Colegrove Day 5: Defense Starts Case
By WBNG News

Story Updated: Jan 26, 2009 at 7:10 PM EST
32 year old Steven Colegrove of Deposit is seen here leaving Bradford County Court last week.
He's accused of killing parents Joseph, Marlene, and brother Michael Colegrove in their Tuscarora Township home in August 2007.
After a week of testimony and one witness today, the prosecution rested.
"We had about 59 witnesses all together and some very strong circumstantial evidence and some pretty good police work. I'm awfully relieved to have that behind me at this point," says District Attorney Daniel Barrett.
A forensics expert testified for the defense about a bruise found on the right shoulder of Steven Colegrove, just days after his family was killed.
Troopers believe the wound was caused by a firing a shotgun.
The forensics expert could not dispute that theory.
"Even though there's no specific elements of this bruise, regarding size, orientation, or pattern that allow us to say for sure that the shotgun butt did or did not cause the bruise, the fact of the matter is the shotgun is consistent with an object or implement that could cause this bruise," says Dr. Eric Vey, forensic scientist.
Steven told police he hurt his shoulder when he fell on the porch of his
home in Deposit.
Some friends and family members of Marlene Colegrove took the stand this afternoon.
They testified that she was upset about her strained relationship with another son, Robert Colegrove.
Those same witnesses say she almost never mentioned Steven.
In Towanda, Gabe Osterhout, WBNG-TV Action News.
The defense is expected to wrap up its case in the next day or two.
Prosecutors say Steven Colegrove may testify on his behalf.
Defense attorneys would not comment.

Colegrove Murder Trial Day 5

Story Updated: Jan 26, 2009 at 2:13 PM EST
The second week of testimony is underway in the case of a Broome County man, accused of murdering his parents and brother.
Today, the prosecution rested its case.
32 year old Steven Colegrove of Deposit is charged in the shooting deaths of Joseph, Marlene and Michael Colegrove.
All three were found shot to death in their Tuscarora township home in August 2007.
This morning, the Prosecution called witnesses to refute claims that Steven was not involved.
A deposit police officer told the court he was in the police station the night the Colegroves were murdered.
Steven claims he was sitting on his porch in Deposit that night watching the police car drive by several times, and that he couldn't have been at the family's Tuscarora Township home at the time of the murder.
A Pennsylvania state trooper was also called to the stand, where he told the court he saw Heather Colegrove the night of the killings wearing a tank top, and she had not bruising on her shoulder.
Meaning she hadn't fired a shotgun recently.
Heather is the wife of Robert Colegrove, the third Colegrove child.
After that testimony, the district attorney then rested his case.

Triple Murder Trial Enters Week 2

Testimony in the triple murder trial of a Bradford County man will enter week two Monday.
32 year-old Steven Colegrove is accused of killing his parents and another brother in August of 2007 in their Tuscarora Township home.
Prosecutors say he killed his family to benefit from his mother's life insurance policy.
State Police have testified that Steven was was nervous during initial interviews, and told several lies.
Troopers also discovered a bruise on Steven's right shoulder and believed it was caused by firing a shotgun.
The defense has argued another brother, Robert Colegrove, had more motive to kill the family.
During testimony Robert admitted to having a falling out with his family.
The Prosecution is expected to rest its case early this week.

The defense rests its case in the murder trial of Steven Colegrove at the Bradford County Courthouse in Towanda.
Closing arguments will start Wednesday.
32 year old Steven Colegrove is from Deposit, in Broome County.
He's charged in connection with the shooting deaths of his parents and a brother at their home in Tuscarora Township in August, 2007.
Tuesday, one of Colegrove's friends testified about a shooting trip they took in Tioga County.
The man said Steven shot the gun left handed and seemed comfortable.
Other people who know Steven had previously testified he was mainly right handed.
State Police found a bruise on Steven's right shoulder after the murders.
Troopers believe that bruise was caused by the repeated firing of a shotgun.
Other witnesses testified that Marlene Colegrove told them that she was afraid of her another son, Robert.
They say Marlene rarely mentioned Steven.
Prosecutors says Steven Colegrove could testify today.
Defense attorneys would not comment on whether he will take the stand.

