monday evening, given in their
honor at the above named home by
several of our enterprising young
gentlemen. A number of the choicest
selections from Dolly Gray were rendered,
accompanied by tin and wooden
instruments; there being no rest
for the weary until the tin can band
would bring its program to a "finis."
Cigars were distributed, after which
peace reigned, quietness resumed and
people made up for lost slumber.

Jane Colgrove.
------
HUDSON, N.Y., Aug. 30 1895.
Editor Republican:--Upon my arrival in
Hudson this morning from New York, I was
greatly shocked to notice in to-day's
issue of Mrs. John S. Colgrove, of
Claverack, N.Y.
I cannot let this death pass unnoticed,
without expressing in a few words my
highest esteem and regard for one who had
endeared herself to a host of young people
who have made Claverack their home during
the last twenty-five years or more, and
who when they learn that she has departed
this life and is at rest for her labors
and suffering, will mingle their tears
with mine, and sympathize with the husband
left behind to fight the battle of life
alone.
Mrs. Colgrove was a woman, kind, genial
of heart, sympathetic and ready at all
times to aid those who were in distress.
To know her was to love her. Her name
is known all over this country, for there
are living to-day representatives of
every State in this Union who in years
past attended the college at Claverack,
and all can attest to her lovable char-
acter and kindly interest. Her home was
the resort of the boys--yes, and the girls
too-- and many stories could be told of the
good times had beneath her roof.
For several years past she had been a
great sufferer, but oh! so patient. Never
once have I heard her complain, but rather,
she manifested a deep resignation to the
Divine Will. She has gone to her reward.
Her memory will be lasting, I know I voice
the sentiment of all her friends, in this
impartial tribute.
A useful life is ended. Pain and suffering
are over. Friends who are left will grieve,
but to her has come that knowledge of the
unknown world, and that last everything is
plain and clear before her eyes.
To the bereft husband a host of friends
extend their warmest Sympathies in this
addiction.
