KILLED BY THE CARS. — On Friday night,
Mr. S. C. Colgrove and Dr. Nivison, of
Burdett, were summoned to Pittsburg by a
telegram announcing that Mr. Abram C.
Colgrove, father of the former, was lying
in a critical state, the result of
injuries received from a railroad col-
lision which occurred on Thursday, at
Perry Station near that city. These gent-
lemen did not reach their destination
until Sunday afternoon, having been
unfortunate in making connections by
rail. They found the subject of their
search a corpse, his death having occurred
at about three o'clock, that morning.
The deceased was on his way to New
York with two car loads of sheep. While
he was sleeping in the caboose, his train
was overtaken by another and a collision
ensued. The brakeman who stood on the
caboose platform, seeing the danger called
out to Mr. Colgrove and then jumped off,
in time to escape unhurt. Mr. Colgrove
reached the platform just as the engine
struck the caboose. When he was found
his limbs were terribly mutilated and it
was thought he could not long survive,
but, possessed of a strong constitution,
he lingered until Sunday when death
terminated his sufferings.
Mr. Colgrove was for many years a resi-
dent of Hector in this county, and ranked
as one of the, most influential men of
that town. He removed to Ohio a few years
ago, where he resided until the time of
his death. He leaves five children,
three daughters and two sons: Mrs.
Cornelius Cole, wife of ex-Senator Cole,
of California, Mrs. Whiting, also of
California, Mrs. Nivison, wife of Dr.
Nivison of Burdett, Mr. S. C. Colgrove
of Burdett and Mr. Bradley Colgrove, a
resident of Ohio. The age of deceased was
seventy-three years.
The remains reached Watkins on Monday,
and were conveyed to the residence of Dr.
Nivison in Burdett. The funeral services
were held at the house, Tuesday morning
and were very largely attended. The
remains were deposited in the cemetery at
Trumansburg.