Hi, Casandra:
I do not use Family Tree Maker, but I did start putting together a lineage on Ancestry.com. When I get a little further along, I'll make it available to everyone. Also, my cousin, Rodney Johnson, has put together an extensive Colegrove history. I'll get his e-mail for you, if you'd like.

3 Murdered In Bradford County

"It just doesn't make sense. It's just crazy."
That feeling's shared among many that knew the Colegrove family.
Police tape now surrounds the family's home here on Kirk Drive in Tuscarora Township.
Joe, Marlene and their son Michael, were all found dead around 5 Wednesday evening.
The Colegrove's were a fixture in nearby Laceyville.
A makeshift memorial rests in front of the barber shop Joe owned.
"Joe has been in Laceyville all his life. He's the barber and when you cut every body's
hair you know everybody," says Jerry Burke of Auburn.
A wreath also sits outside the Laceyville Fire Department where Joe served as chief for
nearly 20 years.
His wife, Marlene, was a bus driver for the Wyalusing School District.
People say she was also well liked.
"It's just such a small town this is a shock. You don't think of things like this happening
up here and Joe was every body's friend," says Mayr Tyler of Laceyville.
State Police say it was a friend who went to check on the family, and found all 3 shot to
death.
Investigators are searching the area for evidence, and asking anyone with information to
call.
"I'm scared not knowing what happened. Nobody locks their doors around here. So it's
just like make sure the kids are ok and lock the doors and stay inside until we see what
happens," says Cheri Butler of Laceyville.
Some people like Butler say they will lock their doors tonight.
State Police have not said anything about when they think the Colgroves were shot or if
there is a suspect or suspects.
The Bradford County Coroner will conduct the autopsies Friday.
The Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward of up to 2 thousand dollars
for information leading to an arrest in the case.

New Details About 3 People Murdered In Bradford County
By Jessica Light

"It was a disturbing scene."
Pennsylvania State Police say Joseph, Marlene and Michael Colegrove were were shot in
the head or face sometime Wednesday morning.
Their bodies were found in different rooms on the second floor of their home here in
Tuscarora Township.
Troopers would not say if they have a suspect or suspects in mind.
But the way they were killed suggests the Colegrove's were targeted.
"When we learn more about the victims we learn more about the motives and at this
point there's multiple possible motives," says Lt. Frank Hacket of the Crime Section of
Pennsylvania State Police.
State Police say someone shot the Colegroves between midnight and 6am Wednesday at
the home on Kirk road.
A friend who had plans with the family found their bodies later that day.
Police also say they're looking for a pick up truck.
They have no description of the vehicle but say it was seen just down the road, in the
area of a restaurant early that morning.
"If anyone was driving a pickup truck in that area if they could give us a call and we're
also looking for any information about a pickup truck that might have been in the area,"
says Hacket.
Investigators are also looking for information about the family.
Their behaviors, hobbies, friends or history.
"Usually there's a path that crosses between the victim and the subject and that's what
we're trying to get at," says Hacket.
State Police won't say if they found the weapon, a shot gun.
An autopsy of the bodies is underway.
It could provide more scientific evidence to help State Police find a killer.
Pennsylvania State Police are asking that anyone with any information on the truck or
the family's life give them a call.
You can call the crime stoppers tip line at 1-800-4-PA TIPS.

David and Carol Keeffe were also shot and killed in the garage of their home last
November.
The Keeffe's were also a well known couple where they lived, in Athens Township.
David was an attorney.
State Police say the Keeffe and Colegrove shootings are not related and there's no
evidence of a serial killer.
Again, they feel the Colegrove killings are an isolated incident.
As for the Keeffe investigation, State Police say it is on-going.

