RITES HELD
FOR PIONEER
Funeral services were held today
for George Louis Colegrove, 92, a
resident of Oakland for 35 years
and one of the pioneer stage
coach drivers in California who
died here Tuesday.
Colegrove whose residence was at
3218 Eighth Avenue died at
Merritt Hospital after a brief
illness. Funeral services were
held at the Gothic Chapel of Mt.
View Cemetery.
Born in Illinois in 1843 he
moved to Iowa where he began his
career as a stage driver. In 1863
he braved the perils of a Trans-
continental trip by wagon train
to come to California. Ten years
before the coming of the railroad,
Colegrove was driving a stage
over the treacherous roads of the
Santa Cruz Mountains.
When Senator James G. Fair in-
augurated rail travel through
that section, Colegrove became
an engineer, and remained in the
service of the Southern Pacific
for 38 years. He was the first
conductor on the old narrow gauge
railroad operating between Alameda
Terminal and Oakland, prior to
his retirement in 1915.
On January 6, 1933, Colegrove and
his wife celebrated their sixtieth
wedding anniversary. Mrs. Cole-
grove
died shortly afterwards.
Colegrove was an active member of
the Pioneer California Stagecoach
Drivers, and only last year
traveled to Carpinteria for the
annual reunion. He was the oldest
member present.
Surviving him are three children,
Mrs. H. L. Martin, 636 Hillgirt
Circle; Mrs. George Hildebrand,
2042 Tenth Avenue, and Dr. J.
A. Colegrove, Los Angeles.

HILDEBRAND-COLEGROVE
WEDDING IS EVENT.
The marriage of George Hildebrand
and Miss Colerove took place on
Wednesday evening at the home of
the bride, and nearly a hundred
guests, relatives and close friends,
were present to witness the
ceremony.
The groom is the only son of Mr.
and Mrs. George Hildebrand, who
represent one of our best known
families. They have a wide
circle of friends who have always
met with the most hospitable
entertainment in their large home
on Sixteenth street. Mrs.
Hildebrand is a leading member of
the Ebell club, and with their
son, the Hildebrands have made
extensive trips East and have
spent many months in travel abroad.
They are a delightful family and
their friends are sorry that the
younger members of it are to
estabish their home in the far
northwest.
The Colegrove are also among our
well known families and the bride
is a sweet and very popular girl.
She made an ideal piture in the
loveliest of wedding gowns a
gorgeous hand embroidered chiffon
over satin. The bodice was
elaborately trimmed in rose point
lace and embroidered in pearls.
The maid of honor, Miss Hill,
wore a gown of white crepe, the
skirt trimmed with a broad band
showing a fine Dresden effect.
It was a pink wedding and the
bridesmaids were all gowned alike
in dainty empire robes of pink
marquisette. The details were
all perfectly arranged, and the
wedding was a most happy affair.
Mr. and Mrs. Hildebrand have gone
south on a brief wedding trip,
and on their return they will
spend a few days in Oakland before
leaving for their future home in
the north.
Mr. Hildebrand is engaged in
business in Seattle, and the home
of the young people will be
established there.
After all they are wise. There
are many opportunities in a new
country, and a young man with
pluck and courage will have a
fortune well assured.
