A Serious Charge.
ARTHUR D. COLEGROVE ARRESTED AT ELMIRA
FOR CHEATING AN INSURANCE COMPANY.
The Elmira Gazette of last Friday con-
tained the following account of the
arrest of Arthur D. Colegrove, late of
Knoxville in this county. The
AGITATOR of February 15th contained the
report that a building belonging to Mr.
Fitch and occupied by Mr. Colegrove had
been burned at Knoxville on the preced-
ing Sunday evening while Mr. Colegrove's
family were all away from home. It is
now changed that by means of this fire
Mr. Colegrove attempted to cheat the
company that had insured his goods.
The Gazette says:
Yesterday Chief of Police Little was
notified from Elkland to look out for
three boxes, weighing 500 pounds,
which had been shipped to this city.
The Chief after a short hunt found
that the boxes had been delivered by
the Erie Express Company to a residence
on West Water street, and a portion of
the contents removed and the balance
brought back to the Pattinson House
where Colegrove was registered under
the name of John Smith, of Toledo Ohio.
The boxes contained valuable books
which Colegrove had alleged were burned
up in the fire at Knoxville. When the
chief descended upon him he was engaged
in repacking a portion of the books to
ship South. He weakened immediately
and acknowledged the books were not in
the place burned, but were safe in
Osceola. The Chief took him in custody
and locked him up in jail to await the
arrival of the Pennsylvania parties.
It was a slick scheme which Colegrove
had concocted to best the insurance
company, but he worked it so fine that
he got caught in the net.
The boxes in which the books were
packed were received last night from
the express company by A. C. Wright, of
this city, an acquaintance and former
school friend of Colegrove's. Wright
paid the express fee and had the boxes
sent to his boarding place on West
Water street where he repacked the
goods, selecting out a set of encyclop-
edias and other books and sending the
balance down to Colegrove at the
Pattinson House. Wright claims he
acted innocently although he thought
there was something wrong.
Colegrove this afternoon confessed
the whole scheme and said he had sworn
in his schedule to the insurance comp-
any that the books were burned also
that an organ and some small musical
instruments and clothing belonging
to himself and wife were destroyed,
which were in reality saved.
He will be held in jail until a
requisition can be obtained on the
charge of forgery and he will then be
turned over to Pennsylvania officers.

ALLYN B. COLEGROVE'S
RETURN
________
AFTER ABSENCE OF 13 YEARS IS
TO LOCATE AND TAKE CHARGE
OF PROPERTY..
________
Allyn B. Colegrove.a former resident
of this city, and son of the late A. M,
Colegrove, an.extensive property owner,
controlling the McDonough House
hotel and the a theatre property on Main
street, one of the oldest hotel proper-
ties in the New England states, and
known far and wide through the innumer-
able prominent citizens of the
country who have been entertained
there, and who by the way, has been
making is home in Seattle, Washington,
during his absence, has decided to
assume the management of the'property
of the estate, and with that intention
in view the tenants throughout
the city were notified Thursday to that
effect. During Mr. Colegrove's absence
several changes have occurred
throughout the city and he speaks in
glowing terms of the progress made,
not particularly noticeable to those
residing here permanently, but which
shows up as prominently to the stranger
after, an absence of several years,
as do improvements to non-residents
of other towns. Mr. Colegrove enjoys
a large acquaintance in this his native
town, and his return will be welcomed
by a large circle of old acquaintances.
Of any changes that, may occur to the
many holdings of the Colegrove estate,
it is not necessary to state, but as Mr.
Colegrove is fresh from the land of
hustling, it is safe to presume that a
"move" will be put into existence that
will bo of general interest to the town.
It is not, positive, that Mr. Colegrove
will remove his family here for the
present, but all join in wishing our
former -townsman a royal welcome
When he again pitches his tent in ***-
staid old town of his birth.