Motive, Knowledge Lead Police To Son's Arrest In Colegrove Killings

Story Updated: Aug 13, 2007 at 6:14 PM EST
On Saturday State police arrested 31-year-old Steven Colegrove.
He's from Deposit in Broome County.
Colegrove is charged with 3 counts of homicide.
This criminal complaint filed by Pennsylvania State Police explains why they believe he
killed his family.
Investigators believe Joseph, Marlene and Michael Colegrove were ambushed in their
home last Wednesday in Tuscarora Township.
Joseph and Michael were shot while asleep.
Marlene was killed in a hallway.
All 3 were shot in the head quickly and accurately.
Troopers say Steven Colegrove's has that shooting expertise based on his training in the
military.
During questioning, State Police discovered a bruise on his shoulder.
It was the type of bruise typically left from firing a shotgun, the weapon used to kill the
victims.
Investigators also say Steven Colegrove knew his parents home well, making it easier to
get in and out.
But, a woman driving in the area around the time of the murders saw a pick up truck
leaving the property.
Colegrove has a truck that fits her description.
Investigators point to money as possible motive.
His mother purchased a 100-thousand dollar life insurance policy in March of 2006.
Steven Colegrove would be the only child to receive benefits upon the deaths of his
parents and brother.
Colegrove remains in the Bradford County Jail.
A preliminary hearing set for Wednesday was postponed.
The judge is on vacation.

Hundreds of people lined Main Street in Laceyville as fire trucks escorted
Joseph, Marlene and Michael Colegrove to their final resting place.
Joseph and Michael volunteered with the Laceyville fire department for many years.
Firefighters from neighboring counties also brought their trucks for the procession.
"As a fellow firefighter we would come down here in a heartbeat to pay our tributes,"
says Terry Rogers of Dushore Fire Deparment.
Flags were lowered to half staff outside the American Legion here in Black Walnut,
where services were held.
The funeral dry eye was difficult to find.
This couple, who knew the Colegrove family, is still trying to understand what
happened.
"It's just one of those tragedies that happens from time to time. You just can't understand
why," says Beth Dodge of Black Walnut.
The Colegroves were shot and killed in their home in Tuscarora Township last week.
Joseph Colegrove owned this barbershop.
Marlene Colegrove drove a school bus.
People who knew Marlene say she loved the students she drove.
"They'll never be able to replace these people," says Charlie Dodge of Black Walnut.
Friends say this is a fitting service for a family that was an asset to the community.
"Terrible loss...A scar that will probably take a long time to heal," says a friend.
The small community says they will mourn the passing of the Colegroves, but the family
will never be forgotten.
State troopers arrested 31-year old Steven Colegrove for the deaths of his parents and
brother.
He's from Deposit, in Broome County.
He is charged with three counts of homicide and is in the Bradford County Jail.
A court date scheduled for Wednesday was postponed.

Death of Helen Colegrove. Born at Clearfield, Pa., May 27, 1886. Died at Bradford at 2:30 a.m. March 16, 1901. These are the dates that mark the bounds of a beautiful life. Helen H. Colegrove was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Colegrove of No. 8 Sanford street, this city. She was in the first year of the high school course, but was compelled to leave school in December by reason of n attack of typhoid fever, from which she had only partially recovered when she was again stricken with disease which found her weakened frame an easy prey. For some days it has been known that she could not recover. The immediate cause of death was cerebral meningitis resulting from acute millary tuberculosis. Besides her parents she is survived by four brothers, Dana, Albert, Ernest, and Frederick. Helen was a girl of more than ordinary promise. For one so young she had a remarkable decision of character combined with a cheerful disposition, and was a favorite with her schoolmates and aquaintances. She possessed a pure artistic talent, evidences of which in the form of drawings and paintings are preserved in loving remembrance. and had she been permitted to live there is no doubt but a bright career in that line of activity was before her. Much sympathy is expressed by the entire community for the bereaved family, and especially by those intimately interested in the High school, of which the father has been the principal for the last four years. The home, No. 8 Sanford street will be open Monday from 9 to 10 a.m. to allow friends to view the remains, and at the latter hour brief funeral service will be conducted by Rev. C. B. Millspaugh, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church, of which the deceased was a consistent member. The remains will be taken on the 12:10 B. R. & P. train Monday to Clearfield, where the mother's family reside, for burial.
The funeral services for the late Helen Colegrove, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Colegrove, were held this morning at 10 o'clock from the house, No. 8 Sanford street. Rev. C. E. Millspaugh officiating. The hosue was open from 9 o'clock to 10 and the remains viewed by many friends of the deceased. At 12:10 the funeral party left for Clearfield, Pa., where services will be held to-morrow afternoon and the burial will be made. (written notation on clipping; March 18, 1901)
